Another one who

  1. Never watched an episode of GoT.
  2. Never had any desire to watch an episode of GoT.
  3. Was fatigued by all of the "news" coverage about GoT.

never saw GoT, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Big Bang Theory, 12th Rock from the Sun.

High 80's and humid today, 4 schools closed in Baltimore.  Did they not know they should install air conditioning?

J.R.

For rotten wood there is a product called Git-Rot. It is a liquid, drill several holes into (1/16) the bad wood, it is then flooded, I used a syrenge, and a 1 inch brush to baste the surrounding wood.

I cures, and reacts with the rotten wood to harden it to it's original strength. It will turn the teeth on a handsaw.

I have used it on two different boats I owned that had rot in the stem piece, and some of the boat frames. Satisfied both times.

Where you sistered the rafters with marine plywood, bolted. you probably will not live long enough to worry about replacement.

I am a big fan of serial drama television. I am especially in love with the idea of shows that have a limited run time and tell a huge story from beginning to end.

.

Unfortunately, in the United States, we cannot figure out how to do this correctly. The Japanese have it down-pat perfect.

.

Shows that did it right:

.

Sons of Anarchy

Battlestar Gallactica

Star Trek Deep Space 9

Big Bang Theory

.

Shows that have let me down:

.

Breaking Bad: The last season was a pure money grab.

Mad Men: Should have ended it two seasons earlier.

Twin Peaks: Never should have gone past one season as intended.

Farscape: Cancelled after season four with nothing resolved.

Lost: The last season and finale were awful.

Dexter: The conclusion was unforgivably bad.

The Sopranos: Fade to black, really?!?!

Game of Thrones: Completely abandoned all character development in the last season.

.

These are shows I am currently watching that have me very worried:

.

The Good Place: This is going off track fast

Schitt's Creek: Maybe should have ended after season 4

.

I know I will get sucked into the next one. I never learn.

Kristin shot JR. That was another terrible moment in television history. All that time to figure out who done it, just for it to be the most minor character in the cast that no one cared about.

Never much of a GoT guy here either.  I hear the books were way better, but like others have mentioned, I prefer my sword-and-board action a'la Tolkein.  Give me some of that any day.

Had a fun little hiccup with my track plans.  I went to verify the location of the breaker box on my plan so that I didn't place a track where a 30-amp breaker would be, and I found out I mis-measured the mechanical area, which cost me two feet of prime real estate.  Re-works are underway now.Embarrassed

Is it still "planning paralysis" if you keep finding things you need to fix before you build?

Regardless, I've got some home maintenance projects that'll be keeping my wood shop busy until fall, so I've got that long at least until I can really think about doing anything.  Meanwhile, I've got to replace porch railings and part of the roof, re-point a chimney, paint, garden, refinish tables.... yeah.  Good thing I enjoy that stuff. Wink

Yes. I was one of those who started cursing because I thought that the cable had gone out.  I'm still angry over that ending.  Those who were responsible for that need to be wacked  Mafia Gangster emoticon (Bad boys emoticons)

So far as GOT is concerned, I will never buy a George R.R. Martin book again.  I read all of the issued books, but now he is stalling about the completion of the series.  Yet he has time to write other books.   I will not be fooled by him again.  Another one who needs to be punished

Good Afternoon,

A happy Victoria Day to all my fellow Canucks. We have a civic holiday here to celebrate the Queen's Birthday. Well it was Queen Victoria's and the day has stuck ever since.

I have never seen an episode of Game of Thrones. We watch series on PBS such as Downton Abbey and Victoria but nothing much on other channels. I have watched a few episodes of Schitt's Creek as it is a CBC production but it didn't click with me.

I spent most of the afternoon sitting in a lawn chair watching the birds in the yard.

Ken, I really admire you for stopping smoking. Sounds like you have a major project ahead with the rafters.

Well time to think about supper.

Thank you for sharing what you have. Judging by the crowds, maybe I am better off to have been in Utah a couple weeks ahead of all the excitement. I am glad you enjoyed your adventure.

The first season is not very good. After you get past all of the "fish out of water" and "Green Acres" jokes, and they get into character development, it really becomes an interesting tale. Once the family gets to know one another and finds out how much they really love each other, it becomes a very touching story line.

the CSCl Autumn is coming into Prince Rupert carrying my two Royal Hudsons. With any luck I should have them in a couple of weeks.

It is a cool wet 13c on the West Coast today, however sun and warmth will return soon.

I have been really enjoying the last spike pics, thanks for posting them. I wonder what rail crossing of the Rockies was the toughest to build and what one is the toughest to maintain in the winter even today. Just how many RR Rocky Mountain crossings are there anyway.

We just downgraded our cable TV package as other than hockey we do not watch much on TV other than movies on Netflix, Crave or Amazon which we get for free.

I tried watching Breaking Bad but after five episodes I could not stand it any more. I do not have the patience for dysfunctional people in real life never mind watching them at length on TV.

During one of my painful periods I binged the show Lost and really enjoyed it a lot. I found it to be like a dream you hope to have again night after night. It was good adventure with just enough sci-fi and fantasy in it to hook me. Have not seen GOT but may give it a shot as the body is protesting the amount of exercise it has been getting and I need to give it a break. As far as the other shows that seem to be on everybody elses radar, I will watch them when I am in the old folks home. Too much livin to do to be sittin around on my butt.

The kid came home in poorer shape than when he left for Ottawa in last Sept. We had a situp competition and I crapped out at 100, he stopped with lots of gas left at 200. He is working on getting his 8 pack back. My Daughter even joined in and did really well, she has good muscle tone from riding a lot, I was surprised how well she did as she does not work out at all.

John, I know what you mean about not wanting a phone. When I worked on the ramp at the airport I had three phones and two radios strapped to me all going all at the same time while loading airplanes. In the later years I got rid of the three phones when they gave me a device that had multiple capabilities in it, I was in Vancouver and could talk to my counterpart in say Montreal or even Europe (not the U.S. though) with the push of the button just like a walkie talkie. It also had multiple phone lines in it. I still had to carry a couple of radios though. I had enough of any com devices by the time I had retired, now, give me peace and quiet thankyou.

Well I am on dinner as the girls are off riding and will be hungary when they get home so best get to it.

All the best to all.

 Afternoon Diners

TF Can I have to open of a Soffit? I have seen some on line where the aluminum cover is all there is. I have seen some like mine that is plywood with 3"X12" holes cut in to them like mine? I have thinking along the lines of cutting 2 section of plywood leaving a 4" gap the entire lenght of the soffit to help let the heat out.

You can do that Ken.  The ventilation in your soffits isn't to let heat out, that's the roof vents job on top of your roof by the peak.  The heat rises out of the roof vents.  The fresh air comes in through the intake vents in your soffits to replace the air that is flowing out of the top of your roof.

You can have a 4 inch channel the whole length of your house in your soffits.... airflow is good.

You just need to remember,  nature wants to get in and you have to prevent that.  Squirrels, Birds, Yellow Jackets, Wasps, Hornets will invade your house if you give them a chance.  These Critters will chew through pet screen.

To do a 4-inch ventilation channel you would have to staple 5 1/2 to 6 inch wide 1/4 inch grid hardware cloth with aluminum screen sandwiched underneath the hardware cloth and nail trim boards over it on each side of the channel to hold it all in place securely.  A woodpecker will peck right through aluminum screen like it's a toy.  A squirrel will claw through it.  That's why you need the quarter inch grid hardware cloth on top of the screen.

My dad and I did that on the cabins at the resort after we re-roofed them.  I remember we only had a two inch channel, I think that was plenty for a cabin.

Now critters can't get in and you have more than adequate ventilation.  Your new roof will never burn out prematurely as long as you have an adequate number of roof vents at the peak of the roof.  Your roofer should have taken care of that.... hopefully.

Hope this helps.

OK, let the sarcastic comments begin ... I am the only person in North America to have never seen a single episode of GofT.  (I also don't have a cell phone!)

I had a T-Mobile "pay as you go" phone when I was making the daily drive to the salt mines. Cost me about $25/year! I let the minutes lapse a few years ago after retirement. Don't miss it one bit. I play Game of Thrones when I do my morning ritual with a Model Railroader in my hands Whistling. Maybe not the same throne you guys are talking about??  Never saw the TV show.

I wish everyone good health and happiness —

Hello Diners,

I didn't realize GoT was a TV show until a couple of weeks ago.  I thought it was some stupid video game.

Garry:  The pictures of the golden spike events and 4014 & 844 are really nice.  I've see a couple of videos on youtube of 4014 under steam.  Phenomenal!!  Thanks for sharing your experience.

Well, apparently I am in good company. In the last couple of decades I can honestly say that I have never seen a full episode of Seinfeld nor any other of the popular shows. I have spent less than two minutes on any episode of GoT, and not much more than that on The Big Bang Theory.

I used to be a huge Star Trek fan, and the take offs were pretty good too, but I seem to have found other things to do rather than watching 20 minutes of commercials every hour. Somebody mentioned watching birds in their backyard.Thumbs Up

Good Morning All,

It's stopped raining again and cooled off a bit from the 80's yesterday. I'll just have a regular to go please Zoe. Trucks are back and scattered all over the yard. We need to get them emptied and up the hill to storage as they start on the roof here at the shop today.

Spent more time on the layout last night and found a couple of mistakes I made routing drops to the wrong buss wires. I had wondered why I kept getting continuity between two of the zones. If I have to do it over, I will color code each buss with different colored wire instead of trying to put numbered flags on them. The service yard is all in good order now, but I have a couple of issues in the classification yard to sort out. Good progress though and I can stand for more than 15 minutes on the bad foot so that is encouraging as well.

Garry- thanks for posting the pics from Utah. Not sure I would have enjoyed the crush of humanity involved with the event.

I try not to watch too much tv - did watch Star Trek at least the second iteration and the spin offs. Mostly well written diversion. And Babylon Five - just the same. In truth, I prefer to read and usually do that if the CFO has the tube on. Makes her crazed but I try not to give her too much to complain about. I would have been happy to have just read the Game of Thrones books if only the so and so had gotten off his kiester and finished the job. I think it's been a decade now with out a new book?

Oh well, time to see if I can be useful. Catch Y'all Later,  J.R.

And for the record, no one shot me.

I don't understand why some people (more on Facebook than here) are saying that they've never watched Game of Thrones (or Big Bang Theory, or whatever) as if that's something to be proud of. Just because something is popular doesn't make you a cool outsider for not liking it. Not everything is for everybody. Tastes differ.

Instead of talking about what popular thing we don't like, how about sharing some less popular thing you enjoy that others might find interesting, as well? I'll start. Other than model trains, my other hobby is playing Champions, a tabletop role-playing game based on comic-book superheroes. I create the world and the people who inhabit it (including the supervillains), and my players create original superheroic characters that battle against the forces of evil.

Join in and tell us about some obscure movie, show, book, hobby, or other interest that you enjoy. (No, trains don't count!) If you do, you can have some Cupcakes of Ice and Fire.

Not trying to be cool.  I brought it up because I thought it was funny that one can't watch the news, read the paper, or talk to my daughters without hearing about Game of Thrones, and I hadn't seen a single episode.  That's not to say I won't one day watch it, although since I don't have HBO, it will have to be some other network or I finally start watching things streamed.

To get a cupcake, I DO enjoy old science fiction movies.  I don't think any computer generated sci-fi movies today can compete with Forbidden Planet, the original Day the Earth Stood Still, and even most of the hokie "B" 1950s movies.  I watch them any time they are on TV.

Years ago, living in New Orleans, I enjoyed Star Trek conventions.

The hit of the conventions was watching episodes of the original Star Trek series on the big screen.  All of us nerds loved it.

Yes, I know that. I think the system was glitching earlier or something. It said 299, some I did my first post, then when I finished that it still said 299, so I wrote my second post, then it said 301, so I edited the second one.

I joined an RPG club at school last year that primarily focused on Dungeons and Dragons, probably the most popular of tabletop RPGs. It was a great idea, had loads of fun! RPG are pretty much eternal fun, at least if you don’t move along super slow!

Regrettably I moved last summer and I don’t know anyone who does RPG games were I live now. Nonetheless a great experience, highly recommend RPG games of any kind, really fun hobby!

.

Steve, I will join you in a game of Champions anytime! I have not played in probably 20 years, and I am sure the rules have been updated many times since then, but I loved the game.

.

Champions, and Steve Jackson's Car Wars were the two gaming systems that captured my imagination best when I was in High School. The mechanic where you had to build a hero (or car) within specific parameters with built in strengths and weaknesses was almost more fun than actually playing the game.

.

I used to carry character build sheets with me everywhere and tinker with statistics whenever I could.

.

Great fun.

.

For current hobbies, other than Model Railroading and Table Top Wargaming, I am also active in CosPlay. This is a hobby where you build a costume of a favorite character, then act like, and try to adopt the personality of that character. It is great fun, but due to my physical size, I am limited on charaters I can portray.

.

Nobody wants to encounter a 6'7" Misty!

.

I mostly build props for family and friends, but I have four costumes (Puddles, Professor Utonium, VI, and Brock) that I wear from time to time at conventions.

No pictures of that, when I started.  All the pictures were on an old phone that met a tragic drowning, and I could never get all of the construction photos off of it.
