Wherever you want guys want the diner is fine by me. I usually just sit in the corner booth and listen anyway.  Heck, even Ulrich sat with me a while this month.  Forgot about the Johnny Cash tribute idea. As for “City of New Orleans”, I prefer Willie Nelson‘s version myself. Is what I recall hearing as a kid.

Two icons of music.

I am planning to do Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" for a concert this winter.

I'll post a recording of it so you guys can critique on how close (or far) I am from the original.

Sorry TF, I read your post after I posted mine. It took me a while to write it as I was up and down helping the boss.

I'll go to Nashville anytime as I have never been there. I have a good friend in the music bizz there and you would all recognize his name and I have never been to see him and his wife. They have stayed at my house when they come through. In fact, when they have been on tour they ask if they can stay with me instead of the hotel as they are sick of hotels.

Once they stayed over three nights and we were playing out on the back patio. A couple of days later the neighbour said that the music coming over the fence was better than usual a couple of nights ago. I wasn't sure how to take that.Laugh

I did tell him who it was and he said to invite him back again next time he is passing through.

Here ya go, our two hero's

Evenin folks,

Great lakes would be great! Just in time for the Fightin' Irish to go up against the Wolverines! Go Irish! And one of my best friends is a Michigan fan so Go Blue!Ick!

Also Tennessee would be fine, next spring/summer I'm thinking about making a run up there to the Rathole division for some railfanning.

Got the tires mounted on my truck! I went to the Farmers Co-Op tire shop to get them done, I helped the guy take the tires off and put them back on so he didn't charge me for the spare mounting and balance!

Here's Ol' Blue.

I can still do a burnout, it's harder but I can.

Afternoon all. It is yet another perfect day. 24c and sunny.

Ken, sorry you are taking another hit. It just doesn't seem to end does it? Your bottle is on me tonight.Thumbs Up

I beat the kid golfing yesterday by one stroke on the last hole. We had been tied for the five holes before that. He really played well. He won several golf tournaments through his school years and is a bit of a natural when it comes to that game. I found playing incredibly painful and would not have been able to keep it up.

He is on the plane in the morning and friends and family have been coming to say goodbye all day, bringing the poor college movie star kid Tims and Starbucks gift cards. He has enough to last him all year now.

His friends at the house he is sharing have the fridge full of food and have bought everything they can think of and can't wait till he gets there and he is pretty excited to go. He is paying the largest chunk of it all and gets the master suite in the house.

I don't care where the diner goes as long as it is somewhere new and people familiar with the area post pictures and/or videos. It is all good.

Had a long conversation with the kids on Wednesday of how they would prefer to handle our estate. As they are turning into adults there are options. We will update our will soon as should be done and they needed to be included in the decision making.

When I was young and my Dad was approaching retirement I remember him giving me advice. He said he never understood why people plan to cut back spending in retirement. He said you have way more time in retirement and need more money to spend than when your working.

He never owned a brand new car until he went out and bought one right after he retired. They traveled a lot and had a great retirement.

I really thought what my Dad said made sense and I made my first $3200.00 retirement contribution at age 17 and made the maximum contribution for the next 40 years. My kids will never have to work a day in their lives if they choose not to. They have big plans regardless.

Steven O, Thanks for posting that Steve Goodman video. I love listening to a man and his guitar sans anything electric except maybe a bass. I always think that the guy that wrote the song plays it best as only he truly knows what he was thinking when he wrote it. I may have to sit down with the twelve-string this week and give it a go.

I like it when Ulrich opens the diner. Like clockwork, it opens just as I am going to bed out here on the West Coast.Zzz

Did another killer 20kms in 61 minutes on the bike this morning and feel great. Usually, I do 10Kms in 27 minutes. I feel even better doing an hour so that may be the new routine. I put my little BS 4-4-0 on with a five-car train and some Gordon Lightfoot. That train has never faltered during my rides and I have never had to get off part way through and tend to it.

The boss is calling me to weigh the kids suitcases for tomorrow. The extra baggage charge will be memorable. I own lots of stock in Westjet so at least I'll get some of it back.Laugh

All the best to all.

I really love the idea of doing the Diner in the Great Lakes area.  I think November would be the perfect month for that.

The Edmund Fitzgerald ship sunk November 10th 1975.  Twenty nine crew members perished that day.

November would be a good month to do the Great Lakes area in Honor of this Brave Shipping Crew. These men must have been terrified that day.....Honor is a good thing. The ability to to include Honor is even betterWink

May I offer a suggestion?

How about "parking" the September Diner in the Great Lakes Region? This would allow us to re-visit grand old railroads, like the C.B.&Q. RR, the Illinois Central RR, the Rock Island RR and other fine railroads SOB, as well As the CN and the CP NOB.

I wouldn´t be able to contribute much to that venue, but I am sure other fellow diners will be able to fill the gap.

Good to see you back in the diner again Ulrich. Your friends miss you when you're gone too long.

That's cool and all well and good. I love the Great Lakes especially Lake Superior as it Harbors Duluth my favorite City.

I wonder if you forgot though. A month-and-a-half ago we were all talking about doing the Diner in Nashville Tennessee in September. We were planning to honor Johnny Cash who passed away September 12th 2003, 15 years ago.

Everyone loves Johnny CashSmile, Wink & Grin....I was just thinking it might mean something to him looking down from above with a big smile on his face.

He was The Railroad Man. Most all his music had the sound of a steam locomotive in the backgroundWink

PS   You remember. You posted Riding The Rails by Johnny when we were talking about this a while back.

I would like to suggest that Ulrich gets first right of refusal on opening the diner. A couple of reasons. First, it is tomorrow in his neck of the woods long before it is on this side of the pond. Second, he has a rich history of opening diners. He is the man of experience.

Since were were previously talking about TN and KY, I was looking forward to that.

Speaking of the Great Lakes area, that covers a lot of territory. Chicago itself has much to offer.

I'll extend an invitation for the diner to visit my hometown of Ludington, Michigan.

I like that idea!

Many activities and points of historical interest near here. And Wisconsin is a quick ferry ride away if we would want to sojourn to Milwaukee and visit Steven and the good folks at M-R.

Plus, it is near one of my favorite railroad cities in Michigan, Petoskey, a quaint little town just north of Luddington.

I'll extend an invitation for the diner to visit my hometown of Ludington, Michigan.  The September connection?  On September 6, 1952, the S.S. Badger was launched.  She would eventually become the last operating railroad ferry on Lake Michigan and today runs as a passenger vessel.  After Labor Day, most of the tourists are gone, making it even more enjoyable to be here.  We could all even take a field trip on the ship to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, which is only a couple hours drive from Milwaukee to check out Harley-Davidson.

Steve O .... "The City of New Orleans" is one of my favorite songs. ... It reminds me of what train travel was like before Amtrak. ....

A few weeks ago, we talked about going to Tennessee to honor Johnny Cash in September. ... I suggested we include Kentucky with Tennessee. The Everly Brothers were from Central City, KY. .... Both TN and KY have plenty of railroading to talk about. ... I still suggest TN and KY for September.

Maybe, we could look at old photos of MR's project layout, the Clinchfield Railroad, of many years ago. It was one of the more memorable project layouts. The real Clinchfiled operated in eastern KY, eastern TN, and farther south.

Southern RR's Rathole Divison in KY south of Cincinnati, OH was interesting.

Steve Goodman opened for Steve Martin back in 1978 or 1979; got to see him in San Antonio.  Great song.  One of the first songs I learned to play on my 12 string guitar; and my favorite.

Remember the tin can; the MKT's central Texas branch...

Also happened in September: Steve Goodman, composer of one of the greatest train songs ever written, "City of New Orleans," died Sept. 20, 1984.

In less than twenty-four hours the Chez Aleut Diner will be closed.

This begs the age-old question.

September... is it too early to go leaf-peeping in New Hampshire? Should we save that for October?

Hm, this Labor Day weekend is the 115th anniversary of Harley-Davidson. Who wants to pack up and visit Milwaukee?

What else happened in September? Let's see... in 1883, 135 years ago, President Chester A. Arthur presided at the opening of the first transcon to the Pacific Northwest, the Northern Pacific, at Gold Creek, Montana. We could go there. Probably nice and cool in the mountains.

Sept. 21, 1856, the Illinois Central became the longest railroad in the country at the time when it connected Cairo, Ill., with 700 miles of track.

Sept. 22, 1851, Erie superintendent Charles Minot became the first railroadman to issue a train order by telegraph, in what's now Harriman, N.Y.

Sept. 23, 1874, the East Broad Top begins operations.

Lots of locations to choose from...

Good morning.

Ulrich... Nice to see you....... Feel free to talk about model railroading instead of all the other stuff. .... I will not get tired of seeing pictures of your beautiful layout or old photos of your previous layouts. You are very talented.

Good Morning!

I am not lost - I am still around, just quitely sitting in the back booth, listeninge, observing.

There is not much I can contribute to the recent discussion on savings or war heroes, or on comedians of local fame. So it´s better to say nothing insteadd of something stupid.

Si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses!

Actually, I have been quite busy the last few days. I published a number of rather acidic comments on the current situation in my country. I won´t go into details here, only as much as there are shadows of 1933 around us, but this time colored in red.

Should you intend to visit Germany, I can only recommend to abstain from that idea. It is no longer a safe place.

Happy times!

I had to Google that. I honestly didn't know what it refered to.

Guess I don't follow too many Texas comedians who hate dumb people.
