We did go rail fanning today. The good news was that we caught 8 trains in 2 hours. The bad news was it rained pretty good the whole time. Taking any photos was just about impossible. On the other hand, not taking photos allowed me to pay more attention to the trains themselves. I know that sometimes I get so caught up in taking a photo of some car or engine that I miss something even better. A catch 22, so to speak.
Dinner tonight was a delmonico roast, garlic mashed potatos, green beans and dinner rolls. All washed down with a bottle of Cawtaba from Seneca Lake. For desert, I took a 30 minute nap.
Jerry - So very, very sorry for your loss.
Ray - Welcome home. But your not fooling me. I think the primary purpose of your trip was to see if you could figure out a way to tap into the electrical grid supplied by Niagara Falls to supplement the solar panels. By the way, do you need a passport to cross back and forth over the border. The wife has mentioned she would like to see the Falls again, and we both like the view from the Canadian side. So I'm wondering if we need to get passports befor making any plans.
I broke down yesterday and pre-ordered one of Intermountain's Norfolk Southern ES44AC Pennsylvania RR heritage units. I had told myself since they were first announced that I really didn't need one, but the more I looked at it, well, some of us know how that goes. No will power and not much sense either. But it is a beauty. They are due in June and I just hope they aren't delayed.
So all in all, another good weekend here, and hoping yours was too...

Had a great weekend up North of the Border in, I did. The Niagara Frontier Region, NMRA, as always, put on a fun filled weekend, with several great clinics to attend, loads of wonderful layouts on tour, lots of fantastic models and photos in competition, and a Hobo Breakfast to end the whole thing this morning. The Hobo Breakfast is for all those of us who have attended a convention outside of our own Division, but all the first timers are invited as well. Great feed, BTW, which led into the awards ceremony. I "officially" received my volunteer certificate at that time.
Got lost twice on the way home.... Only reason is wanted to avoid route 407 as it is a toll road and is very, very expensive. My GPS wanted to send me on that route, so I decided to just use the directions I printed out from Google maps and work backwards. i screwed them up in my mind and ended driving about 15 miles out of the way. Then i stopped, thought about it and told the GPS to just get me to Hamilton Ontario (From there I know how to get home) and avoid any toll roads. Had no problems with customs either way except for the hour wait to get over the border coming home. My own fault as I knew it was going to be a wait (I didn't think that long though) because I wanted to stop on Grand Island to take a break from driving so I came across in Lewiston. If I had gone South to Niagara Falls I could have got through much quicker.
I only bought a couple a couple decals for the car at the huge hobby shop in Mississauga, Credit Valley Railway Company. I'll put up photos when I have one (maybe both) installed on the PiP. The Pip got 55mpg on the trip, BTW. I had saved a couple miles of EV for driving around town and it came in handy waiting in line at customs so the ICE didn't have to keep starting up. The ICE started just after I left the customs booth...
The cats survived my being gone for the weekend quite well and there were no hairball piles around the house.... My son said he didn't see any and the pet sitter didn't leave me any reports of them either, so I guess all was well.
Spent some time catching up on the posts from the last couple days....

Went yard saling yesterday with SWMBO, I town in the west of the county had their annual community sale. Take up about 5 or so acres of the local VFD's grounds.. Not much train stuff but I did score 8 herpa/Con-cor semi trucks, new in the box, for 3 bucks each.
Might go to another huge sale like that next weekend,,,,hmmm,,this hanging out with the wife has it's perks!! Of course, then last afternoon/evening we were replanting the front garden, and spreading mulch til we ran out of mulch and daylight at the same time. still have an area about 6 x 12 that is bare. She wants wildflowers, I want something by LGB.
We still need more mulch, so while I hosted a Decoder install session for CSX_Road_Slug, she took my car and brought back 10 more bags of mulch BUT no flower seeds (maybe I'll get my way??) I did get he proto SD9 rewired and decodered, along with an Atlas S2 and S4. He also got a sneak peek of my latest project, hopefully coming to the pages of MR soon.

Mike B. (mbsewi), you have some nice photos of your layout, and all the more impressive after I saw the early pics of where you started. Great photography of your layout, as well. I was figuring the layout was two or three times the size that it actually is, from the areas you have further along. Oh, good idea to not get behind with Vinnie on any tabs; so long as you pay by the next day (or Monday, if it's a weekend), he won't (ahem...) "talk to ya...", but paying it off that day is even better.
Gary, the key thing (as JaBear pretty much covered it) is: do you enjoy whatever form of modeling (planes, trains, cars, whatever) you're tinkerin' around with. I don't know what scale your Blackbird is, but I had one (guess I might've bought it in the 1970's, but not for sure), and I think it was maybe in the last five years or so that I got it out of the box it had been in and decided that it deserved a rest - was pretty worn, and I think was missing some parts, too). I don't even recall whether I used flat or glossy paint, either.
And JaBear, I think I'd read that SR-71 slogan somewhere back up the road. The crazy thing with those Blackbirds was, by the time the other country realized one was overflying their area (and could scramble any interceptors/rockets and such), it was already gone and a couple of countries past their borders! (Much faster and hard to detect than the U-2, which relied on its high cruising altitude to not get shot down, and in the long run, the missiles were developed that could reach that high)
V8 Dennis, I'm surprised that the sandbox didn't get stuck under your feet there. But I won't get it back out by spilling any of my thoughts about California governmental officials...(but you might be able to guess...)

I haven't been doing much MRR stuff today. Tried gluing the last two wall parts on Billy's Place (see my post last night for pics), but I need a custom clamp or such, I think, for that to line up and stay put. Mostly piddlin' around with the internet - checking about possibly getting a used iPhone on deBay (but the prices on there are ridiculous, considering that I could buy a new iPhone 4S for $99 plus the monthly plan).
Just feelin' kinda lazy at the moment - may play a game on my iPad until supper time. I also want to run some stuff by my daughter's & SIL's, including a thumb drive with photos from grandson #1's 5th birthday party. But I'd better call first, and make sure they're at home.

Afternoon guys
Been working on my trains. Got quite a bit done, but hit a few snags and am taking a break (before I get angry).
Kato CB&Q SD40 875 (should be C&S): turns out I could just file the nose for a spot for the nose light. So I did that, drilled the hole for the rear mounted brake wheel and am painting the brake wheel stand and wheel. Also I plated over the factory ratchet break as the C&S ones had the brake wheel. I have quite a bit of paint to touch-up on the nose area. Once I figure out which fixture to mount in the nose. (Garry, what type of light fixture was used in the nose of the C&S SD40s? Mars, Pyle, etc.)
Athearn RTR ATSF SD40-2 5119 (was Ken's): I got a DH163 installed and fixed the rear cup for the driveshaft (pressed it together and heated it up. I hit a snag when the bulb for the beacon died. IDK how it died, I attached one of the wires for it to the tab for the factory headlights, (whichever one would be the blue wire) and soldered the other wire to the green wire. I did this in my RS3 and it works fine. It worked fine for a bit in the SD40-2, but then I went to turn after some testing and then it went real bright and died. I'll check voltage for that later. As usual, the bulb broke when trying to extract it. I drilled it out, then stuck a new bulb in. Worked, but now I had some light leaks for it. So I went to paint it, and then the bulb came out. Pushed it back in, and too my horror, it took some paint with it. So I soaked it in alcohol for an hour and some of it came off. I just can't scrub the inside.
Athearn RTR BN SD40-2 8097: I manged to get a beacon on in the right spot, and light it with a bulb. Everything was going great until I went to paint the bottom of the beacon black (so light didn't shine from the bottom). Apparently the hole was a little too big and the black paint got into the housing. Same story as the ATSF unit.
I may have some pipe cleaners for my airbrush left over I could try. Does anyone have any ideas to get the black paint out of the inside of the beacons?
Gary, You could say the SR71 is wet. I could check the one a couple of miles away when it rains (Air Force Armament Museum) but it's a unique SR71, the only one with an extended tail. If you do make a diplay of it on the ground, don't forget the oil/fuel all over the ground. The SR71 leaked like a sieve on the ground; but when it was at it's speed and altitude, the heat caused it's body panels to expand and it didn't leak.
Jim, The one that's still talking to me I met a few days ago. She actually approached me and told me I was "you're like, really hot. Wanna come over sometime?" I thought she was kinda cute, so I said "why not?'. The other one I met last year when I was walking my dogs. She liked playing with them, and I invited her over a few times. We don't talk much anymore. I still have 2 numbers from girls at work I haven't tried hanging out with yet.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
While rummaging through storage box we had never opened since we moved into this flat 4 years ago, I found a number of resin kits, which I had bought 10 years ago at a train show, for a layout project which never came into being.
Those are semi-flat background structures, made by a Dutch company. With the exception of the corner pub and tall building in the center, I have all the kits I need for the background!
The Dutch architecture is pretty close to the one in northwestern Germany - it takes only little to "germanize" them.
What a lucky find!
Looks like little loco Ulrich, I wish that DB steam and train cars weren't so expensive here. I want a 2-10-0 and some cars.

Currently 45 with an expected high of 85. Should be a real nice day outside, but I am sure we will have lots of people in the store anyway, which I do not understand.
Had a closing shift Friday, then an opening shift yesterday, which makes me really tired. Too bad too, because in yesterdays mail my Walthers order showed up. Four Digitrax UP-5 Panels, and a bottle each of PolyScale Depot Buff, and Depot Green. These are the colors I use for the railrods buildings, and I am going to paint the engine house. Was just too beat last night. I have an all day shift today, 10:00 to 6:00, so will probably be too tired to do any layout w**k after I get home.

Hey, where’s the Pabst? Oh, Mr B bought last night and it’s put away. No I don’t want one, waaaaaay too early. Just noticed it was gone that’s all.
Jim- I drink the pineapple juice first, then a couple swigs of coffee to clear the palate, a couple bites of rice, then the beef dish. Normally I wouldn’t have had the pineapple juice, but it was breakfast and….., I like pineapple juice.
V8 Dennis- My computer does the same thing if left on for a few days even with IE closed. I don’t leave it open, I use the favorites thing. My old XP did the same thing but not as bad and took much longer to start slowing down. Like a couple three weeks. This one, IE10, will do it in about 3 or 4 days to the point every time I open or close the browser window or tab the screen goes blank for a couple seconds then comes on again. XP never did that. Very annoying. I also have Chrome installed and it does the same thing. Actually, in the past I’ve also tried Firefox and as I use the internet, I notice neither being any better or worse than IE. But that’s me and what I do on the internet. So I just shut down and restart and all is well for a few days.
Mr B- I heard the same joke except instead of the railroad to Hawaii, it was world peace.

Well, don’t know what today will bring. No Chinese food as we had that yesterday. Nope, didn’t get Suki so Brenda was fine. She did wave hi from her area but didn't walk up to say anything, not much of a smile so I figured she was in a bit of a snit anyway. Saw her pointing and saying something to the other waitress and it wasn't happy stuff. I told Brenda looks like she could use a backrub, and when my fortune cookie said to be cordial,I figured .....hey, why not. Brenda didn't see it that way. Ahhhh to be ornery. We got Jenny I don’t speak English so Brenda was ok with that and she actually kinda likes her now. She has learned to answer only what she asks and they get along fine. Brenda did mention she was talking up a storm, she actually said more than "Thank you real much" as she collected the bill and the plates. She said to Brenda “enjoy your day and see you later.” Whoa! She must have been really Chatty Cathy mood.
Rained yesterday also so I didn’t get the yard mowed. I will today. Probably try to start the tractor again. I make this sound like it is so difficult to start when actually I have not really tried anything other than turn the key and let it crank for a bit. Hm…..maybe I shut the gas off last year…. Just kidding. It’s just been getting harder and harder to start over the last couple years and blows out blue when it fires, puffing some blue when it runs and hits a load, puffs when you load it with the mower (only at first ) then when you throttle up she’ll give a good chuff of blue. And, you have to fiddle with it throughout the year to keep it running good. Didn’t used to have to do that but hey, like I said it’s what, 35? 36? And never had a wrench put on it. Well, othern a tune up and the tweeking here in the last couple years. Might get a new one today, might decide to fiddle with the old Cub Cadet…..might not do either.
Buddy said last night his wife decided she wanted some cabinets in the new waitress station up to the retaurant so...jobs not done after all.

Good morning. It's 65° with 100% humidity and a small chance of rain. The high will be 80°.The plan for today if you can call it that is to clean up the layout some. When I can see where things are without having to hunt for them will be good enough. Other than that I'll watch some movies and maybe catch up on my sleep a bit.

I spent the morning finishing the drawing of that HOn30 layout. While the On30 version is certainly more appealing, the Ho version requires only a third of the material and thus only a third of the cost. I had more or less already shelved that plan, when I ran across the Minitrains website. They have a cute 0-4-0 tank loco of Austrian prototype, which would make a nice loco for that island railway.
Ain´t she sweet? Supposedly a good runner, too!
The plan is now finished. I have to admit I cheated a little by scaling down the view from the On30 layout.
Each "box" measures only about 10" by 18" - quite handy, should I move to Berlin in September...

I model in HO scale, my grandson's layout is in the same room, a 4' x 8', which is MTH "O" scale, so when he spends time with us, which is all of his summer school vacation, we get a chance to work on his trains. Winter time is when I work on my trains. My time period is the present, give or take a few years, as I'm a former WC stock holder, and a lot of my rolling stock reflects that. My railroad is like a "bridge" operation, and named the "Great Lakes Central", not to be confused with an existing prototype operation in Michigan with the same name. I've used the name since about 1982, which is before the current Michigan business began operation. My layout is a small "L" shaped "dog bone" style, with a yard and industry access via the yard and a "frontage" spur. My mainline is about 50' of continuous run, and the rest of the trackage, including yard, transloading area, and industry spur, is about another 50' total. I run freight and commuter trains, along with a few excursion / tourist "specials". My layout is powered by a DCC Digitrax Super Empire Builder, and for my DC favorites, not yet converted, I use an MRC 2400. The two are separated using Atlas control switches, and when I'm using DC, the DCC is not even pluged in, and visa-verse. No way do I try and run both, at the same time.. and no way can one power supply "bleed" into the other.
OK, now I know who Vinnie is, and trust me....I pay at time of service....no tabs..
