 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed will have a Crown Royal, Working Guy SS Rich will have a Boston Cream and I will have a Beer please.

Pretty Lack Luster Day At Work. Cannot say I was slow, nor busy. Most where "I need to think about it" customers.

Did hurt my left elbow at work helping a customer load a bedroom chest in his truck. Cannot say I am in pain, but I do feel some discomfort.

galaxy
I am also laying oput plans to raise the rasied beds on legs, using cedar wood for the boxes. That way maybe the critters {rabbits, squirells, chipmonks, Oh,, My!} won't get a tasty tidbit from my garden this year coming.

Good luck on that one Galaxy! Whistling Well if you make the raised bed 5 foot tall, that will keep the rabbits out!

I had more to say, but I am beat. I have been to the store 13 days in a row and it is taking a toll on me.

Morning All (just after midnight). Don't need anything this evening but thank you.

Hobby Front: Mentioned earlier that I had ordered pieces to try to replicate the cornice pieces on the OOP Walthers Modulars. The old saying of "When order the parts to replace an item, you find the original." has come true. I found some of that particular item. On a bid with the auction that closes Monday so we shall see.

Chat with ye all later.

How is your leg doing? Good I hope!

CAM BOOT is gone as of yesterday. I am walking about and am back to "full duty", (Dishes, Cleaning Lunch room). Can also try to get up to the train room.

Hello all

Train front - weather is frustrating my plans ! To much rain. Cannot access sites that have soil because they cannot get out and without making a tremendous mess on the highways with thE mud - The green folk - frown very heavily on that and if you get their streets muddy it usually involve police, Site inspectors and VDOT officials if you do . So for now, on hold, until things either freeze or dry out. Neither of which looks like its going to happen soon enough.

I may have figured out a way to post pictures through a link. Lets see what happens:

Lion - Glad you are on the mend not sure you are glad about KP duties ?

Ken - Hope your elbow is okay. That is an amazing amount of books ? What do you like to read ?

Galaxy  - Good luck with raised beds. It seems the vermints will get in no matter what one does short of standing over them with a shot gun

Johnboy - LOL Oh ! That is a good thing then shint side up. In my youth I had the shiny side down once ! Hydroplaned on water ( black, at night, couldnt see it ) and hit a bank, went air born, landed on the ceiling ! I wasnt hurt. The car didnt fair very well.

SSExpress - What do you clean with ? Do you have a usual method ?

CNCharlie - Well ???You left out the rest of the story. Did he give you a ticket ? What was wrong with the car that it was that far off ?

Henry - LOL - What did you tell him ?

Mr. B - Is that your RR in the photo ? Very nice !

v8 - What about hands free is that still allowed  ?

Dave - Geez - How fast were you going ? It must have been really fast or otherwise the police palne would have stalled and crashed.

Ulrich - Very relieved Petra is doing better. Why didnt they go ahead with the surgery ? Hey I did better than you ! I had  3 in 1 year. I had a souped up Ford PU with a sand bed and wide rear tires, Chrome reverse tires with baby moons .... And I was young. I would drive through town and get pulled over just to harras me !  On teh flip side. I had an uncle who visited family in Italy and they traveled around and they drove on the autobahn, - he got a ticket for going to slow !!!

GM - Intersting anyone model that caboose ?

Hon30critter - When the road is plowed and sanded is there stil a crust of snow and they do 60 on that ???

FRRYKid - Yes I understood that but still sounds like a recipe for wrecks to me.

Good Afternoon!

A grey day, but rather busy for me since Petra is back home. I had to refill our food stocks, cook a decent meal, do the laundry (in the new washer, which will remain a mystery to me how to use properly), clean the kitchen and take care of Petra, who is still weak. Fortunately, she sleeps quite a lot, which does her good!

Now I am exhausted and try to get a rest!

Why didnt they go ahead with the surgery ?

The docs say it´s much safer once she is free of any abdominal infection, just to play it safe and avoid any complications.

Whoever mentioned Vinnie of being one of the staff of the Diner - he is the proprietor and does not count as staff, does he?

Chloe, Zoe, Flo, Janie and Brunhilda - I guess that´s it, unless Vinnie intends to hire more staff should the patronage suddenly increase ...

Well, that´s all from me now - have a good one!

I thought Vinnie was a contract employee with "Steve's Protection Services."

The unpredicted inch or so of wet snow will melt off with the warmer weather over the weekend.  Can't say I'm sad to see it go.

Good Morning,

I'm all by myself this morning as my wife has gone with friends to pick up Robbie. They will meet up with the friends, who are looking after him, at a little village just south of the border. It will be great to have my little buddy back but I won't be able to play with him as he likes for a few weeks yet.

YGW, well the rest of the story is that no he didn't give me a ticket. I think he believed the shocked look on my face when he said I was speeding. The cause of the problem was likely the snow tires being of a bigger diameter and also I suspect the car had the wrong spedometer gearing. It was a '71 Vega that I bought new. My excuse is that it was a new model and no one knew what junk they were. When I traded it in it was 2 years old with 24k miles on it and it was starting to burn oil. I was lucky to get rid of it before it self-destructed. I bet that car didn't last another 2 years. The replacement was a '73 Nova coupe with a 350. Once I did a few small mods, that car really did have great acceleration but it sure was terrible on gas.

Hope everyone has a great day,

CN Charlie

I have a story very similar to yours. After returning from Viet Nam I was posted to Fort Knox. As I only had 6 months to do, the wife & I decided for her to remain in Pittsburgh & that we wouldn't get a car until I was home. Reporting in, I found my Company was in the middle of nowhere. Nothing was in walking distance. Phoned my wife back in Pittsburgh & told her to go to the local Olds dealer where we had purchased our previous car & order the same thing, which she did. When it came in, I went home on the weekend & drove it back. Crossing into Kentucky, I passed a State Trooper & he followed me for a couple of miles before lighting me up. Clocked at 15 mph over the limit. My speedometer was saying 5 mph over the limit. Gave me a ticket with the option of having the speedometer checked at a dealer withing 48 hours. If a mechanicle propblem was found & corrected, no ticket. Bad news was the Olds dealer in Elizabethtown told me to take a hike, to take it to the dealer where I bought it. Not knowing what to do, I went to the State Police Barracks & talked to a LT. on duty. He didn't think my speedometer would be that far off, but thought it might be a combination of both my car & the police car. Told me to have it checked when I got home & he would have the police car checks. Then he voided my ticket. WHEW, what a relief. Turns out my speedometer was 10 mph off due to the wrong gear being installed in the transmission. Can't say enough about the professional & courtesies shown to me by the Kentucky State Police.

Side note: When I went to register the car on Post, it turned out only my wifes name was on the title & registration. Something I never even considered when I took it to the MP Station. Bottom line, I had to call home & have the wife send me a note stating I was allowed to have the car. It being one thing after another, I never liked that car.

Mornin' all.   Flo, I'll take a mushroom & cheese omelette with extra cheese, please.

I'm now writing from a new "multi-function super task chair" courtesy of Office Depot and a Christmas gift card from my sister.  Some assembly required, and the city picked up the old chair yesterday.

Ulrich:   Hope things continue on the upswing for Petra.  That was getting pretty scary there and then the joy of snowstorms on doctor day was extra nasty.  Perhaps the schedule to get the surgery done will be able to be arranged soon.

LION:    Boot off?   So, out of the scooter-chair?   Did you yell "stand clear of the doors" or "doors closing" each time you took off on that thing?    The wildebeests will have to go back to stretching and keeping an eye open.

As to speed limits:   I worked a lot of crashes as a police officer and had the specialized crash investigation and then accident reconstruction classes from the Traffic Institute of Northwestern University.   Then when I became a police supervisor it became part of my job to go to the homes in the middle of the night and deliver the fatality notifications.   My observation from all of that would be:  The difference between a crash and an injury crash is speed.  The difference between and injury crash and a fatality crash is speed.    The traffic engineers set those limits for a reason.

Rain predicted for the beach for the weekend - I'm going to make a run to Barnes & Noble for books today.   That and one more USRA hopper car kit assembly should make for a good weekend, rain or no.

FRRYKid - Yes I understood that but still sounds like a recipe for wrecks to me.

We don't have many accidents with the big rigs. Most of the (too many) accidents that we do have are usually single vehicle (pickups/cars) with people not buckling up. It's rare accidents occur with semis as strange as it might sound.

Hello again !

Bill - I what is it like going to someones home and having to deliver that type of news ? How does it affect you ? Do you get used to it ?

CN Charlie - We ahve a saying round here that goes like this. "it will pass everything except a gas station" when discussing vehicles with big engines. I have a "94" ford with a manual 5 speed transmission . It comes std with TWO GAS tanks ! It came std with a 302 mustang engine. It will will haul a lot while draining the gas tank quickly !

Ulrich, Mr. B - What ??? I thought Vinnie was one of those Mafia guys !

Moelarrycurly - WHAT you are having tornados this time of year !? Geez !

Good Afternoon Diners,

Brunhilda, working the day shift today?  I'll have an extra large coffee with lots of cream, please.

Weather here has been unseasonably warm and I'm not complaining one bit!

YGW:  Why would the environmentalists complain of dirt on the road?  What is more natural than dirt?

Ulrich:  Glad to see you're able to take care of Petra and that she's recovering.  No doubt you're making an abundance of gastronomic delights.  Big SmileBig Smile  I myself am not too far beyond Mac n' cheese with hot dogs.

I started a thread asking the best way to put grabs on the side of my switchers.  I want to do it right and not mess it up.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Gotta run.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Afternoon Diners,

Steven Otte

So anyway... I've been trying to get a handle on exactly how many employees are on staff here at the Diner... In order of popularity I've seen Chloe, Zoe, Flo, Janie, and Brunhilda... but I think I'm missing one?

I made one but she works in dishwashing. Part-time going to school. Her name is Sarah. She was only mentioned at least three times during 2-4 years I think. Someone has to wash the dishes in the diner.

Weather is cloudy outside for the full day. Watching the adventures of Superman is quite interesting. It's better than watching the new ones. The same old super villains trying to kill him and everything.

If anyone remembers that bookshelf layout I talking about, I decided to make it an add-on to the future layout. It's going to look interesting with the main layout, added rail yard and industrial branch line. Needs more work in the design concept planning.

Well, customers don't interact much with dishwashers... still, I have to wonder, why are the servers all women? Why are there no Clovis, Zach, Floyd, James, and Bertram? You'd think there'd be at least one...

Well, it's like this...

When all the boys went "over there" during the Big One, the women-folk filled in at the Diner and did such a great job they never left.

Dave - Geez - How fast were you going ? It must have been really fast or otherwise the police palne would have stalled and crashed.

I was probably doing between 85 - 90 MPH (not kph). The plane was flying faster than I was driving, but not by much. The planes had to be able to track a car for at least 1/4 mile. That was the spacing between the road markers that they used to calculate the car's speed.

yougottawanta
Hon30critter - When the road is plowed and sanded is there stil a crust of snow and they do 60 on that ???

Yup! Should we be driving that fast? Probably not. Depends on the exact conditions of course, but if the temperature is cold enough the snow is not very slippery. Its not like dry pavement by any means. When it does get slippery is when the temperature is just below freezing. At that point the snow tends to turn into ice as it is compacted by the traffic. Intersections are the worst.

Dave

He offered to put his light on when he hit 60 and sure enough the spedomter said 50.

That was back when cops were far more willing to give you a pass (pardon the pun).

I don't do online banking as I just don't trust computer security.

Same here! I do use my credit card for online purchases and we have had a couple of incidents. Recently my wife got taken in on an offer for a "free trial" of some sort of non-prescription medicine. She should have twigged when the 'free' offer asked for her credit card number but her radar didn't go up. As soon as she put in her credit card number the screen told her "payment accepted". At no point did she see anything about pricing. Short story is that we ended up with a credit card bill of almost $800.00, and they intended to bill us another $400.00 each month for our monthly supply. Apparently you had to read the 'Terms and Conditions' to see the pricing, but what was really tricky was that the "I accept" button was selected automatically. Dianne has never done anything like that before and never will again. She was almost in tears. Fortunately the credit card company sided with us. Today we received a cheque for the full amount.

Some of you might ask why I paid the bill knowing that it was fraudulent. My reasoning was that we have a perfect credit rating and I chose to protect that and sort it out with the credit company afterwards.

I have a Chase Credit card.  I was checking it frequently online and found that someone bought a bunch of stuff in a Texas sporting good store.  I think someone took a pic of my CC in a restaurant and the expy date was illegible.  According to the credit card company they kept resubmitting the order until they hit the correct date.

I now get emails for all transactions over $75 or and all Internet transactions from Chase.

 Evening Diners

Flo, Ed will have all the Royal Crown he wants, SS Rich will have a BC and I will have a Beer please.

USPS Strikes Again! Surprise Whistling No wonder people poke fun at the post offices here in the states! Ed sent me the tracking number to the note book he sent. Tracking said I should have it today, but it was not sent to the Maryville Post Offices but to Glen Carbon IL? Yep, I don't in live Glen Carbon and Glen Carbon does not deliver to Maryville. Whistling

Made a few phone calls (more like hold time) and the package was in Glen Carbon. Had to go there anyway today (about 6 miles) so I stopped by and pick up the package.

Ed It seems just like I need! More storage than my current set up, dule core and more ram! Plus it seems to be Wi Fi ready, like I know how to do that. Whistling I started it up and seems Windows 10 will take some getting use to. Took a little time to figuer out how to turn it off! Laugh Only real question for now with out a CD drive, can programs be added like Word or Open Offices?

Did you by chance leave any photos of your layout on the note book? I would love to see more of your work!

Just poking my nose in the door to say HI!

Ken,

cudaken
Only real question for now with out a CD drive, can programs be added like Word or Open Offices?

I almost threw in a CD drive but the box was already getting stuffed!

All you need is a USB CD and/or DVD drive like this:

https://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-Portable-Rewriter-External/dp/B00C2AMK2M/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1484871389&sr=1-3&keywords=usb+cd+drive

There are even cheaper ones out there. I also got a USB add-on port so I had more than the (3?) that are on the laptop.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BWF5U0M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yes, Windows 10 takes some getting-used to! I really miss XP, that worked for me like a charm! You can't stop progress...

Glad it got there OK. Hope it works out OK for you. I did leave Microsoft Works program on there. It is a scaled-down "Office" but it does everything it's big brother does and will convert Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

I saw the tracking note, too! You must live in some sort of Post Office "Black-Hole"! Be glad it went to Glen Carbon and not Carbondale!

{edit} The same time I sent your package, Ken, I also sent a reel of film to Stratford, Ontario. The Postmaster said I should have used a different box to send something "overseas" I said it's just going to the other side of Lake Erie. All I got back was a quizzical stare...

Have Fun... Later

Henry - LOL ! Here ! Here ! agree with you !

UP831 - The theory is that it fills in the creeks and rivers. I think that thinking stupid. What do they think the heards of animals did when crossing the rivers and the plains or the heavy rains ?? That produced silt... Be that as it may I believe in being a good steward of the planet - just smart not stupid. I am also interested in being a good steward of my employers or my money too. I dont believe in wasting money on stupid wastful efforts.

Hon30critter - I am amazed any one would drive that fast on those conditions. I am sure you get comfortable with it. I just dont see me doing that.

Then when I became a police supervisor it became part of my job to go to the homes in the middle of the night and deliver the fatality notifications.

I don't envy that task for anyone. I'm sure you paid a price for having to perform that duty. I give you full credit for doing what you did. Unfortunately, Dianne and I have been on the receiving end of one of those visits, and indeed, speed was the cause. We lost our eldest son. I could tell by the expressions on the faces of the two OPP officers who had to deliver the message that they were not enjoying the task.

FWIW, I drive at the speed of traffic, albeit usually in the fast lane. However, when things start to get out of hand I move over. I don't tailgate, and I back off even further if I am being tailgated until I can change lanes safely. I use my signals religiously even when there are apparently no other cars around. I look before putting on my signal including checking my blind spots. I let the signal flash at least three times before starting the lane change and I move over slowly. (Yes, I count the flashes). I have had two accidents. In the first one I was cut off, and in the second I was rear ended. In neither case was I doing anything wrong nor could I have done anything to prevent them from happening. There, now that I have proven that I am a saint behind the wheelSmile, Wink & Grin I will shut up!

Good evening gents..........Flo, I'll have a large hi-octane and a jelly fill for the sweet tooth, please and thank you.

Ulrich....happy to hear the wife is doing better.

I recently did some detail work on the over abundance of empty hopper cars I have. I got a little bored with coal, so I tried using the red stuff to simulate ore. I used a couple of CN 2 bay cars when I started to wonder if the CN ever hauled ore in the first place? Any CN gurus can chime in now....thanks in advance. I was glad I used the ore because it looks pretty cool running out on the main.

I also caught a couple videos on U-tube speaking about the railroads of US Steel. Well, this grabbed my attention quickly when the vid stated that the union rr, bessimer & lake erie, and one other rr all belonged to US Steel. It got my wheels turning about possibly detailing up some empty gons I have with some steel or scrap and sending them out west? I assume this was all about the roads in the Pittsburgh area?

SSExpress - What do you clean with ? Do you have a usual method ?

YGW......I use anything that cleans dirt. LOL. Alcohol, soapy warm water, even tried some brakecleen from the auto shop. Also, compressed air does wonders on all that packed up cat hair. (don't ask) After a good cleaning I usually will re-grease the gears and shafts. So far I've had good results keeping it simple.

Dang....I still have that sweet tooth going on. Not a good sign for a diabetic. I hope to get some pics up in WPF soon. Peace out gents.............

We have to make an extended trip to NC this weekend; my daughter tore her ACL in her very first volleyball practice of the year last week.  Surgery is Tuesday.  We'll rent a cabin so we have a quiet place where she can recover in peace, and we can cook and care for her better than we could in her apartment or a hotel.  I'm hoping to take a few kits to work on; I should have lots of free time on my hands.

Remember the tin can; the MKT's central Texas branch...

Morning walk was at low tide, 07:30a, and about 60 degrees.   Decent.

HOn30  &  YGW:   Very nice of you to consider the emotional effects on police officers.  That was appreciated.     I loved my work, but 30 years was enough.  Most of the time now, if I dream about the police department I wake up and call that a nightmare.   It is a form of post-traumatic stress, I suppose.   While it may not be as intense as combat in the armed forces, there are scenes that most folks hardly ever see.   There is one little child abuse victim that still "visits" sometimes in a dream, and that was at least 35 years ago now.    That long daily walk on the beach helps.

The PO-lice observation about speedometers is that speedometers on American-made cars tend to measure faster than the actual speed.  If it registers higher, then the EPA gas-mileage figure is higher and it helps the vehicle (or brand) meet the federal mandates.   Speedometers on Japanese brands tend to be right on.   That is not a scientific measure but I've heard a lot of testimony on speeding cases with and without dynomometer results.  As they say:  Your Mileage May Vary.

Younger son is down in Florida for surgery today and Mrs. Beach Bill is down there with him serving as caregiver/driver/RN/Mom.    I'm without adult supervision, and plan to get to the RR workbench this afternoon.

Good Morning,

A cloudy day here but it is still very warm at 32F and is supposed to be like this for several more days.  Too bad I can't go out to enjoy it.

Well, happy day yesterday. My little buddy came home! He was glad to see me but still can't seem to understand why I can't get down on the floor to give him a tummy rub. The first thing he did after giving me a greeting was run to find his favourite toy, Zeba.  When he wants to play, I just have to say ZZZ and he knows I mean Zeba. He hasn't seen the rabbit in the back yard yet but will really enjoy giving that rabbit the fright of its life. Robbie is a terrier.  Not sure how it got in the yard as it is fully fenced and I try to plug any spots rabbits can get in. Getting it out will be interesting but will have to wait until I am more mobile.

Got another note today from the car dealer, wanting me to trade in mine and offering an extra grand if I do. I have been told they could sell mine in a day but they aren't getting it. Even if it is 7 years old it has very low mileage and I like it far too much to sell it, never mind the huge cost that would entail.

Not much on the agenda for today, but lately there never is other than walking around and around the house, reading, and watching TV. Another 2 weeks to go before I can get out in the car and then I will be very limited until I meet with the doc mid-Feb.
