If it has an X in it, it sucks! And yes, I just had my modeler's license renewed last week!

Model Railroader had an article in the October 2004 issue about installing DCC in all types of Athearn locomotives.

Good info from Jsalemi.

In addition, if you go the Digitrax route, then the Soundtraxx DSX series decoder would fit the bill for sound. Avoid the Soundtraxx "LC" series decoders. They're cheaper because the amplifier is smaller than that of the DSX and the old DSD decoders, so the sound won't be as dynamic.

10-4!

How much older? Is it one of the older types that has the piece of brass connecting the power wipers of the front and rear trucks? If so, Digitrax has two decoders with attachment and connectors made just for the older Athearn engines -- the DH163AT (high-end) and DH123AT. If memory serves, they just clip to and replace some of the connections in the loco, with no soldering required. You can download the manuals from the Digitrax website; they have pretty clear instructions on installation in there.

SD40-2 DCC decoder ???

I have a Athearn SD40-2 that I need to know what decoder will fit in it and if anyone knows is there enough room for a sound unit and speaker? this is an older engine not one of the Genisis series. I have never put one in so should I have someone else do it for me and pay them the first time or just wing it and hope for the best? thanks in advance you are all the best hands down.
