Post Moderation
Posted by Kyle on Saturday, November 2, 2013 9:49 PM
I have posted several things recently, like one on the "Show me something... November 2013", my post hasn't be approved, but someone else posted, and theirs is already up, what is the problem? This is annoying because I to save the topic, I post another request, but since it takes so long someone else already posted, not knowing I posted, and now when my post finally shows up, my request is going to be ignored because it will behind the other persons post.

My post took probably twelve hours to be moderated, and during that time many other post that where submitted after my post appeared before mine, all of the topics I posted in where on the second page when my post were finally approved (except those that other members posted in after me). Something was defintaly wrong with the system.

Kyle,

I don't know why,you would still be moderated, after 78 posts. Maybe a call to Kalmbach, cust. serv. is in order.

I agree with Frank.

After 78 posts, you shouldn't be moderated.

Frank is still being moderated after 2200 posts, but that is a whole different story.   Laugh

Send a PM to Steven Otte and ask what is going on.  Steven is the Forum Administrator, so he would know.

The brunt of the moderator work was born by Jeff and Barry. Jeff resigned a few months ago and Barry is missing - so who is volunteering to become a moderator?

A few months ago I found my posts needed approval from the moderator to be included. It was explained to me that since my post count was showing 0 posts instead of the 1,300  that I had they needed to approve them first. There was a site problem with the post count that was corrected in a few days. After approval my posts would be inserted in the correct slot that it would have been in if they didn't need approval. It sometimes took 6 to 8 hours.

Well, that would explain why a few RAs have gone unaddressed - i.e. redundant posts.

I've been wondering about this as well. I would post much more if it weren't for this issue.

I came on here for benevolent reasons not to cause trouble...which by the way I am well capable of.

I do at times look to fellow modelers in the pursuit of answers and others times hope to offer to someone

else answers to their questions...that's my hope. I think that's what we're all here for.

This all feels way too much like censorship. For that I can go back to watching TV or go to work.

Unless something has changed recently in regards to the forum policy, only the initial 5 posts are moderated for newcomers.  Once each post is physically "okayed" by a moderator, it's then posted on the forum - hence, the delay.  After ~5 posts a new forum member (in "good standing") is normally taken off moderation and can post freely - with no delays in his or her postings.  The only reason a forum member is placed back on moderation is for disciplinary purposes...and that usually for a predetermined amount of time.

The initial moderation policy has proved to be a very effective method of deterrent against the Saturday night "drive-by shootings" we used to experience here from a certain repeatedly-banned ex-member of the forum.  Before that went into effect, folks could freely sign up and immediately start posting on the forum.  For those signing up using pseudonyms with "nefarious purposes in mind", it made for some very late nights on the forum for the moderating crew.

I'll say!!

Our hosts eventually agreed with some of us who suggested they really needed volunteer moderators from the Great Unwashed.  They were being beset with all sorts of problems, and the internet kingpin at the time, Bergie (remember him?), pursued it with his bosses because he couldn't control the problems himself; he was too busy.

It took a bit more persuasion to get our hosts to allow us to ban people on our own authority.  It was a pretty dramatic step, but it was the only way we could keep from having to stay up every Friday and Saturday night cleaning up filth left by the one or two cretins who kept re-registering with new user-names and polluting the front pages of each sub-forum.

Then, those privileges, which is what they really were, began to be taken back, and I believe Tom and I resigned within a few months of each other.  A part of it was fatigue, some of it was feeling that our hard work had not won the full trust of our hosts after all, and the large part of it was that we had actually managed to turn the forum into a peaceful set of exchanges where no bullying was going to be allowed...and trust us, there was a lot of bullying, including via PM exchanges.

That said, this forum could use a volunteer or two if the moderators have begun to get few in number.  It doesn't have to be moderator-for-life.  Even a six month stint would be appreciated by all of us.

Please, think about it.

No way, man! I am still in the process of recovering from my 2 year stint as a moderator. It´d keep me from getting started on THAT layout I have been planning on and off in the past months.

I will volunteer to become a moderator.  Currently I am trying to get some of my questions answered on the "track planning " topic, then I can start planning, but it probably will be a while before I actually start to build my layout, so now I spend a lot o f time on the forum, and I wouldn't mind the extra work.
