Good Morning,

Say Lion, thanks for the free wildebeest but do we have to catch them? They can run very fast!

Dave, we use concord grape jelly as that is what we were told to use by a local bird expert. It does work but oranges cut in half work better in our experience. You can buy a special shallow glass dish with a hanger made especially for oriole jelly feeding.  We have a couple and they do work plus are easy to clean. Lots of birds here too. The yellow rump warblers are eating suet from the suet log.

It rained here last night which was a good thing as it has been dry here so far in May.

No errands planned today. We try to avoid going out on the weekends to avoid the traffic. Much better during the week.

Tomorrow we are taking the MIL out for lunch for Mother's Day.

I am going over my N scale stuff again and may sell off the 2-6-6-2. It is a nice loco but nothing that ran on rails up here and it doesn't pull very well. I plan on getting the roster down so that most fit on the layout. That means the RS11, RS18, Trainmaster, 4-8-2, 2-8-0 and Budd car stay. I have 2 PA's but they are in a case along with the D&H passenger cars. I might sell some Atlas rolling stock as it doesn't couple as close as Micro Trains stock. I've sold off half of my N scale locos and have done the same with HO.

If it warms up I might wash the car.

Have a great day,

CN Charlie

Are the sprung trucks the cause of more derailments over rigid frame trucks?

.

I use nothing but Kadee sprung and equalized trucks and I insist on ZERO derailments. A good quality sprung truck will keep at least three wheels in contact with the rail through any problems. A rigid frame truck will lift two wheels.

Birds?

We got birds in North Dakota.  I can hear the Mourning Doves most of the time, and of course the meadow larks... But the ones I can see are the Crows and Hawks.

Those Hawks come right past our dining room window... Our window is 10' tall by 80' wide, and you can see clearly for about 8 miles, and the horizon about 40 - 60 miles away.

Anyway the Hawks are fun to watch, and you don't have to feed them, they can figure it out for them selves.

When I was a kid, Boy's Life magazine had an article about all the strange animals that were found in the sewer system of New York City.

They must have missed the lions that have invaded the subway system.

Those are very deep, brick lined sewers.

When I was working for St. Francis on 33rd street we had water backing up into our basement. I called the city water department, and they told me that it was not possible for that sewer to back up. They came out and opened a man hole to show me freely flowing water avout 30 feet below the surface of the road.

They did not even look in our building, but told us to call our plumber.

Our plumber cam and put on wading boots, and found the drain in the basement and fished it out. Water all gone.

A buddy of mine suggested Walmart due to their high starting wage, over 10 bucks an hour, when I mentioned this to my mother she just about flipped, she said that if I go to work at Walmart I can move out, since I probably wouldn't be able to afford rent on my own I am inclined to listen to her. Not sure why she doesn't want me to work at Walmart but oh well.

.

What EXACTLY are your plans? You mentioned going to college next year, but it is May, and if you have not been accepted by now, you probably will not be going.

.

Wal-Mart is one hell of a good choice for a non-skilled non-educated entry level employee. They promote from within, and growth potential is practically unlimited.

.

15 years ago, when my wife had not worked in 7 years, we needed some extra money for Christmas. She took a part time job at Wal-Mart as a seasonal employee. 8 years after that she was overnight manager of a large Super-Center making well into six digits. She quit her job two years ago, and her seperation payout was staggering.

.

What other options are you looking at?

I am so glad to hear you say that.  I grow tired of people who deride Walmart, the people who work there, and the people who shop there.

In my little town, we can buy at Walmart what we would otherwise have to travel 50 miles to a city to buy.  They have a starting wage $3 over minimum wage.  And the old argument that they drive out competition is silly.  Out here, there is no competition.  If someone doesn't like Walmart, then don't go there.

Hey, what about the railroads for non educated, non skilled work. Yes you need education/skills in railroading but the railroad gives it to you! You don’t need any prior knowledge to join the railroad, just got to go though a little training.

Of course that what some old, retired railroaders told me. Railroad sound like a pretty good job to me!

Way to go Ken,  I always knew you could do it.  I did it.  At that time, Ulrich and other Forum members here helped me a lot.

You guys need to see what I get away with.  It's really rather funny.  It's Mother's Day but I'm sure some of you know the drill.

Judy isn't my mother but I still damn well better get flowers and a card when she comes home.

It was all picked through,  here's what I ended up with.

They are orchids or something like that.  They smell up the whole dining room and living room.  The gals like that.  But check out the card, I took a paper plate to write a card.

I know my Judy,... she started calling me pops, so I started calling her mops.  I got a smooch, one of those licks behind the ear and another smooch.

I'm gold, can you believe itLaugh Whistling

TF,

I believe those are lilies, and yes, they are quite fragrant. That's why they used to be very popular for funeral arrangements. I'm not throwing shade on your choice. They are beautiful flowers and we buy them regularly. However, if you have a pet, keep the lilies out of reach. IIRC the pollen is poisonous and it will stain everything it comes in contact with.

The mime is correct Kevin, the French mime.  I do remember that.  The film was 43 years ago.  I think the word was no.  I'm not sure though.

Thanks for your concern Dave,  we no longer have any pets.  I have heard that about lilies though.

Take care you guys.  See ya soon.

Evening diners,

KEVIN WHAT IN THE NAME OF THE FRIENDLY SOUTHERN PACIFIC GOT YOU TRIGGERED!?!?!?

I don't think I need to explain myself to you especially due to your tone but I'll elaborate anyways.

My plans you ask? Well as of right now I'm attending college in the spring of 2020, remember I graduated a whole year early from HS, so technically it's one semester after I was going to graduate had I not busted my *** the last year, yes Walmart could be a decent career choice perhaps it wouldn't be, right now I'm weighing my options, I've got my whole life ahead of me, that's a scary thing, I'm not going to go after the first thing that pops up.

So while I appreciate your concern and interest in my future I can do without the attitudeDots - Sign

Brent, thank you for asking about the golf course, well I basically got hired two weeks ago, originally for mornings in the cart barn (I would maintain the golf carts) well the following Monday I was to come in to fill out hire paperwork, over the weekend my parents talked with me and we agreed 6 am simply wouldn't be feasible for me right now, I would have to get up at about 4:45 to be ready and there for 6, so Monday I went to discuss the schedule with the manager, I told him my concerns and he said he actually didnt need me for the mornings due to rehiring someone else for it over the weekend, so we discussed other possibilities, he needed a pro shop attendant 11am-6pm, problem is I work at the Y 12-5 Tuesday through Friday, so we agreed to put it on hold pending me getting the y figured out, well this week I told him I could swap to mornings 8-12 at the Y and be at the pro shop 12-6, they're about a mile apart so it would work fine and he said that would work, I just needed the days he would need me to tell my supervisor at the y and the lady I was going to swap with, he doesn't get back to me till today on which days I'd be working then demands I give an answer today on whether I can do those shifts, naturally I cant answer him because I had called the lady at the y to see if she could swap with me those days and hadn't heard back yet, so basically he said unless I can give a answer like today, he would look elsewhere. He said if tomorrow I have an answer to call and he'll consider it, frankly I don't know what to do, I don't think it will work out there based on his approach to management, I probably will call tomorrow and just thank him for considering me for the position and cooperating as much as he did and tell him I wouldn't be able to do it right now, I think that's the most professional way of handling it, I've done all I can and it just wasn't meant to be, I can't split myself in half.

Today I did 7.15 miles on my bike, took me 45 minutes too! I also won an Xbox One S I have been bidding on so that's all good.

Harrison, 55 degrees?! Buddy I'm sorry but come push mow 6 acres of country grass (theres a difference between city and country grass) down here in Louisiana in 95 degrees with humidity so high it punches you in the face when you walk outside and after sitting in the shade for a minute or two you look like you took a shower with your clothes on, then, then you have truly mowed grass!Laugh I'm just messing with ya, you've got a good work ethicThumbs Up

Heres some shots from Saint Francisville Louisiana, near Bayou Sara.

This poor ICG caboose has water up to the bottom of the wheel treads.

This is when theres no water.

This I looking towards where I shot todays photos.

And heres one more of the flooding, that's water from the Mississippi River by the way.

Goodnight from the soggy, swampy, rain soaked bayou state, the water is still rising.

LION does not know where these horse feathers come from, but him has NEVER had any issues getting into college classes. 'course him ever went to a Big-Fancy-College...

Him graduate High School #550 in a class of 560, then joined the Navy and went to Vietnam.

New York City Community College in Brooklyn,

Nassau County Community College in Uniondale,

St. Meinrad in Indiana,

Dickinson State College in Dickinson.

Got An associate degree in liberal arts (Magna *** laude)

Got an Associate Degree in Nursing (Magna *** Laude)

Got a Bastchelors Degree in Nursing (*** Laude)

[Nursing course can werck havoc with a GPA]

So LION dos not sea any issues with getting into a college.

LION never attended college full time, always part time, always with full-time work, and always paid my own way, never a loan.

*** Laude!  Silly computer. That latin word in that context says what is says and means what it means.

Pull that out and replace it with astirisks draws unneeded attention to that workd and now everybody has something else in mind  instead of a well earned degree.

Good morning.

Just checking in. I took some great photos of UP Big Boy 4014 and UP Northern 844 hauling the special train from Ogden Utah to Evanston Wyoming.

Hopefully , I can share pictures here next weekend .  As I said, I am not able to share photos with my IPhone in this forum even though I can in other sites.

I did not yet tell you we rode on a very nice scenic train on the Heber Valley Railroad on Thursday.  I heard they had a minor derailment involving a train loaded with people two days after we rode it . They suspended operations until a track switch is repaired.

Googling Heber Valley Railroad comes up with MRS1s. Is that what they were operating when you were there? I had no idea MRS1s were still a round and run by anyone. Also, was there ever a model of an MRS1. Just curious!

I remember watching that movie at the old Cooper Theatre in Golden Valley, when I was a kid, before it was torn down.  I think it was Marty Feldman with the funky eyes that was so hilarious.

I never laughed so hard when they were in the hospital room and started playing pong with the heart monitor and the patient was reacting to the ball as it was hitLaugh

Good Morning All,

Well at least it is morning for another 40 minutes. No coffee thanks, I'll just have an Orange Juice. Miserable weekend for me. foot blew up like a balloon and I had to get the crutches out as movement was impossible otherwise. Hard enough to navigate level ground let alone up and down stairs so no layout time at all. Rained all day yesterday as well but nothing at all like Steven is getting.

The school thing is different these days. I had resigned myself to my youngest delivering Chinese food for a career when he announced he was taking some classes at the community college. Lo and behold he got straight A's and continued. Transferred to one of our state colleges and got his degree averaging above a 4.0 GPA and then got accepted to grad school. This all from a square peg they spent 12 years trying to pound into a round hole. Once he does his disertation he plans on teaching and has a bunch of applications out there. Point is you just never know. For some, it is better to go straight from high school to college and keep the self discipline acquired intact, for others, wanting to go and taking it seriously is more important.    Cheers, J.R.

Good afternoon, everyone.  It's in the 60s today - beautiful!

Speaking of college, when I went I could work the summer in the factory and use that money to pay for a year of college.  Of course, I went to school when the country was still young.

The advantage of early registration is that grants are often given early.

I did not walk this morning, and I am feeling this afternoon. Very sleepy with no energy.  Once your body gets used to exercise, it doesn't react well when you skip it.

We are having an oriole explosion at our house.  Today my wife and I counted 6 pairs.  They are really kicking up a storm, fighting each other for food and territory.  They are beautiful, but they are fierce with each other.

Have a good rest of the day.

Sea... Her on the layout of the LION is the Canal Street Station. The station itself looks great, but what about the rest of the visible crud. Well it is supposed to be a subway layout and so there are no houses, buildings or streets down here.

LION is going to have to make his vignettes more vignette like.
