Weird use of spikes

I used some spikes for capos when I was trying to learn banjo, but the players I knew said that they wouldn't because they sometimes fingered the 5th string and the spike would get them.
FJ&G: They used to say to use O gauge spikes for HO because they went right through the roadbed!
