SD40-2 DCC decoder ???

How much older? Is it one of the older types that has the piece of brass connecting the power wipers of the front and rear trucks? If so, Digitrax has two decoders with attachment and connectors made just for the older Athearn engines -- the DH163AT (high-end) and DH123AT. If memory serves, they just clip to and replace some of the connections in the loco, with no soldering required. You can download the manuals from the Digitrax website; they have pretty clear instructions on installation in there. <br />
