BN Executive Scheme for SD70 MAC
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 13, 2002 2:45 AM
Hello,

Does anyone know if a manufacturer out there makes a BN (not BNSF) executive schemed SD70 MAC, and that the locomotive is DCC ready or compatible? Or, can anyone tell me where I can find complete color drawings of the paint scheme so that I can purchase an undecorated DCC compatible SD70 MAC and paint it in the BN executive scheme? Athearn makes a caboose in the scheme, but no diesel locomotive.

Thanks in advance.

I saw an Overland brass model in HO (BN exec scheme) about a year ago at a shop in Seattle. (North End Trains I believe). They look very very sharp, cost about $330 though! There is a book called "Modern Diesel Locomotives" from Hans Halberstadt/MBI Publishing Company that is available at a lot of bookstores for $17.00. I have it and it has quite a few real nice photos of the SD70 in the exec scheme along with some history and engine stats. I know that one of the acrylic paint companies make the correct paints also. Good luck, Pete

Thanks Pete!

I will look for the book, rather than pay the $330 for the locomotive. I just wanted a few SD70 MACs in the BN executive scheme for my coal unit train.

Wolv33, I'm a big BN fan too! I forgot about this link! Put it into your browser and click away on the pics! Better get a new color cartridge in your printer! Happy picture hunting! Pete

I forgot to add, 9400 was the first exec scheme SD70MAC, scroll down to there. It was also the ONLY one to have it's handrails left unpainted stainless steel.

Wolv33,
I am in the same boat...trying to get an BN SD70MAC. I am in N-Scale though and I need several of these so the $400 brass version is out. Athearn has supposedly been wavering on releasing one in HO but it's not looking too good in either scale to be honest. You can get a passively acceptable model by just using an SD60M and adding the HTCR truck sideframes. I have been considering this in N but the sideframes aren't readily available.

Nevertheless, if you don't already have them I would look into the following Diesel Era magazine back issues. They have excellent pics of the SD70MAC's with good detail shots.

March/April 1995 BN SD70MAC's
March/April 2000 BNSF SD70MAC's
July/August 2000 CSX SD70MAC's

Granted, nobody makes a plastic SD70MAC, but if you can live with the differences in detail between the SD70 and the SD70MAC, it's a simple matter to repaint Athearn's model in the Grinstein Green paint job. In fact, the banner ad just to the right of where I'm typing has BNSF or Santa Fe SD75Ms for sale, with 2 or more for $49.95 each. That's hard to beat. You could have a pair of SD75Ms painted in that scheme for less than retail of one SD75M.

Of course, if you're a stickler for detail and you just couldn't sleep at night knowing that your custom painted "SD70MACs" are really SD75Ms, then you might want to dig deep into your wallet and grab those brass models... you won't see SD70MACs in plastic anytime soon.

Now, here's a thought:

I just bought a case of SD75Ms to paint as BNSF 8270, the first SD75M to wear BNSF Premium Heritage paint (green and orange). This locomotive was just painted a few weeks ago and mine will be for sale on ebay in a few weeks. So, if this might be a better solution, look for these models toward the end of May on ebay.
