The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Laugh Laugh Somehow I had to read all the way through your post before I caught on to the fact that your history lesson was a complete joke! Laugh Laugh

Personally I detest mayonnaise!

So I’ll take a burger without mayo and caul slaw on the side without mayo and what ever else comes with mayo without mayo please. Oh, please remove the mayo from my table, it’s giving me PTSD!

F.Y.I I’m ordering all this food to celebrate Sinko de Mayo, we rid the world of a significant shipment of mayonnaise!

Regards, Isaac

Good afternoon all.

Chloe - A Coke float please. Thanks.

Ken - Glad you have decided to kick the smoking habit! Keep up the good work at it, you will feel much better for it!

Lion - Has him found server glitch of him yet? I just had to replace my HDD on my main computer at home recently, and deactivating Windows was not exactly fun... Server issues sometimes even less fun yet, I know...

Steven NWP - Good job on getting the j*b. It is not easy sometimes...

Ray - Glad the injury was not worse. That could have been way bad!

Ed - You mentioned the Orioles are back in your area, I just had a humming bird looking for the feeder in my front yard that was not yet hanging... Just a heads up.

W*^k - Still going well with the newest j*b. This week I have mandatory overtime though... Not loving that, but the pay should be nice!

Trains - I found a second-hand passenger excursion train set recently, at a very good price, so snagged it up. So, once the layout is back up, and in its expanded state, I will have a new train to run.

Just was checking in, before finishing the ribs I'm making for dinner.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer Ed a Crown Royal and Brent a Royal Hudson and leave a stein outside for Ulrich.

Ray Man you are beating that joke to death! I think this is what, the 6th year you posted it in a row? I don't mind at all, just knew it was coming.

None smoking front. Day 5 and still have resisted the ugre for a cigarette. Today was a little harder, saw a problem that really up set me. Took the wind right out of my sails. Still I hung in there.

Why do a lot Excursion Steam Train's have Diesel attached to them? With this being #4014 first run, may be worried about a break down? But with #844 as the second engine and it a proven performer why the diesel?

4014 sure looked pretty! If it make it around St Louis I will go see her!

 Later, Ken

A, dynamic braking.

B, cab signaling

C, possibly to conform to PTC rules.

D, in case both steam engines break down.

I was on a trip with the Reading 2102 and the 4070 double-headed over Horseshoe Curve back in 1977. The 4070 broke an eccentric rod (or actually the connecting pin came out). We were dead in the water, blocking the Penn-Central Altoona-Pittsburgh main line.

This was probably one more reason that railroads decided to use a "belt & suspenders" approach to steam fantrips.

Cheers, Ed

Hi Everyone,

Futunately, we don't have to suffer through any more references to Star Wars and mayonnaise for another year.  It's all good fun.

4014:  I would really like to see it under steam.  I can't even imagine what it sounds like.  Would've liked to have seen the locomotive being moved from the LA County Fairgrounds.  I bet that was some process to watch.  BTW, in the same location as where 4014 was displayed for all those years, there is also a cab forward, an SP 4-10-2, and a UP 4-12-2.

Ray:  I'm glad you didn't suffer much damage.  I know how important fingers are to a musician.

i may have actually seen a UP 4-8-4 go by once. I was very young, 4 maybe 5.  The UP would alternate steam and diesel for their passenger service through the area.  The diesels were most likely E units, and I later learned the usual steam locomotives were 4-6-2 Pacifics.  Being fascinated by trains I would rush to the curb to see the trains go by.  I just remember that one day the steam locomotive was coming and it sounded different, much louder and more powerful (frightening) sounding.  I later saw a picture of a 4-8-4 running on the tracks near where I lived.  Could what I heard and saw have been a Northern?  Dunno, but it could have.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Thank you, Rick. I just washed and rinsed out the feeders today. I'll get a batch of nectar going later. Better to have the feeders hanging a week too early than a day too late!

Good Morning All,

A regular and a blueberry donut please Zoe.  Rain has stopped,  sun is out, looks to be a nicer day than we've had. Back in the shop at least for light duty. Have steering racks to build and some parts to sort. I'll do some paperwork whilst waiting for the rest to come in probably not until late as the main crew is coming back from Ca. and the rest don't wander in until it's 9'ish.

Good to hear from you Phil, if I get clearance I will go to Birmingham the 15th, if not, next time is Lime Rock Memorial Day weekend and that just to work.

Touched up ballast in the yards and started cleaning track. I use Scenic Express ballast (real rock) with a layer of 70% alcohol and then matt medium mixed with wet water and more 70% alcohol which flows out nicely. The one thing I noticed was the mixture now climbs the rails and coats everything so it was a couple of hours with the bright boy and a resharpened X-acto and I still have to do something with the contacts at the points. Probably put too much adhesive on though I did use a dropper to apply the mix. I will bring some of the metal polish home I use in the shop on aluminum bodywork (paste form) and see if that does the trick. It's all more critical with the DCC as without any "stay alive" capacitors, the power drops out around the turnouts.

Hang in there Ken, you're making us proud. Hope you enjoy your trip Garry - I'm envious. Anyone hear from Ulrich of late?

Time to see if I can be useful today.   Cheers, J.R.

OT Firefox there is a new version that has fixed most people's problems

Sound asleep, I hear from my wife: Did you pick out a blanket and cabinets?

Me what?

Did you pick out a blanket.

Me: no

She never woke up, and later snored quite noisily.  She also let out a woop at some point.   I on the other hand, heard the downstairs clock strike 12, 1,2 and 3.  When she stopped snoring the dog started.

She has no memory of our conversation last night.

PAX cars no longer have steam heat. They need the growling motor for HEP.

I have seen one steam engine and three diesels on Steamtown trains into E Stroudsburg PA.

The growlers have the host road pilots on board. It may be that the host road requires the diesels, thill that Line is an NS line (AFIK) but Lackawana Susquehana Growlers ride the road.

Cool and cloudy this morning.  A good morning for bacon and eggs.  The coffee tastes good after the two mile walk this morning.

Before I retired, I had great visions of having time to take trips -- just like Kevin and Garry are doing.

We attempted a trip to Colorado taking Daisy our dog with us.  We had a hotel which allowed dogs, etc.  What we found was that we had to eat fast food.  We couldn't leave the dog in the hotel room if we went to a restaurant - she would bark and tear things up.

Long story short, we have not taken the trips we wanted.  Now my wife is beginning to say she'd rather stay home anyway.  It may be that I will attempt some trips by myself.

I'm not sure I will be able to park the car without her telling me where to park, how to park, and without being asked 42 times if I locked the doors.

Anyway, I am envious of the people going to Ogden.  I hope we get to see some good pictures.

We had our first Orioles at the feeders this morning.  Beautiful birds.

Have a great day, everyone.

Good morning.   Kind of cool and cloudy in Minnesota here too.

That doesn't keep Judy from trying to have fun though.  She wants to put her jacket on and go ride around the lake with me in this thing.

I'll be a sport.  I will feel rather silly though.

I got a bit of an improvement you could make to that... thing!

Put flanges on the wheels!

Then Tom Sawyer out the work of building a track for it to friends and call it a ”railroad building re-enactment”!

Looks like you have the ditch lights, now for a headlight, horn, marker lights, control stand, brake wheel, bell, beacon/strobe lights, etc.

Gasp.... GASP!!!.....  Ah I guess that should have read "...plastic bag over my left hand, and head to the shower.  LOL Whistling

Removed the bandage on my hand this morning and it looks to be healing up nicely.

I have increased the length of runnubf over at the fiel house.  I am now up to almost 4 laps of running and am now doing 23 total laps.  I feel good and will continue the program as long as I can!

Wednesday the crew will arrive to start the demo part of the remodling at my house.  I will probably not get over to the field house untill afternoon when they are finished. I will probably have yo cover all my compiuter equiment during that time as well.  I expect they will be creating a lot of dust doing the demolishing to start the project.

Have some outdoor stuff to do this afternoon and the sun is out.  Nice day here in Finger Lakes Region of NYS!

Catch you all later!

Yes.  It appears that one of those continious updates that failed and nothing else could happen since that was hung up.  I could not get it to restart from the top.

I had to pull the server out of the rack, remove the battery, and use a screwdrive to short out the solder pades. (to cheap to put in jumper pins.)

This cleared the issues, then I had to re-enter the typical CMOS data, and then it booted just fine.

I will shortly update this from Server 2016 to Server 2019.

Good Afternoon,

A cloudy and very cool day, as in 40F, here today so will be staying indoors.

Ray, I can relate to the shower cap in the shower. When I had my accident on safari, I used a shower cap to protect the wound on my face and also when we were on game drives to keep the dust and dirt out.

We have the migrants coming through now as in Lincoln and Fox Sparrows. The warblers should be here soon.

I ran the N scale yesterday for a bit. I have a loco that was in for consignment sale that the store said wasn't running properly so I took it home. It wasn't the decoder as they said. The headlight is on permanently as the pickup is in the loco and I'm not brave or foolish enough to try to take apart a Model Power N scale Pacific just to disconnect the light or attempt to wire it to the decoder in the tender. It was flikering and it was just dirty track at the store. Runs fine on my layout with only a flicker when going through a turnout. It is a smooth runner but just doesn't have enough pull for the grade on my layout. It will only pull 3 heavyweights up before it starts slipping.

I'm starting to get the old spring sailboat urge. After owning a boat for 35 years, I still miss the spring prep and excitement of launching and the first sail. It usually happened in  the last 2 weeks of May. I don't regret selling the boat but do miss it from time to time.

Ken, the Crown Royal you so generously serve is actually distilled just north of Winnipeg in the same little town where I kept my sailboat. The town is Gimli that has the largest Iclandic population outside of Iceland.

Time to do something,

CN Charlie

SSPOT - Looks like the right locale for a Florida dual gage railway but you are correct, the Key West Extension looks to be single gage. Was there a section or two inter island that got dual gage? Perhaps to accomdate a quarry or something else? Looking through the Flagler collection on the Extension, I don't see anything similar.     J.R.

Ah, Yes. that *IS* the New York City Subway, Far Rockaway Brnch. What you are mistaking for dual gauge is really the guard rails that would prevent a derailed truck from leaving the structure.  All good structures have them.

And you might have noticed the distinctive PRR railings that the LIRR used when they built that branch before they quit service there and gave teh line to NYCT.

Hey Diners.

Twice the fun today.  I got back home from our little pedal car ride around the Lake and my Oatman hotel and saloon shirt I prepaid on vacation was in the mail today.

So happy.... Is that a badass shirt or what?

They were sold out of this shirt when I was down there.  They're the number one seller you know.
