Well; IMHO the good enoughers/close enough modelers still out number the prototype modelers from my observations locally and so far on most forums.
Thankfully I am bless with a club that still believes model railroading is a hobby and club membership should be and must be enjoyable by all members. In short you and your older models would be most welcome.I find this to be the case with several of the clubs I visit except for one.
Contrary to popular belief brass track still works as does plastic wheels on freight cars as well as DC for power. One does not need any starter books,DCC or high dollar locomotives and cars to enjoy the hobby..After all any kid can tell you that when he/she is able to setup a loop of track on the floor and run his/her train.
All to sadly your LHS owner was more interested in selling you a bill of goods that just happen to include high dollar items.Shame on him! [:(!]
Sadly to many modelers over complicates the hobby or believes their way is the only way to model or their way is the only way you should do things..
With 53 years in the hobby I say bull snot! Our hobby is as simple as one wishes to make it or as overly complicated as one wishes to make it.The choice is yours.
Remember this..Have FUN in what you allow and to blazes with those that don't like your style of modeling after all you only need to please yourself.
