Yes, I too thought this was going to be an announcement of an Atlas steam engine. I think Atlas made steamers at one time, way back when. Atlas announced a year or so ago that they were thinking about releasing a steam engine of some type, but I haven't heard any more about it. Maybe they decided that Broadway Limited, Athearn, Lionel, and others were too much competition for steam engines.

I'm quite sure if Atlas did a little research and produced an Engine that others haven't, they be a serious contender. From what I've seen of their Diesels and latest rolling stock they are definately up there in the ranks.

Aw poop. Another diesel (and a rather ugly one, at that, IMO). I was really hoping for some steamer no one had done yet. Like a USRA 4-6-2 or 2-10-2.

Athearn offers a USRA 4-6-2, as does Bowser.
Bachmann has announced a USRA 2-10-2 and Bowser offers one.

I sent the nice people at Atlas the following e-mail:

Hi!

Just thought you would be interested in what we are saying about you in MR Forums. Don't worry it's good things.

Here's the link:
http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?page=-1&TOPIC_ID=24465&REPLY_ID=238737#238737

Bottom line is "We want an Atlas Steam Engine!"

Regards
Fergus Francey

P.S. I got a set of your Hart Ballast cars and I couldn't believe how good they are! Well Done!!

You don't need anyone to test your equipment on their layout, do you?

Hopefully they will heed our cries

Fergie

Good thinkin', Fergie! Hopefully, they'll have a brainstorming session on Monday morning because of this. [:D]

If ATLAS ever decided to manufacture a steamer with the same attention to detail that they build their diesels and RTR's, I would think that they could definitely find a niche amongst LL, Athearn, Bachmann, and BLI.

[tap, tap, tap] "Hello?!?.....ATLAS, are you there?!?
PICK UP THE PHOOOOOOOOOONE!!!!!"

HODude, Minuteman,

Please forgive me if I'm wrong, but It seems obvious by your responses that you are taking "Digs" at the steam guys on here. I'm a diesel guy myself however, taking digs at other modeler railroader's preferences only brings up hostile feelings. So, be cool, [8D] and please encourage our fellow "steam" modelers. Remember, some of these same guys might be the ones to answer questions that you may have in the future!

This is just my opinion, but with BLI on the market and its popularity (in spite of a few problems with some of their locomotives) Atlas may be cautious about producing new steam models. We have to remember that producing model steamers are considerably more expensive than model diesel locomotives.

The best thing for steam fans to do is to continue to write to the manufacturers and urging them for the specific steam locomotives they want introduced. Another option is to hit BLI up.

Yes, BLI units are more expensive but many shops allow "Layaway Plans". I've read where some modelers state that "they don't need sound'. Well, the sound on any BLI can be turned off, but I seriously doubt these modelers would!

Cheers!

"I like my Pullman Standards & Budds in Stainless Steel flavors, thank you!"

Well Nightcrawler, I'm glad your wish was answered by Atlas! I am a SP Fan also, but that B23-7 is still too modern for me. I'm wishing for more CAB FORWARDS! There is never enough Cab Forwards!! As close too modern I'm waiting for is the SD45T-2 with the SP style Roman Lettering, which Athearn is about to release next year.

We need a state-of-the-art AC-12. Like the level of the BLI AC-4/5.

The Rivarossi version ain't cutting it.

I don't know how many of you have bought one of Atlas's new gold series engine's,I got the trainmaster a few weeks ago the qsi sound system is awsome, performance is exellent,so if Atlas would go back and reintroduce some of their classic's like the rs1's,maybe a couple out of alco's century series locos c-420/c628-2 I believe they would be the finest transition era diesels on the market. Now that sound has made it's way into our engines Thanks to BLI and Qsi ,I believe we will see a diesel with sound and some type of exhust smoke before the end of next year.I also think Atlas will be the one to produce them.

Railguyho,

Hope Atlas redoes the RS3's first. CNJ please!

Diesels with sound and smoke? Wow, can you imagine doing that with an Alco? Would have to disconnect the smoke detectors in the house!! But it would be way way cool.

Yes it would be way to cool realistic alco engine sound and some serious exhust smoke, need to knock a hole in the old train room wall,in my case just open the garage door wouldn't have to worry about the skeeters in the summer.

Well, I understand what most of the posters on this thread are feeling. I have been waiting and waiting for the B23-7 in HO. I am finally getting my wish. I sat by and waited while other diesels were announced before it...Although I was happy to see the U30C's!! Those on this forum that want a steam locomotive...I can sympathize with you. I waited 5 years for this B23-7. MoPac had 85 of them, and I plan on 8.

Not at all! I was actually digging at the endless parade of modern diesel's being produced and replicated, while some truly classic diesels are virtually ignored...
like the HH600 series.

I am a steam modeller as well...even built a 4-4-2 steamer from an MDC kit. Been a MRer
since age 6 and I'm 36 now.

Hehe sorry, let me clarify, I consider anything made after GP9's to be modern....
