That's easy. Toss it and get another one or shoehorn another type motor into it's place. I've put Athearn motors into locos that just weren't built for an Athearn motor.

True. I doubt Walther's would have any in stock, and they'd probably want about 50-60 for one anyways... I've found out the following about replacing the motor:
1. A Kato motor will work with a modified mount and shortened shafts.
2. An Atlas motor is esentially the same as what P1K's motor is. But the shafts are a little bit longer, and atlas is out...
3.The micro-mark motor appears to match the P1K's dead on. All the dimensions are the same.

It's up to Ken what he wants to do because it's his engine. IMO, getting the micro-mark motor might be a better idea because IDK how well cutting the motor shafts on a kato would be.

Well my new (to me) Atlas FP7 hasn't come yet. The delivery estimate said between the 19th and 27th. With my luck it'll come on the 28th. Oh well, I have enough to keep me busy.

Good afternoon.

Sad news. I posted in recent days about friends of the family in Tennessee. They are a young couple who had a sick child with a large malignant brain tumor. In recent months she became blind because of the tumor. ..... She died this morning. She was only 17 months old.

Ulrich .... I'm sad, too to learn about your family problems. That said, I think you have been blessed with Petra to be with you through thick and thin.

Dennis B. ....... Are you speed reader by chance?

Galaxy .... I like the video of the Maui train ride. I suppose that was best.

The Keystone state......home of American railroading.......Pennsylvania.

I second Dennis' suggestion.  How about we set the diner on a siding near the Horseshoe Curve, and take some side trips to Steamtown, The B&O Museum, and so many other great RR Places in the state?

Oh Chloe can I get a cup of hot chocolate please...

Galaxy .... I'm enjoying the Hawaiian tour. Any ideas for March?

Hi garry, thanks!

I did my best to alert all to the history of Hawaii's trains, including the Honolulu modern today's version {too bad it is NOT mag-lev!!!}.

What was your favorite part???

Where would you like to see us go this next month? I went to Hawaii to get out out of cold and inspire warm thoughts.....

It is warming up all over the country so the chill of winter is going....going....gone next month as Easter is the 31st of March this year!!! That means spring is coming! {yes I know we can have snow after Easter}...

Ulrich .... Prayers for you and your family. Are you still doing this without your brother's help? I realize your sister has problems, and can not be expected to help. I think once your Mom and Dad are adjusted to the new surroundings there will be improvements.

Garry - no help from my brother. This guy is no good at all. He had the nerve to call my father at the hospital and started shouting at him. Apparently he does not like me helping my parents - maybe he is fearing that this could affect his future inheritance. He really upset my Dad. I expect a lot of trouble from him.

I am not sure whether my parents will settle in at the nursing home. While my Dad is perfectly aware of the situation, my Mom has lost any sense of reality. She still thinks Dad will come home one day. She does not want to move into the nursing home, she wants to stay in "her" home, even if it means being separated from my Dad. There is no way she can stay at home . She is not able to cope with even the slightest challenge of life. She told me she´d rather put an end to her life before she moves into the "prison". The day before yesterday I left her for a two minute "break" to "wash my hands", and she left the house. I found her with a rope around her neck - I don´t think I have to say more. All of this is so sad - I don´t know for how much longer I will be able to shoulder this burden. This is hell!

Jeff, hmm. That's weird... IDK what to do if the motor is as you say "esencially dead."

Ken, Upon some experimentation, I found out a motor from a Kato will fit very well into a P1K F3... The only modifications are to shorten the shafts a little bit and slightly enlarge the hole in the P1K's mounts to clear the bearing area on the Kato motor. The flywheels swap over easy. Same with the Stewart's Buehler motor... The only issue is I don't "really" have a spare one laying around. I do have the ones from my stewarts (both Buehlers and Katos) which are disassembled at the moment, but I will need them whenever I finish building the F-units of mine. I know where to get some for about $16 bucks, but I don't really have the funds at the moment (besides, I'd want to put in an order at the place anyways).

See: http://www.hogtrainz.com/KATOACCESSORIES.htm

Jeff, Any idea why a motor would act like it has a dead spot, but when inspected, all the wires are where they should be? I've cleaned it out with what I know, but there is still a bunch of crud inside it... Any ideas why it behaves that way and how to remove the crud? Another thing that really baffles me when running this motor by itself is it works fine on DC. But when hooked up to DCC and under address 00 it has momentary shorts, especially when changing directions...

You may not be seeing the fault because you literally CAN'T see it. I've had a couple of motors develop a dead pole yet when I inspected them they looked perfect. It wasn't until I unwound one to find out what happened that I came across a spot in the windings where the lacquer was burned off the wire. This had to be due to heat. That bare spot caused a short in the winding so that pole was essentially 'dead'.

Afternoon guys

Went to the train club since I finally got a saturday off for once... Finally got my grain train ironed out (see my "preventing stringling" thread) on the club layout. Turns out the culprit was the Walther's wheelsets axles rubbing on the coupler screw on my MDC cars... Branchline wheelsets work fine.

Ken, I got one working right using a circuit board from a P2K SD9... Although my test decoder fried when I tried the other one (with the potential dead spot), so I can't test to see if it has lights. What's weird it it shorts when using an 8-pin plug from an Atlas U-boat. But only under DCC on 00, but on DC it's fine. On DCC when I use an 8-pin to 9-pin harness with an athearn dummy plug it works fine... Maybe I should just hardwire them both an be one with it...

Ken: I know it sounds like we're being harsh on you but there's a good reason for it. We care about you.You gotta keep those sugar levels down and the beer drinking isn't helping. You don't want to be like me do you? I have neuropathy so bad I have to carefully watch everything I'm doing, every step I take. I never know if I'm gripping something tight enough to keep from dropping it or if I'm going to crush it in the next second. If I break a bone in either of my feet I MIGHT feel a little twinge, other than that nothing and all kinds of damage can result from it. I also have progressive nerve damage which effects my involuntary nervous system. That's the one that controls breathing, heart rate, all that good stuff. And as it's name indicates, it's progressing, getting worse. There's no telling when my end could come. It could be twenty years from now, it could quite literally be five minutes from now. And most of this is the result of diabetes. Some of it was caused by meningitis but the lions share is due to diabetes complications and not taking the proper care to prevent or minimize it.

A quick stop here to see my friends.

I am at home, but will be going back to my parents´ place tomorrow afternoon. The situation has not improved. My mother is demented to a degree, where she has lost any sense of reality. It is a shock for me to observe how quickly her dementia progresses.

Monday will be a very challenging day. I am supposed to take her to the nursing home, which she sees as a prison. She still thinks that she will only visit my Dad, but does not want to stay with him - after 62 years of marriage. My Dad is devastated by this. His well being very much relies on my Mom being with him, but I am afraid it will affect just the opposite.

Petra will be coming with me this time, as I need her support - not for my Mom and Dad, but for me. My nerves are shattered and I have lost over 20 lbs. in the last two weeks. The candle is burning low...

Jerry - I am so sorry to her about Sallie´s additional health issues. Angel for the two of you!

Ken - while a "high" reading of 146 is acceptable, if that´s your lowest reading you should quickly change a few things - just like Ray said. We want you around for much longer, buddy!

Blessings!

 Morning All,

Currently 34 with an expected high of 44, under mixed skies (whatever that means)

I have one load of laundry going right now, sheets and towels. I did get to install two Switch Tender motors last night and am about to tackle one more. Also did some filing up of the window and door openings on the engine house. Need to at least get the footprint down to lay the tracks for it.

    Prauers to all in need.

Jeffrey's number this morning was dangerously low and he took care of it quickly.  Much lower and Jeffrey might be laying on the floor of his trailer in the hopes that someone come along and find him quickly!

Lowest I've been and still conscious was 32 and still on my feet. I did have a lot of trouble remembering who and where I was.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar and a cup of dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug please.

It's a Barry kind of day here in the Finger lakes this morning.  Dull and gloomy....  Very dull and gloomy with a current temperature of 34°F and a high around 38° with rain and snow showers and thick dark clouds.  Did I mention it is dark and gloomy outside?

Ken, a low reading of 147?  Not very well controlled I would say.  The outside parameters for fasting blood sugar I have been told are 70 to 130.  Two hours after a meal it is 70 to 150 (I want to see it under 140 for myself).  At least those are the numbers my doctor and the nurse practitioner go by.  The higher numbers should be a once in a while sort of thing.  Jeffrey's number this morning was dangerously low and he took care of it quickly.  Much lower and Jeffrey might be laying on the floor of his trailer in the hopes that someone come along and find him quickly!

Stress can raise readings as has been said, but I would ask how much beer have you been drinking?  That stress to your body will keep your sugar high!  Ken, you aren't even close to being in the safe zone if your readings are that high and you are doing damage to your body big time.  Get off the beer, and get to the doctor for new meds!  Or, don't you want to keep that toe, or your leg, or your life?  If that sounds harsh, it was meant to be.  We like having you around and don't want to see you get really sick on us!

My sugar this morning was 90.  Right where I like it.  I have had one reading of 155 in the last month, and I know what I had for supper that night. SighSmile, Wink & Grin   Sometimes you gotta cheat a bit.  With that exception, my readings have been between 78 and 121 ever since I got off the Niacin 4 months ago!  I'm doing everything I can to be around to watch my beautiful granddaughters grow up.  I want to be there when they graduate from college!

OK, Rant over!  Hope to have some photos of progress on the SLOW tonight.

Catch you all later!

Morning All,

Sitting here drinking my first cup of coffee and looking through the forum.

Today I need to clear off the rolling stock on the layout in preparation for track cleaning (did I mention how much I hate cleaning track) which will probably be Thursday.

Tuesday I have to go into w**k early to have blood drawn for labs. My annual physical will be within the next 6 weeks.

Later I will be going to the club to pickup a billboard reefer that I ordered and give my spare ballasting tool to a friend. I will probably stay for supper but come home right after that since I w**k tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a good day and prayers for those in need.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and….I think I’ll have the chili as well please. And some flour tortillas too thank you.

Mostly sunny, with a high near 30. Looks like that last below freezing highs for at least a week.

Jerry- Prayers for Sally.

Not much went on except I didn’t get to play with my choo choo yesterday. Maybe today. Let’s hope. Have this hangover headache, but there’s a problem with that. I didn’t drink anything last night to cause a hangover. Only I can get a hangover without drinking alcohol.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning. It's 43° with 1`00% humidity. The high will be 65°.

Started off this morning with a blood sugar reading of 57. Not the best for sure. I had to get that up before I did anything else. So chili for breakfast! That's right. Chili. While it's low in sugar it's about 25 grams of fat and around 10 grams of protein. It brings my blood sugar up in a hurry, way faster than glucose tabs. I'm back up in a 'normal' range now and feeling much better.

Plans for today, clean up on the layout I guess. It was already a disaster area and working on the FP7 and GP40 didn't improve it any. Of course that's assuming I get a chance to do more than pick up a few items before the confounded phone rings!

Well now it's time to take my morning meds. Hope everyone has a better day than I've been having so far.

110 id diagnostic for diabetes. I understand they may or have moved that to 100.

Out of control over 200 is of major concern to your doctor, but he may consider 140-150 to be under control for an individual patient.

Before blood tests it was normal for a physician to taste your urine for sugar content. Sugar does not pour into the urine until about 160(?) [Lion has forgotten--clases were 30 years ago].

Diabetes Meletes (Mal = honey in Latin) meant pissing too much and it was sweet.

Diabetes Incipitus (Not Sweet) meant pissing too much and it was not sweet.

I'll go with performing blood tests, thank you.
