No Hockey = More Trains?
Posted by Fergmiester on Wednesday, September 22, 2004 5:48 PM
Well I know this will stir the pot for some, but I thought it a valid question. Remember Keep your sticks on the ice and play nice.

Personally I played for 16 years and I can think of a lot better things to do with my time then watch someone chase a piece of rubber and get paid big bucks.

I like the NHL, and I don't mind if my sons watch some during the winter. It's a beautiful *team* sport, still played by tough men with simple character ------ unlike athletes in the other 3 major sports. So, there will be less tv at my house this winter.

And I have to side with the league on this one.

There was a leauge for Pro Hockey? Man I need to get out of the train room more often.

All serousness though, I was unaware that the NHL broke up. What was the reason? Being so busy with school lately I havn't had much time for anything TV. I force my self to reserve Friday night for Star Trek and Stargate.

Personally I have never been interested in sports--the part of the brain normally devoted to sports in men is instead dedicated to trains and weird music!

Never was sports oriented. Couldn't care less what type of sport is on TV or any where for that matter. Now if you're talking about MR, or old cars, old radios, ect.,, you've got my attention!!!

Saw this more or less happen on a recent "Monster Garage" show! They added hirail wheels to a brand new hemi powered Dodge Magnum (what a waste!), as well as a "cow catcher" on the front (their description).

They took the creation to a touirst steam railway somewhere in California and held a drag race with a steam engine. As can be imagined, the Magnum pulled way out in front of the steamer, but its front railway wheels slipped off the track, and it was going along at an angle, dragging the ballast with it. The car stopped just before the finish line, and the steam engine coasted on to be the winner!

Wow, a show featuring three of my interests - cars, trains and drag racing!

And no, I don't care about hockey!

Of course, this poll was written by someone who is obviously not a true blue hockey fan. Hockey a TV sport? Come on!

Yes, I'll miss the TV games, but what I am going to dearly miss is going to NHL games this year.

However, it is only the NHL that is game-off. There's plenty of hockey to be had.

And heck, during the last disrupted season my dear NJ Devils won their first of three Stanley Cups!

And yes, not going to games will mean I am at my rr club more.

Come over here and I could argue that po0int for hours. there is no way in heck bullfighting is a sport. Who wants to watch a guy swing a red flag at a bull and then at the last minuet pull it awa. The person sould have to stand and let the bull gore him in the nuts for being so stupid in the first place. I'll give you the other 2 though, even though I dont really consider racing a sport eaither, because the car does all the work and u just stter and pu***he gas!! And your pit crew does all the hard work.

I myself have never been interested in sports. I live in a small Canadian prairie town where a good majority of people are obsessed with hockey, but I still don't care about it.

They didnt break up...the Owners have locked out the players, so they are effectly ON STRIKE! just like the Baseball debacle years ago only who knows if the NHL, already shaky, will survive...[V]

The NHL's front office started laying off employees; it looks like they're considering that the "lock-out" may continue for a while.

So, at least for a while, there'll be even more time available to check ebay for listings of discontinued rolling stock!

Well as a season ticket holder, I just received my letter from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, saying that the season was on hold indefinately. So, yes this will make a difference. Actually, I like to work in the train room while listening to the games when I don't go.( I share my tickets with 3 other people.)

If the season is a total loss, I figure that I will save about $500 in parking, programs, and food. Unfortunately, I broke a tooth today, so there goes over $800 for a crown. I can't win.[swg]

Well when I started this thread it was "Tongue-in-cheek". Unfortunately when I read about your plight and how people's livelyhoods are affected I cringe. Sad how a handfull of people can make life a misery for the masses.

Hopefully both sides can see past themselves and resolve this quickly.

No problem Fergie, I view this as a bit of financial relief, but you're right, there are a lot of people who are going to be in trouble because of this. My opinion is that the players are out of line here. While sports are a big business, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that this is simply entertainment. The players are important, but it isn't like they are doctors or scientists. They're athleats and entertainers, and should be paid accordingly.

I didn't mean to rain on your parade here, but maybe this brief reality check isn't such a bad thing. In spite of what happens in the real world, we always have our trains. PLAY ON!!![:)]

No problem Elliot. I look at both sides and shake my head. After all the owners are the ones who started this by "Buying Cups" and loading there rosters through big incentives. I shouldn't get into it as I'm not up on my facts. Oh well

I think you're right Ferg, the owners may have started all this, and it's hard to get the toothpaste back into the tube. It all boils down to one word, GREED. The problem in all sports started in baseball. The man we should point the finger at is George Steinbrenner. He is the original "team buyer". Everybody else is just a copy cat.

The players aren't without fault though. There is one event that started all of this, and that is the Curt Flood case. Curt Flood was a player for the St Louis Cardinals. He challenged baseball's "reserve clause", which basicly made players property of their teams. His Supreme Court victory opened the "flood gates" of free agency. However, this could also be blamed on the owners being cheap, and not sharing with the players.

We have spent the last 30 years watching the balance of power shift from the owners, to the players. Each year there is a new record salary being paid. Owners wanting to bring winners to their fans, and agents wanting their player's talents to sell to the highest bidder. If someone doesn't draw a line somewhere, it will never end!!! Hockey is the last holdout, and the players need to understand that it can't continue. The fans can't take it.

Its really ridiculous, they kept raising player salaries without really doing anything to raise revinues or market to new fans. Meanwhile tickets sales have been flat or declining in most venues. TV coverage is almost non-existant compared to baseball or basketball. Its no surprise NHL is on the ropes. I have a dread fear that the season will be cancelled and no one outside of core fans, namely sports bar patrons, etc. will even notice its missing. Better start increasing my Jersey collection, some of the teams might not be in existance next year...[:(]

Dam this has me Mad! Another of the FEW sports I like down in flames....[V]

This really doesn't give me any more time to work on my trains seeing as I'm a full time college student. But, I will miss the NHL action.
