Coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please and thank you.

Have been enjoying some train vids on youtube at night, especially Australian steam. Other than that, nothing to report on train-wise. Mostly caring for senior horses and finishing up some exterior house projects.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed will have Crown Royal and I will have a Beer

Work Front Turned out to be some what a good day for a slow day. First thing I had a customer want to do a reslection. (did not like what she bought) Told me "this Gel Foam mattress is killing my back". My first thought was it was one of the Memory Foam Gel Foam Mattress that carry a good sizes Spiff $.Sigh If one gets returned for a lower spiff mattress I have to give back the spiff.

She gave me her ticket and I remembered her! Big Smile Came in the first time and told me she had a bad back but did not want to spend over $400.00 for a queen set? Point blank told her a $400.00 queen set will not help your back!

This time around she bought a good Memory Foam Mattress only for $1040.00 and think it will help her back problems. Plus I made a extra $115.00 in spiff! Yes

Ed I am with you about XP! One of the reason I have not bought a new computer, besides the lack of funds. Sticker says the Notebook came with Windows 7, did you upgrade, or did the notebook up grade it self? I have heard windows 7 is about the same as XP.

Laugh Finally figured out how to turn the notebook speakers on! Took a while to get the Help Panel turned off on the right side of documents I am trying to use! Added a keyboard and did get a little work done on my resume.

Might and Strange B&O F7's. Few night ago I reported the F7b sound started working. Then it stopped making sound after I shut down the layout and restarted it the next day. Went 2 days with out sound, then tonight, it is making sound again? Whistling Sound or no sound, I love the B&O F7's!  Besides, with the CB&Q F7's sounding great who cares!

 Ken, loving B&O again!

Good Afternoon!

Brunhilda, it´s coffee & cake time in Germany, so I´d like to go for a big slice of apple strudel and lots of Coffee, please.

It´s an overcast, dull day and I am not up to much. My back is hurting quite a bit. I think I must have pulled a muscle when I lifted the new washing machine on top of the dryer with the help of my friend Lothar. Those machines are sure heavy beasts.

In terms of MRRing, I am in the doldrums. I wish I were able to do something, other than making plans for small layout which will never get build. Even that does not work at the moment - I seem to have run dry of ideas.

I think I will hide in the corner booth for a while and wait who´ll be dropping by.

Good morning.  I've got my cold back.  It jumped right to the hacking cough stage.

Ulrich, why did you put the washer on top?  They are, as you pointed out, much heavier than dryers, and when full of water they will weigh a lot more and need a solid base.  I would have put the dryer on top, if possible, but maybe the connections won't let you do that.

Ken, I still use Windows XP, and I have no problems with it.  I play Flight Simulator on this machine, and after XP, Microsoft removed the hooks for Gameport devices like my flight yoke and pedals.  If I "upgraded" to a newer OS, I would lose capabilities.  Thanks, Microsoft.  Now, however, I find that the latest Turbo Tax won't run on XP.  Bah.  No wonder we hate these people.

The dryer used to sit on top of the washer, but the new washer is not deep enough for that. So I had to put it the other way around, as we do not have the room to have them side by side. The dryer is quite sturdy - I can stand on it. The washer is less than half of my weight, so that should work.

Afternoon folks........

Chloe, I just need a tall glass of ice cold lemonade, please.

Seems Spring has arrived a bit early here in the Finger Lakes.  Yessiree!  Currently 54°F outside under nice sunny skies.  High will be about 56°F today, and if this keeps up I will need to mow the lawn by next week.... 21st. of January and 56°F.  Hmmmmmmmmmmm?????

I am just about ready to get in the Volt and head over to an elctronics recycling event being put on by the County.  I'll be getting rid of the old MacBook, 3 printers, an old stand alone CDR unit I used as a backup for live recording way back when, an old Zip Drive, and a bunch of wires and small items.

Ulrich, watch the washer when it spins!  Things could get real, uh, interersting, real fast.......

Have a great day out there.  I may go out and sit in the sun for a while later this afternoon with my shirt off.  Good for my psoriasis.

I did, Ray and everything is fine! The washer spins with 1400rpm and it does not move at all, even when the drum is not completely filled.

I used to go to the electronics recycling day at work before I retired.  The last time, though, they would not take old CRT monitors or TVs.  I didn't have any, but I noticed that they would not even take them.  How can we recycle old electrionics when the recycling centers won't take them?  Our town, at least, will pick up any large items free of charge, but special arrangement is necessary.  Of course, then it's going to the incinerator like everything else, so it's not being recycled.

When I ask about recycling other electronics like VCR players and such, they say "Trash 'em."  A lot is said about how we need to recycle, but in practice it can be next to impossible to actuall do it.

Yep!  Frustrating to say the least...

The eWaste day here was paid for by the county from the $$$$ they get from Casella from the landfill we just happen to have here....  They hired EWASTE (Business located in Victor, NY) to accept electronic items for the countywide recyling day.  They only took electronic waste connected with any kind of computer and/or periferals.  So, they did accept VCRs, Digital Video recorders, DVR recorders and players, Digital converter boxes, Satellite recievers, video game consoles, and handheld devices, etc.  They did take all kinds of computers and monitors, including old TV's.  The biggest reason for them to do this came from constantly hearing from many, many people in the county about the difficulty of disposing of these things properly!  The County Supervisor (from Geneva) is most vocal about it was the top local guy in a recyling business here in Geneva a while back.  Unfortunately the home company (from England) decided to just not pay their employees.....  It closed quite suddenly.

Staples will recycle without cost, many of the items if dropped off at their stores.  I was going to take most of what I disposed of today one by one to the store for them to deal with...

The event was very well organized and had no waiting once I got there.  They unloaded the car and took care of everything...

I have been doing some Boy Scout contacting stuff that I have been putting off for a few weeks today also.  Just isn't enough hours in the day for me to be retired.  I did spnd about a half hour doing a touch of scenery stuff that has to be done a little at a time.  Will get back to that soon.

Have a good one!

We have friends, the wife is from Switzerland and the husband is from So Africa.  Europe had the front loading high efficiency washers long before we did.  They are not happy with their US, washer and most people I know aren't.  They take longer and clothes don't seem to get as clean.

A head cold hit me last night and I haven't accomplished anything today.  The weather is the same as you saw at the inaguration yesterday, cold and damp.

Looked at an oil tank kit I have.  It's a pair of tanks, and the bottom supports have a semicircle profile to fit the top, except they don't fit, a slightly smaller radius than the tank.  I threw away the kit label, but there are no locating pins or grooves anywhere.  Everything needs to glued together with precision and your naked eye.  I did cut some cardboard spacers so the bottom supports will be glued on the same spot on both tanks.

Fortunately Simcoe County where I live is very proactive when it comes to recycling just about everything. There used to be some restrictions on what could be taken to the transfer sites (the term 'dump' doesn't really apply anymore), but now I don't know of anything that they will not accept, short of radioactive waste etc.! There are no limits on what types of electronic waste they will accept. They are even set up to accept hazardous waste on a daily basis. They don't charge for the disposal of either electronic or hazardous waste. Heck, they even put in a second set of weigh scales to reduce the time spent lining up to get weighed for the stuff you do have to pay for. I think the reason that we have full service is that the County has chosen to retain ownership and operation of the waste handling. Curbside waste collection has been contracted out but the County still controls everything from that point on.

Boy it was a pretty day, we hit 75 degrees! I turned on the A/C on at work it was that warm.

Sure did not help the Work Front! Whistling Only had 3 customers and had a whole $40.00 in sales. Sigh One lady spent a hour and a half telling me "All the mattress feel the same to me, why do I need a new one"? I was so glad that she finally left!

Mr B Sure what I did not want to hear about Turbo Tax. I was sitting here a hour ago thinking about doing my own taxes this year. With my low income I can get my taxes done free by the state. But, this year there is no places close by. Guess I can try getting on line with the Notebook with Windows 10?

Inch Good to see you post.

My sort of new Amana Washing machine and Dyer. Far as the washer, it sure gets things clean! Seems pretty fast as well. Only downside is it sounds like it beating the stuff with a baseball bat! Sue and I both love the dryer!

Mighty B&O F7's. Second day in the row the B unit has sound. Yes I think. Whistling They are on address 3 after a reset, would love to put them on the program track and change there address and sound level. At this point I am afraid to mess with either engine.

Never Mind, the Might Strange B&O F7b just lost sound! Bang Head See things are back to normal on the layout.

Hi Crew,      ATT: Br. Otte

Just a HC. before heading to bed, please Zoe.

I just have a question this evening.  Maybe some of the Diners might answer it for me and if not, I would invite Br. Steven Otte to chime in here.

I may have indeed missed the question and answer on this if it was in here once before as I don't get the opportunity to check daily.

The question is>>>>>

I know that Model Railroader makes no mistakes. So why do I find the date of Feb. 2016 on the front of my Feb. 2017 issue of M.R.   That would be far to early for an April fools joke. Just find it hard to believe that Steven, Cody or Neil would have missed that.  So there must be a reason ???????

Yeah... well there is a lot to be said for just trashing them. Sure they got bad stuff in them, but most trash dump facilities can handle it. Those places as do recycle send the stuff to India where low paid schlubs get to breathe in the posions.

I have a large box filled with old motherboards, and I do not know what to do with them either. I ccould send them to the land-fill, or I could wait for an electronic recycling day to appear and send them to India.

BTW: I just bought a bing can of hard candys, the kind you see at Christmas time. On the lable it says they were made in India. It tasted like that is where they put their poisons, and send them back to us.

Good Afternoon, Folks.

Another drab day, but I pulled my act together and ventured up the stairs into our room in the attic - in search of goodies! And I found them - a large box filled with Kato Unitrack leftover from my little mini-modular Japanese style layout I built in 2011. It is actually quite a lot - sufficient for a very basic layout. Not that I am going to build it, but it could mean a start into something of a completely different direction. The nice thing about Kato Unitrack is that wiring is really a simple affair, and so is track laying - which suits me fine with my fading eyes and clumsy hands. I also remember that getting rid of the plastic look is also a doable task.

Since I discovered that box, which has survived 5 years in the attic without an issue, I keep getting the idea of a small N scale layout situated somewhere in the arid region of the US. When I close my eyes, I can already see a trio of yellow UP Diesels pulling a long string of intermodals....

While I am sure this will remain a dream, it perked me up a little - at least for today!

Ray and Mr. B. - we have a recycling place which accepts any kind of electric or electronic device - for free. They are open 3 days a week and people line up to bring their recycable waste to the place. You can also bring your garden waste. It´s really a nice service.

Janie, I´ll be staying here at the RC to have a chat with Bro Elias. Make my order coffee and cherry crumble pie, please!

Edit: I see I got tops - so, dear Janie, whatever those chowhounds showing up today will be having, put it on my tab!

2nd edit: Remember MR´sw 2010 project layout "The Salt Lake Route"? That´s what I have in mind ...

Hey diners,

Ulrich- I remember the MR 2010 Salt Lake Route layout. I thought of making it too.

I just realized this morning while walking the dogs. Since my NYC collecting for the 1960s is half completed. I couldn't really build a layout. (I talked about Charles being the crazy one.) He hasn't calmed down or behaved, making it a challenge. I really can't take trains out around him. He doesn't believe in personal space. I haven't stopped getting materials to build it.

Good Morning,

Another dull, foggy day here but at least it is still very warm( 33F!).

Inch, glad to hear your infection is on the mend. Not a good thing to get after surgery.

I had called my Doc's office on Friday with a question but had to leave a message. A couple of hours later the phone rang and it was the Doctor himself returning my call. He gave me the results of the pathology on my surgery and it was very good news. While the tumor had perforated the prostate, it hadn't spread at all. Talk about dodging a bullet. If it weren't for those PSA tests, I likely would have had only 5 or so years left on this earth. While it isn't a perfect test, it did the job for me so I do encourage all of you especially if you are over 50, to get a test as part of your annual physical.

Just another week to go before I can drive again. The car really needs a wash too.

We haven't seen the backyard rabbit for a couple of days now so perhaps it got out of the yard or the Great Horned Owl got it.  I heard it hooting nearby a couple of nights ago. While they are a large bird I saw a show on TV about them that showed how they can manouver through trees by folding in their wings. It was really amazing. I had thought one couldn't get anything in our yard due to the tree branches and shrubs but it turns out I was wrong.

Beach Bill, I too wanted to say 'Hats Off' to you for your work as a police officer. My grandfather joined the Winnipeg Police in 1914 and was with them for 20 years before he joined the CNR police. In Canada railway police were and likely still are the only private armed force.  My mother actually had a copy of the ad he responded to to get the job in 1914. One of the requirements was that you had to be at least 6' tall.  He was 6'2" and just over 200lbs.  Most of the officers you see now aren't very big at all so no wonder they have to resort to tazers, etc. Back then the average height was only about 5'8" so the police force had size for intimidation. He worked on a farm as a young man so he was incredibly strong too.  Interesting too that he was an American citizen when he joined the force as he was born and raised in the Chicago area.

Well enough of my babling,  time to do a few laps.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed and I will have the usual please.

Far from the worse day I have ever had, but I will be glad when it is over. Sigh

Work sucked Rail Spikes. Goosh awful weekend with only $290.00 in sales? Bang Head Up till the 16th of this month things where looking great with $15,000 in sales.

Might Strange B&O F7's! Fired up the layout befor work, B&O F7b had sound again? (did not move the engines, just powered up the layout) Tonight, no sound? Opened the B unit and only thing I found with the speakers that did no seem right is the front speaker was not held down tight and could move. Fixed that and use decoder pro to change it address from 3 too 233. Read all the CV's that was in the factory default setting's, then rewote them in the roster settings. Did the same with the A unit.

While I was not suprised the B unit sound was not working again. What really made me confused was the A unit would not run on the 233 or 3 address? Grumpy If it where not for the CB&Q's and my Steam Engines I would say all QSI decoders belong in the Ash Pit!

 Later, Ken

My head cold turned out to be a mild case of the flu, complete with headache, chills, coughing aches and pains.  The good news is it seems to be leaving quickly.

We live about 200 yards from  the river and from there, a light house is visible about 5 miles away.  It must be foggy because they have the fog horn going.  We have heard it often but tonight it sounds twice as loud as usual.  There is no wind to account for the acoustics.

I watched parts of the Green Bay game, seemed to be a blow out everytime I tuned in.  As an old Baltimoron, I have no interest in either Pittsburg or New England so I am not watching.  I'm waiting for Daytona.

In reference to the fog horn, I recall being told of a Civil War battle that could be seen but not heard by approaching troops.  I googled unsuccessfully for that but did encounter the original meaning of Basket Case.  It was not someone who was mentally unhinged.

in WW 1 it was someone who had both arms and both legs amuputated and was carried around in a basket.  The Army denied there were any such cases, both in WW1 and WW2.

I knew a surgeon who took care of such a patient in Vietnam.  At the end of surgery, the OR team was horrified at what they had done.  It bothered him for years until he encountered that same patient in Walter Reed Hospital.  The man was extemely grateful that his life had been saved.  That is also a triumph of the human spirit.

Good evening diners!! Flo, I'll have a big ol' mug of hot cocoa and boston cream to put me to sleep with a smile on my face. Big day tomorrow for me at a new shop, woohoo!!

Big Daddy, I hear ya 'bout Daytona. I assume your talking about the 500?? I used to be a huge NASCAR fan, not so much anymore. I'll watch the 500 and that's about it. The drivers are all spoiled brats that don't work on their own cars anymore and I am tired of hearing about all the "engineering" that's needed to make a car turn left. Brutal, made for TV and the fair weather fan.

Dispatch called tonight and said they recieved a letter from the NKP asking to use the HVBL for some thru freight express work. I am sure we will find a way to accommodate the NKP. Work is finally complete on that SD-40 from the CN. Next up should be some "pm" service work on our RDG GP-7's this week. Also on tap are some lighting upgrades on the HVBL. We'll keep busy for the rest of the month, for sure.

Good night all,

Rich

Good morning all.

Flo - I will take a cream filled donut, and a coffee, with milk and sugar please, in a back corner booth. Yes Flo, it's one of "those days" today.... Seems a head cold is bugging the asthma...

Also, what's up with Vinnie, He is working counter today? Oh, someone is out with a cold.... Well, it is going around... I think I got it from someone else, between a cow**ker and family being ill, I didn't stand a chance!

Weather - Probably not helping either... We hit 65 yesterday, down to 39 last night, high of 40 today, and rainy. Snowstorm forcasted for later in the week. Maybe we will sell the last of our snow throwers!

Big Daddy & SS Express - Yes, I was also disappointed in both ball games yesterday, not watching much of either one, as neither game was even close! I have now decided, for at least the Super Bowl, to root for Atlanta, as I dislike NE more.... Here's hoping Daytona is good this year! I used to be a very big NASCAR fan, but some of the changes they have made have turned me off to it, and most of the races are now broadcast on cable channels only, which I do not get, as it is not offered where I live, nor will I pay for satellite tv, as it is way over priced. So, other than Daytona, and a select few at the beginning and end of the year, I do not get to see them. I used to always catch Daytona, Talledega, Bristol, Martinsville, Darlington, Brickyard 400, Pocono, and both Road courses, every year, but now, half of those races are on cable every year. And tickets are always tuff to get, and pricey. And NASCAR wonders why they are losing fans....

W**k - Had a good sales day on Saturday get wiped out yesterday, as we finished in the hole for the day yesterday due to a return from a idiot customer. When someone uses who they are to get their way, regardless of normal operating policy, it gets on my nerves very quickly! 'Nuff said there!

Trains - Got to catch a local on Thursday, in passing, being led by, to me, an old friend, an Alco 425 I had gotten a cab tour of quite some time ago. Pointed it out to family with me, so it made for an interesting (albeit quick) story.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the day!

Mornin' everyone!

Ah....... Hi Vinnie.  Zoe around?  Oh, she got the flu and is taking the day off.  I guess I will have the #2 Special...  Huh?  Oh!  That is a couple eggs, homefries, 3 strips of bacon or a sausage patty, and toast.  Make the eggs over easy, bacon, and a double order of the the sour dough toast.  No sour dough bread today?  Humph!  OK, make it a regular order of whole wheat toast then.....  Oh, I definately need a pot of Seneca Lake Dark Roast coffee to wash it down.  Got it?  Ok, thanks.   Wonder what he will actually bring me?

Ricky,  You mean one of these?

The LA&L only run Alcos.  Their old Century Units are their main power and it is great to see them run by the Museum at speed pulling a line of tanks cars filled with corn syrup (Going to the Cool Whip Plant).  SWEET!

Been a busy few days in the family here.  My oldest granddaughter was a reader in church yesterday.  She is the youngest kid to ever be a reader in the service (by a couple of years I think).  She asked the Pastor if she could do that, got trained by our "Actress in residence" an older lady that is well known in local theater, and did a fine job at 9 years old! She did the Call to Worship, and the opening Prayer.  DIL and both granddaughters marched in Seneca Falls on Saturday....  They are all shuffling schedules to help the family whose daughter is in the hospital (Rett Syndrome) with pneumonia and their old Beagle doggie has a badly infected tooth and has to wait until Thursday to have surgery...  Face is all swelled up and he is not a happy doggie.  They have him on major antibiotics and pain medication, but I hope he makes it to thursday.....  I will getting the granddaughters off the bus today and tomorrow.  Will be the ace on the hole when help is needed.

Today I need to get some MLK Materials over to the schools here in town.  Also hope to get some grocery shopping dome before the predicted (maybe, somewhat, but the weather people are not quite sure about as of last night) 5 to 10" of heavy wet white STUFF starts arriving in mid afternoon.  Started getting receipts and stuff sorted in preparation of doing my taxes last night.  Still have to wait on several form xyz's to arrive from variuos places to get it started.

Hope you have a good one out there.  Stay safe and warm! Ah...  Vinnie?  That is not what I ordered for breakfast...  I didn't order oatmeal!  Huh,  OK, I'll shut up and just be happy you have that in stock.  Why didn't you say the cook is out with the flu as well?  And, Dunkin Donuts Coffee in a styrophoam cup?  (Shakes head.....)

Yay Patriots!  Favored by 3 in the Superbowl, too.

I've got my cold back, too.  I took some over-the-counter meds yesterday.  Remind me not to do that when I have to drive.  I started watching the Patriots's game, laid down on the couch and I would have fallen asleep if the cough didn't keep me awake.  I went to bed and had to go online this morning to see who won.

Afternoon!

This may very well be one of my last posts for quite some time. The reason? My computer is letting me down. It keeps on crashing for no reason at all, as if somebody just pulls the plug. It´s an 8 year old TOSHIBA notebook my son gave me some time ago. It´s had it´s time apparently. Unfortunately, my piggy bank ist empty, after we had to buy the new washing machine. There is only small change left in it, not enough to buy a used computer, let alone a new one. I´ll be dropping by as long as I can start the dang thing over and over again, but I doubt I will have much of a service time left with it.

Will be seeing you!

Good Morning,

Since Vinnie is on duty today I'll just have some of that oatmeal he served Ray if it isn't too much trouble. Coffee from anywhere is fine.

Ray, loved that photo of the old Alco. I find Alcos strangely attractive so perhaps I am coming down with something or it is just chronic.

One problem with not being able to do much, is too much time to read the news on the internet.  Not good.  With the credit card problem my subscription to the Washington Post will terminate which is a good thing. I had planned on canceling it anyway. Normally I just read the Canadian papers, CBC and the BBC. That is quite enough.

Today I will work on our financial plan for 2017. I started it yesterday but need to consult my 'financial guy' before I can do much more. I must confess that I still like doing that sort of thing and miss that aspect of my working career. Perhaps a spreadsheet is in order.

This week my wife and I plan on starting the downloading of the photos we took in Africa in 2015 and 2016. There are many thousands of them so hopefully the computer has enough storage. I do have a seperate hard drive if necessary. I suppose it is strange to take so many photos and then take a year or more to look at them, but it is a big job and we had too many distractions this year what with my health issues.  My wife wants to go back again and so do I but it will have to wait a bit.

No sign of the rabbit. Sometimes I feel like Elmer Fudd as I am always looking out the window and hoping I don't see it.

Well coffee is beckoning.

last mountain & eastern hogger

I know that Model Railroader makes no mistakes. So why do I find the date of Feb. 2016 on the front of my Feb. 2017 issue of M.R.   That would be far to early for an April fools joke. Just find it hard to believe that Steven, Cody or Neil would have missed that.  So there must be a reason ???????

The reason for that is, stuff happens.

By the way, congratulations on being the first person ever to point out the error to us. Cake
