Kevin, I know it's M10000, I just forgot the extra zero and didn't bother editing the post to have it.

There's a lot of beautiful stuff from the 20s-40s, architecture, automobiles, aircraft, trains, music, but I'm sorry the M100000 is... U-g-l-y!Laugh

Brent thanks for the advice I'll look into it.

Steven, if the job situation in Louisiana is not great, you need to get your butt up to Whistler B.C. They are 14000 workers short for the upcoming ski season. Good pay and long hours for a year will get you in good step financially.

Good advice to Steven, Brent.

When I attended Lincoln Electric welding school in the early 1980s, a good number of other students were either currently employed or hoping to get hired on to the Alaska Pipeline job. Big money, nowhere to spend it, although living expenses could be high, the smart ones sent the money home.

In railroad days these were the "boomers". Go where the jobs and the money are. Don't sit and wait for them to come to you.

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a Beer and Ulrich, Rick and Steven what they want.

Did not sleep worth a darn last night! Fell a sleep with the TV on. Woke up around 2:00 AM and watched two cold case shows before I could fall back to sleep. Had a good blood suger level when I woke up at 95. Ate a fair sizes low carb breakfest and I was all most done for the day. Did get some needed weed wacking done but both the battery and I where spent.

Black and Decker V 20 weed wacker. Cannot call it junk and for most yards it should be fine. But my backyard weed's laugh at it! I have to run it on high and the battery only lasted maybe 30 minutes.

Kevin Did you call Captial 1 and ask for the credit increase? If so, I may give it a try. My credit score is now 699 and would love to get to 701. A $500.00 increase would do the trick.

Ugly Engines Boy you folks and sure posted some! My favoriot Ugly Engine is the EMD BL-2

Make mine Monon,if BLI made them I would buy a few.

 Later Ken

.

Yes, but they told me I had to use a different process, but then the increase showed up all on its own.

One great feature of the BL-2 is that among early road switcher shells it had the most space to add extra weight. I am sure EMD did not take that into account when they designed it.

Actually, I like the styling of the BL2. I have seen Monon 32 at KY Ry Museum.

Ken ... I have been on the KRM train between New Haven, KY and Boston, KY.  Not with the BL2.  I think they always have the Santa Fe CF7 at one end. When I was on it , they had two former Air Force Baldwin switchers at one end.  .... Another time , we took grandkids with Thomas the Tank engine at one end , and the CF7 doing all of the work at the other end.

Brent.   .. Yes, that’s the place.  It was very nice. ... We were there in the summer, and we also visited Whistler. Whistler is  beautiful .  The trip home was on the Rocky Mountaineer to Calgary , and we flew home from there.

Credit cards.... Anyone with credit balances is STRONGLY urged to pay them off ASAP.  I would advise  not to ask for higher credit limits.

The componding effect of interest works for you if you save money and against you you you borrow money.  So, never borrow money for anything . .. Save your money and invest it wisely.

End of sermon.

I don´t have a credit card. When I had one, I only used it as a debit card, with the balance automatically paid of at the end of the month. I found out that I don´t need that and I don´t want someone to know, when, what and where I bought my stuff. Now it´s cash only - it saves a lot of money.

It´s 2.25am on Aug, 19th here and my birthday. I can´t sleep - just too much thinking to do.

Happy times!

.

I cannot live without credit cards. I travel a tremendous amount of the time, and for rental cars, hotels, cruises, restaurants, etc... credit cards are the only way to go.

.

Also, I have set up ALL my bills on auto-pay from from credit card. Electric, Cable, Water, Cell Phone, Storage Locker, Everything. That way I never miss a bill payment, and all I need to do is make sure the credit card is payed online by the 22nd every month.

.

This convenience makes my life possible. I could not be out there walking around with $4,000.00 cash on me.

.

However, if you have $4,000.00 in credit card debt and are not making at least 5X the minimum payment, you have a big problem on your hands.

I use my two credit cards extensively, but I don't pay any interest. I pay my full balance every month. If you can't do that, then stop using your credit cards!

Well back to Ulrich's Birthday.

I just see Ulrich up here in Alaska on his birthday. Yep I see him fellowshipping with us all.

We are all here socializing with him too, Alaskan wilderness.... Yep we are all inside eating prime rib,  king crab and munching on Birthday cake.

Meanwhile when we all stepped outside for some Alaskan-fresh-air.  Ulrich stepped out on a second-story balcony watching out for any possible sudden mishaps.

Well I don't know.  I was the first one that noticed when he yelled from that second story balcony.    LOOK OUT  LOOK OUT.  Polar Bear!!!   We all got our asses back inside before the polar bear ate one of us.....  Back inside to Ulrich's birthday party where it was safe once again.

Its all good here in Alaska.

Thanks Ulrich!       Happy Birthday

Yes, use credit cards for yourself, not for the bank.  Mine gives me a cash rebate every month.  I pay the full balance every month, so I don't pay interest.

I paid cash at my LHS before it closed.  That saves the merchant fee money.

Did someone say CAKE! OOOHHHHH that looks good Steven. Ulrich is sleeping but I'll slip thisHappy B-Day wish into his dreams.

Credit cards eh! Neither my wife or I have not paid a balance off completely at the end of the month ever in our lives. I went on a three month trip in the eighties and I figured out what I would probably spend and put a huge credit on the card as it was pre-internet and I had no way to pay the bill while I was away. In later years I just had my parents pay the bill when it came while I traveled. I would give them the money before I went.

We recently changed our cards to one where we pay a fee, but it includes travel insurance that was better than the annual policy we would buy separately and cheaper to boot. We put everything on our card and it gives us airfare and a car rental in Hawaii every year for the four of us. A good deal.

We are in and out of the country so much buying a travel policy each time was silly so we got an annual one.

You guys south of the border, does your health insurance cover you out of country as well? Our Government only covers a small amount out of the country, so you need additional if you travel.

All our bills are autopay as well, including the monthly property tax bill, autopay the best invention ever.

I gave the kids credit cards three years ago and that made life so much easier. They were traveling with their school to competitions across the continent and I always wanted them to be able to get home or have access to funds in an emergency. My Daughter was 13 and my son was 15, if they needed school supplies or went to the Dentist on their own, they just paid the bill and they didn't need us around. I can honestly say neither one of them has ever used it for anything they weren't supposed to.

We have a line of credit that has a 3% interest rate. We rarely use it, we needed a new car in a hurry for the kid and used it for that, but it was paid off completely within ten days after I sold some stock to pay the bill.

I can't imagine spending money I didn't have. Optional expenses day to day are pretty obvious at the time. Those daily Starbucks coffees have sunk many a people financially.

I have a $750.00 credit at PWRS. I have no problems not spending it, I will likely use it for one of my Royal Hudsons, however, I may get one of the BLI Pacifics when they come out. I like to get something new at the start of train season. I got five engines within two years when I got back into the hobby and that got me started. I hold myself to one a year now.

Track Fiddler I had a friend that would not travel outside of Canada or the U.S. His mother had put some pretty bad misconceptions in his mind about the rest of the world. I convinced him to join me on a last minute hop to Europe once, I think we went to Seville, it was a long time and many trips ago. We got there and he soon found out that there are a lot of places in the world that are more modern, safer and miles ahead of North America in all respects. We were about twenty-something at the time, he now takes his family all over the world and makes sure his kids really know and not fear what the world is like.

We think of nothing of hopping on a plane and going somewhere. Just look at reports on safety, healthcare, transportation and a whole list of other things. We have Foreign Affairs Canada and the U.S. State Department is the same advising about travel.

Good cake. Night all.

Back again, after a couple of hours of sleep!

Thank you all for your birthday wishes! Gee, I wish we all could have a celebration somewhere in Alaska´s vast wilderness - but at a place which is rail-served!

This is the second time in my marriage Petra won´t have a self-made birthday cake for me. First time was 12 years ago as we traveled to Wales to visist those lovely narrow gauge railways there. This year we decided it´s no fun to eat birthday cake for four days in a row, so Petra bought a little cake which we will be enjoying. It´s not going to be like the home-made one, though.

A happy day to all!

Happy times!

Ulrich.  Happy Birthday! Cake Do you like German chocolate cake? That might be appropriate.

Kudos to those who do not have credit card debt ..... Actually, I use two credit cards . One bills at first of month, and I use it for first half of month.  The other bills in middle of month, and I use it for second half of month. Each has a payment due date about two weeks after bill date. ... I paid in full.  ... This way , each purchase has about 4 to 6 weeks from date of purchase to pay for it.  I pay no interest .

Do you like German chocolate cake?

You´ll have a hard time to find here what you call a German chocolate cake  There are dozens of different chocolate cakes around, and I have not yet found out which one has the honor to be a German chocolate cake Big Smile

We will enjoy this one instead:

It´s a little hard to place 62 candles on it, so just 1 will have to do!

Happy Birthday, Mister Ulrich!

Hobby Front: Got the new hopper car this morning. It appears to be an older Accurail car. It had the truck pins and press fit coupler covers. I ended up having to remove both the pins and the coupler covers. The reason being was that while it did have Kadee #5s, somewhere along the line the coupler pins were removed. In the process, I drilled out the pins replacing them with 2-56 screws and reglued the covers down. I used a pair of 148s that I had onhand. After the glue dries overnight, I will get the ACI label and the COTS panel installed and then the car will be ready to go.

Cash is King

That's true if someone is paying you.  But not necessarily true if you are buying something.  I recently read about several very wealthy individuals who paid for everything with cash.  Then they went to get a loan, I believe to purchase a house, and were denied everywhere.

The problem was that they were ghosts, so far as the credit rating organizations were concerned.  Because they always used cash they never established any credit, and because they had no credit they didn't have a credit score.  So no credit score, no credit.

That's true if someone is paying you.  But not necessarily true if you are buying something.

Back in October last year a 64 year old Cleveland man was held at Customs and his $58,000 was taken from him even though he claimed the money on customs forms. He was going to Europe to make repairs on his parent's home and did not trust the banks there to make a wire transfer.

He wasn't charged with any crime and he had to sue to get his money back which cost him legal fees and it still took more than half a year before he got "most" of his money back.

For everything else... there's Master Card.

Is there still time to submit another "Ugly Railcar" contender?

 Fiat_z by Edmund, on Flickr

I don't know, though. The more I look at it the more I'm becoming enamored with it. So homely I want to adopt it. It is a Fiat, afterall. There's actually one of these in the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.

Cheers, Ed

Morning diners,

US medical insurance varies from state to state and who you are, how much you make, ect...

My parents had pretty good insurance for years, then the 2016 flood happened, the hotel business boomed, and so came over $20,000 in bonuses, and the hotel owners ran these bonuses through payroll, so now for the past 1.5 years they've had much lower insurance.

My mom needs back surgery, but insurance wants her to get 3 spinal shots before they consider surgery, and the cost about 1000 bucks each. So I doubt they'd be very useful in another country!Laugh

Anyways, it's Ulrichs birthday bonanza so let's party!Happy B-Day
