HO Baltimore and Ohio FT help

My dad recently got out his old Atlas HO trainset from the 60s. It's quite a nice set, it has 4 nice looking B and O passenger cars and a B and O EMD FT. The FT won't run. The lights light up, and I can hear a hum coming from the motor. I took the shell off and everything looks fine. I tried nudging it with my SD7 but that didn't make it move either. The motor is unlike anything I've ever seen, it's all in a little box on the end of the frame, doesn't look like a can motor to me. Any tips[?]

From your description, is sounds like this locomotive has a motor that is mounted on the truck and drives only one set of wheels. If you look at the sides of that "box" you mention, you should be able to see several gear shafts sticking out. Put a small amount of light oil on each of these parts on both sides of the box. Turn the locomotive upside down and look at the cover over the drive axles. If there is a hole in the center of the cover plate, inject some oil there, and then see if the locomotive can be made to run. If oiling doesn't help, more drastic disassembly of the entire gear box and motor may be necessary so it can be cleaned and oiled. Clean the wheels, too, even on the end that doesn't have the motor, because they probably pick up electricity from one of the rails.

Well, I don't see any gear shafts. I'll post a pic of it later.
