I feel that to be an effective moderator one would have to have endured some years of jeers, insults and setbacks that are just apart of life, in fact growing up. In my early years, I've been insulted by experts so now-a-days amateurs don't matter, water off a Bears back

I been stomp, thrown and bruise by "experts" over my opinions and views-mostly by pm..I had one guy to follow me from forum to forum disputing everything I said..He finally disappeared from all forums.

As a moderator I been cuss out by pm because I did my job, yelled at because I'm to easy on offenders.I been out voted because I didn't agree a topic needed locked.

A moderator job isn't the easiest thing to do since you get to see the ugly side and some times your worst headache comes from your follow moderators...A tough skin is a must.

Kyle I must concur with Bear. Please continue contributing to the forum and share your journey into this great hobby with us. It would be totally inappropriate to allow someone of your age to enter the "18+ rating" world of a Moderator. As a parent of a very mature 14 year old myself, I would be more than upset if a magazine let my son do that job. Leave it to all us old Geezers to look after for the time being. Your time will come soon enough.
Besides you need 5 Red Stars to qualify anyway. Smile, Wink & Grin

Kyle,

Thank for the answering our questions.

I admire your Moxie (very old expression denoting one with excessive courage) to want to be a moderator on this (or any other) forum.

All I can add is..........  "be careful what you ask for, you just might get it"

Gidday Kyle, I really should just silently concur with mobilman44, but here's my Bear in a China Shop approach.I feel that to be an effective moderator one would have to have endured some years of jeers, insults and setbacks that are just apart of life, in fact growing up. I'd much rather that you continue to offer the forum your  current youthful enthusiastic contributions, than become a jaded, bitter cynic before your time, there's enough of us already here. Wink

Cheers, the Bear.

I was just asking about how many email accounts because some members mentioned some people would just come back on after being banned.  Call me lazy, I would just heed the warning instead of going through all the work of creating a new email, signing up on the forums and going through moderation again.

Now to answer your questions

I am 14, but I "go" to a mostly online school so I am at home except for Thursdays.  I can check the forums in between lessons.

I live in Hawaii, the little dot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

I have just started, but I am quickly learning, I hope to have my first layout started by next year, I am still planning, but I have an general idea in my head.

I can be on the forums from 8-11, except Thursdays.

I think Kyle said he lived in Hawaii. That would be a good thing. He could be cleaning up the daily mess after the rest of us have gone off to bed. After all, while we're allZzz he has just finished watching Hawaii five-O.Laugh

But then again, just think of how much we could get away with before he woke up.Smile, Wink & Grin

Hey Kyle,

You ask a lot of questions but seem to be short of answers............

I would not want a  moderator who avoided direct questions.   See my previous posting, and a few others for examples.

Why would you have that many email addresses, you an take out as many as you want, but seriously, how hard is it to check all of them, and "maintain" them.

Photobucket accounts. Back when I opened them each one required a unique email address. So a dozen PB accounts = a dozen email addresses. I check some of the email accounts once a week. Family members and a few friends use the others.

Don't you need an email address to sign up?  I am a subscriber so I did go through the forum registration.  How many email addresses do people have?

I have over a dozen. You can take out as many email addresses as you want.

Gidday Kyle, I have two which ain't bad for a technological luddite!!! One from my ISP and one from Google Chrome. I only use my ISP email address cos otherwise I'd only confuse myself. Confused I can only presume that if I was so inclined I could easily set up other addresses as well.

Cheers, the Bear. Smile

can just ignore any "colorful" projectiles the first or second time.  As a moderator, on the second or third time I could see how a few days of not being able to post or PM would change their attitude.

Or you could release a firestorm my young Jedi.As Yoda would say much to learn you have, yes, yes.

You can change IP addys in a few seconds and come roaring back just as fast as you are banned-as a moderator I've seen this and have seen that happen on this and the old Atlas forum. Some members may have several memberships under different monikers and ip addys.

Its hard to ignore being called everything in the book and that too.

If accepted be sure to use Armor All before you open your daily private messages especially if you are to hard cased or too relaxed.

Forum to Kyle...............

How old are you?  (It matters..... are you in school, middle of a career, retired, disabled, ???)

What part of the country do you reside?

How long have you been a model railroader?

What kind of time will you have each day to dedicate to moderator duties?

The above is important, along with your ability to be an effective moderator.

ENJOY  !

Steven Otte could start a thread and discuss qualifications, duties and responsibilities of the moderator as well as limitations and restrictions

And there are many restrictions and limitations in what you can and can not do as a  moderator especially on a corporate forum such as this since the members are also customers.

I can just ignore any "colorful" projectiles the first or second time.  As a moderator, on the second or third time I could see how a few days of not being able to post or PM would change their attitude.  Try it again and we will see about a few months.  A nice respectful message disagreeing is acceptable (as long as it isn't a ton of messages), you get mean about and say things that shouldn't be said ever, then we have a problem.

I will let things slide, just give people warnings, but if you start to cross the line then your post will be moderated.  You really have to do something bad to get banned, but it will be temporary.  If you are banned forever, you did something really really bad, that caused big problems (or repeated breaking rules).

I don't ever recall a potential moderator lobbying for the position publicly on the forum.

If he were so inclined, Steven Otte could start a thread and discuss qualifications, duties and responsibilities of the moderator as well as limitations and restrictions.  But, I don't see that happening.

Just a thought. Has Steve Otte even ask for volunteers? Maybe he thinks there are enough already or would prefer to let Volunteer Mod's go the way of the Dodo seeing as how we are all playing nice at the moment.

He said "we are short on moderators at the moment." Which is why the post are taking awhile to be moderated.

Kyle, I admire your youthful enthusiasm and wanting to take up the role as Moderator. Of course you don't have to answer if you don't want to, but I am just wondering what your ripe old age is.

I hear the penned projectiles propelled towards a Moderator can be quite colourful at times. I wonder if you are at a point in your life where they would just bounce off.
