How many locos and cars do you have
Posted by JeremyB on Monday, January 3, 2005 3:00 PM
Hey guys

I know this has been posted a thousand times before but since there are some new members over the holidays I was wondering how many locos do you have in your collection. For me I only have 12 locos and 112 freight cars. I only have a 4X8 layout too.

Interested to hear your thoughts

Too Many! [;)]

I have 15 to 20 engines in HO, 4 in N. As for freight cars, I have about 15 in N, and about 30 to 45 in HO.

Well, let's just say I've been an active model railroader since Athearn and MDC freight car kits were metal, and there were companies around like Ulrich, Varney and Silver Streak. As to locomotives, I bought my first brass loco in 1960 (still have it). I've got about 35 brass locos, 8 or 9 BLI's, some Rivarossi's, a couple of Genesis, and some older MDC, all steamers, of course. As to freight cars--I've lost count (mostly reefers), but I have enough passenger equipment to run the Shasta Daylight, the Cascade, a made-up Rio Grande streamliner called the Prospector (not the original overnight one), the Royal Gorge and now I'm working on the Exposition Flyer. Let's put it this way, my next project is an 8 track holding yard on the other side of the garage, and that will probably only take care of my reefers! 'Nough said.

1 2-8-2 Mikado (NYC)
1 ALCO S1 switcher (NYC)

9 hoppers (1 covered)
6 box cars
3 tankers
2 gondolas
2 reefers
2 cabeese
1 stock car
1 gondola/flat car
1 25-ton crane

I don't really want a very big roster. More you have; more you have to maintain.

One of the reasons I got this computer was so that I would have a means ready to hand to be able to answer this kind of question. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to enter my engines into the file but off the top of my head I would guess about 2 or 3 dozen ranging from combination eng/baggage cars on my Pioneer and 1935 Twin Zephyrs through 4 unit frt diesels and a Big Boy . One of these days I'll get them listed. Soon. Really.
The cars I;ve got listed (all neatly by prototype for psgr and by car type for frt.) I have 204 psgr cars, about 60/40 plastic/brass, mostly assembled into specific trains. Given the exhorbitant price brass now goes for and the superb quality of Branchline's Pullmans and Walthers' light wieghts I suspect all future psgr aquisitions will be plastic. I have 515 frt cars including cabooses. These numbers are for cars actually built and on the RR. I've got a bunch of kits in both psgr and frt that I'll adding to the RR. Soon. Really.
You probably wonder where I put them all. My RR is almost all terminal/yard operation on two levels (psgr on top frt on the lower) and operation is out and back. My lower level frt "main line" is a 38' loop with a couple of staging tracks running off of it. Talk about the tail wagging the dog

Interesting question. I "attempted" to take a "quick" inventory over the Christmas holidays.

Roughly 29 loco's, 1 Virginian trainmaster, 1 Erie GP7, 7 C&) Steam Engines, and 20 C&O Diesels. I am also counting A-B-A and A-A lashups as ONE engine. I have to get a couple of more Virginians since my layout has an interchange w/ the Virginian RR. As for the Erie, it is an ATLAS GP-7 that I purchased at a train show 12 years ago fully intending on stripping the paint and redoing it for the C&O. I have since fell in love w/ it and just lash it up w/ some C&O geeps. NOT that prototypical, but hey... I make the rules in my basement!

As for the rolling stock. Fuhhhgeetabout it! I "think" I have about 250 cars assembled, and about 200 kits I purchased thinking I would put them together on that "snowy day". I love buying kits. I have a "life time" of assembling boxed up in my basement.

Let's see....10 steamers and 16 big diesels(SD45 to 90's,a pair of AC4400's,a pair of DD40AX's).Only a few are decoder equipped so decoders are my priority now but I'd be interested in a Veranda and/or a turbine if I could find one at a fair price.

230+ freight cars-- P2K, Athearn, Walthers, MDC, Accurail, Mckean
25 passenger cars-- Athearn

I sold all my crap LL, Bachmann, Tyco stuff off, and the ones I couldn't are used for airbrush practice.

OK, my engines go back to my childhood, some as far back as my Grandfather! Currently I have the following numbers in stock:

27 Locos (both steam and diesel)
36 Carriages
38 Wagons

So when I come to transfer over to DCC my decoder bill is going to be sky high!

I guess I am typical - been in the boby since the 60's and have done several 'clean-outs'. I still have:

40+ engines
250+ frt cars
7 pass cars
5 cabooses

About 50 of the frt cars are still 'projects' to be completed(or even started). The 5 steamers are DCC/Sound equipped, and about 16 diesels are DCC equipped. Most of the other engines are 'display case' stuff and I doubt if I will ever put a decoder in them.
