Ed,

thanks for posting the picture of the GG1. The Raimond Loewy styled GG1 is of unmatched elegance in the world! Too bad, that the PennCentral as well as Amtrak ruined the elegance in later years with their rather unsightly paint schemes for her.

Edit: I got top of the page, so order the poison of your choice - it´ll be on my tab!

Happy times!

Conversation overheard at a train show

  • "Did you ever drive one of these?"
  • "No"
  • "I did in New Jersey, they had those tiny little windows and a big hood, you couldn't see anything"

I missed the whole login problem.  My problem was either the whole forum or none of the threads would load.

Tired today, got stuck in DC traffic for nearly 3 hours.  Got nothing done today.

Afternoon Diners! Great to be inside again, 2 days in a row! Surprise

Flo, the gang and I will have a Beer on Ulrich dime please.

What a caboose weather we are having. Very overcast and sort of raining. Just a yuck day!

Friday is my wifes last P/T treatment and Iam glad when it is over. Far as her walking I am pretty sure it is as good as it is going to get, well in her mind.

Have not heard anything about her back X-Ray yet. I sure hope there is no facture. If there is, well more P/T. Worst part on her P/T is there waiting room is cold!

 Later, Ken

Hey all.  Hope you are all well.  I'm really down today:

Today is the 6 month marker since I found my dad dead.  It hasn't been an easy day at all.  House work is coming along....

My new bathroom.  The old one was unusable, so I needed this badly.

Oh and my big news- I'M GOING TO THE 2019 DAYTONA 500 IN DAYTONA BEACH FLORIDA!

The season opening race for the NASCAR Monster Energy cup series. The Super Bowl of American car racing. A buddy of mine got tickets, I'' be riding down with some mutual friends, and staying at his house... 9 miles from the speedway.  With the year I've had, I need this badly.  I need something going right for me.

Open house for our club has been going pretty great...Sure I'd love to see more people some days, but for the area we're in...we're doing well.  I can't wait for the train show at the end of January we put on.

I finally started my T-Trak modules, well the first of two anyway.  It's going to be an operating coal tipple in N scale.

(My Model Railroad, My Rules)

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

I agree, Ulrich. There have been some terrible paint designs over the years. The Amtrak bloody-nose, Rudolph scheme comes to mind and IMHO, the worst was the Conrail Bicentennial paint job:

Conrail.GG1_4800.Bicentennial.Philly by Charles Warren, on Flickr

The dark green with REAL gold leaf pinstriping is certainly the classiest.

For you detail modelers, here is what the very tip of the PRR five-stripe is supposed to look like:

You N scalers will have a chore at getting those .125" spacing correct!

Here's a "Virtual Tour" in-cab look-see of the GG1 at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania:

I've been in a few GG1 cabs. Some live, but I never got to ride one. To say it is close quarters is an understatement. PRR must have recruited submariners for their engine crews!

I hope everyone is well. Great job on the loo, Jimmy. I know the feeling you are having for your dad. My dad died in 1990 and I still have some "How I wish you were here" moments.

Regards to all who come here Smile  Ed

Re: my BIL's situation.

The bureaucratic stupidity is striking close to home! Get this - the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs can't talk directly to the Vancouver police because of privacy issues. They can only talk to my sister-in-law who then has to relay the information to the police and vise versa. To make things worse, to quote my SIL, "the Vancouver police aren't exactly on speed dial".

If that weren't enough, the Toronto Dominion bank won't release all the details of the credit card transactions that took place after the abduction to the Colombian police, again because of privacy issues. They were even reluctant to release the information to my SIL who's name is on the account! They know exactly where the transactions took place and they were sitting on the information!!!AngryBang Head

On a more positive note, we reached out to all of our friends asking if anyone might have any connections to Colombia and voila, a friend of a friend knows the Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs personally. They have brought the situation to the Minister's attention. You never know until you ask. I don't know what good that will do but it can't hurt.

The Colombian police have also found some videos of Ramo (the victim) which show him with other people the night he went missing.

CTV News Go did a piece on the situation if you are interested:

Dave,

again, I am speechless about the bureaucratic insanity of the involved institutions and their unwillingness to go above and beyond in supporting your family in this situation of need!

Makes me mad.

This case is really getting very close to me. Normally, you just hear about it in the news, but you don´t connect it to people you communicate with. I wish there were something we could do, but all there is for us is to hope and pray for a safe return of Ramo Gencay!

I live not far away from the North Sea shores and people there have a custom of putting a lit candle into a window when one of their loved ones is missing. We have a candle burning in our window for Ramo!

Let´s talk toy trains - part 3!

The Bure Valley Railway is a 15 in (381 mm) minimum gauge heritage railway in Norfolk, within The Broads National Park. The railway runs from Wroxham to Aylsham (9 miles or 14.5 kilometres) and is Norfolk's longest railway of less than standard gauge. It uses both steam and diesel locomotives.

The railway is built on the trackbed of the East Norfolk Railway (ENR). The ENR started in 1877 when the East Norfolk Railway opened from Norwich to Cromer, with an extension from Wroxham to Aylsham in 1880.

In 1952 the passenger service stopped, but the freight service continued.

This traffic ended in 1981 and the line through Aylsham formally closed on 6 January 1982. A weed-killing train ran in 1983 and track-lifting trains ran the following year.

The Bure Valley Railway opened on 10 July 1990 under the management of RKF Leisure which had purchased the trackbed. When the RKF's parent company, RKF Group Plc, went into receivership in January 1991, Broadland District Council moved quickly to acquire the line from the receivers as it feared that property developers might seize the opportunity to take control of the land. Agreement was reached with Ffestiniog Railway director Mike Hart to set up a new company, Bure Valley Railway (1991) Ltd, to lease and operate the line.

Enjoy!

Happy times!

Ulrich, thank you for your support. It means a great deal to us.

We are too dumbfounded to be mad. That will likely come later. Dianne is headed to Vancouver to be with her sister and her daughters. They have been very brave but their resilience is running thin.

Can you believe that my SIL has had nasty messages from internet trolls?!? How sick can people be? She has also had lots of support from strangers but I would say this. If you think you are doing a total stranger a kindness by contacting them directly in these circumstances then you are a bit of a self serving fool. My SIL has been inundated by well wishers who have found her email or her phone number or her facebook page and decided to try to get in touch personally. Back off please! You are not helping by contributing to her exhaustion.

Sorry, I'm starting to rant.

Dave, as far as I know, that little steamer was one of a small batch run of engines a British model railroader had built years ago. They sold for a considerable amount of money, just short of $1k, US currency that is.

Much more within reach to normal mortals is a HO scale standard gauge live steamer, such as those from Lutz Hielscher, which can be obtained as easy-to- assemble kits.

Ed,

thanks for posting the picture of the GG1. The Raimond Loewy styled GG1 is of unmatched elegance in the world!

IIRC he only made a few refinements to the actual design, and came up with the paint scheme.

His PRR design work was (IIRC) the streamlining on Broadway Limited K4 (uhh #3769?), the S1, T1, and I think a few diesels.

Also did lotsa cars and non-railroady stuff.

Correct, NEO. It was a fellow named Donald Dohner. Many consultants and representatives from Westinghouse, GE, Baldwin and designer/engineer George Gibbs. PRR was looking at the R1 and the P5a modified, which both shared the basic GG1 body style.

PRR bought undecorated kits from GE in Erie and shipped them to Altoona for finish work and painting. Funny thing, fifty-years later, Amtrak did the same thing when GE was too busy to finish AMD-103s Juniata did them at Altoona.

GG1_ Juniata 1935 by Edmund, on Flickr

Classic Trains had a fairly in-depth article about it a while back (Summer 2009). Personally I was a Henry Dreyfuss admirer. Loewy was somehow, just a little over the top for me. Although I like his contribution to the Presidential Air Force One scheme.

Cheers, Ed

Your son is an amazing young man. I'm sure that having to go before a board to prove his honesty was a traumatic experience, and I'm glad that he came out with flying colours.

Thanks, Dave, yes he was really freaking out about the review at the time as it doesn't happen to people that often. He has written two of his five exams and has received A+ in those two courses. Three more exams and he gets to come home for three weeks.

I am so sorry to hear about the bureaucratic issues that are adding to your pain of your missing BIL. I am a ways out of Vancouver, however, if I can do anything on this end let me know. When I was working I could sneak people on to air freighters if they had to get somewhere on short notice. Had to pack their own lunch and there was no in-flight entertainment but they got there.

We are gearing up for our third big blow in four days. The pineapple express from Hawaii brings 14c/56f temps and wind. Wind in excess of 100KMH expected today. The generator is ready to go to keep those Christmas lights and hockey games on. Mischief Only two out of five on our street are equipt to deal with emergency situations. It is the two blue-collar guys that get the chainsaws out and keep freezers running when things go downhill. The other three define dysfunction. My neighbour came over last week for help. His car battery was dead as he had been in Asia for six weeks. I gave him my battery charger, however, he was too worried about hooking it up so I had to go do it for him.Tongue Tied

Jason Shron has a new video out and I saw flashes of my Royal Hudsons on it. I won't post it as they get deleted as they are considered advertising I am guessing. I think Jason is a little bored over in China at this point in time.

Well, time to get on the bike for my killer twenty KMs before the power goes out. I can't believe the shape I am in right now. I have been eating for two or three though and the wife says it is like having another two kids added to the food bill.Laugh

Got a Christmas tree last night, had to get it by myself for the first time ever.Sigh Everyone is so busy right now that was the only option. Here is last years.

Got the train out and I think it may need a new motor soon, it sure has a lot of miles on it. At the last train show I was at, I told the G scale guys I had trouble keeping the track clean with all the sap and other goo getting on it. He pulled out one of those foam sanding blocks and said to use that so I bought one yesterday when I went to buy the tree. I would never use it on good track, however under the tree track is expendable.

OOH! here comes the wind, got to go get on the bike before it is too late.

All the best to all.

Afternoon folks,

Well I went to pick up my truck and she didn't want to go!? So I went back to the shop and the mechanic rode with me and saw that it was sluggish, he thinks my Cat melted down when the truck almost overheated, so it'll be mid next week now!Crying

Well she is blowin pretty good now. Over a 100kph just North of Vancouver. All the local ski hills have shut down.

Young Steven, I was unable to say what a splendid job you did on opening the diner this month having been cast adrift.Laugh Pennsylvania the birthplace of railroading in the U.S. Not sure about the rest of the America's I think Brasil or Argentina was one of the first as well. I guess I need to do some refresher reading.Hmm

Those catalytic converters can be expensive. My friend spent more than his explorer was worth on one.

Wife and Daughter are just getting ready to go ride the nags. Usually, the equestrian centre closes when the wind is like this. Could be a Sushi night if the power goes out, any excuse.Dinner

Can't believe it has been three years since Jeffrey died, still miss the post of his daily goings-on.

My Daughter has to quickly make up her mind about what she wants to take in University time is running out on that front for registration. It looks like a medical degree leading to forensics. Sounds like fun. She is smart like her brother so there will be plenty of scholarships coming her way. That is great for the train fund.

Jimmy, the Bathroom looks good.

I look back with great fondness on my Dad, he died in 1993. The fact that they tug at our heartstrings after they're gone is a good thing. We get that twinge only because they meant so much to us. It would be a shame if we didn't.

Well, I think I'll break down and have a Rum and Pepsi, or two. Haven't had a drink in a month or so. As long as the chainsaw doesn't need to be used for an emergency I'll enjoy the wind and Rum.

All the best to all.

I was hanging out at Bass Pro Shop with my mom, brother, aunt, and cousins when I ran into my friend Sarah, her sister and her sisters fiance, they don't live in Louisiana anymore either  (her parents moved to North Carolina) so it was really odd seeing them, it was nice though.

Afterwards I was joking to my family how I coulda been like this when I saw her.

Depending on the cost I might just straight pipe the cat if I can.

Gary as of the Dec 15th my step dad will be gone for a year. I have very mixed feels about this! My Mom handled things very badly and did not tell me till Christmas Eve when I called her! While in some ways I did not like him, I still loved him and thought of him as my Dad.

Train Front Started hacking and wacking on a Kato C&O oberservation car. Ran the bare chassis around the layout and it looks like after cutting out the side skirts it can make my 18" turns. It will be my first lite passanger car, it all ready has power pickup's on the trucks for classafactions lights.
