Howdy all.

Thought I might share this photo I took yesterday of my CSX GP40-2

Layout work will be slow for the next couple of months as most of my savings are going towards my 10 day holiday to Thailand in May.

Cheers.

Nice James. Thailand eh? T'was a pretty wild place in the 70s.

Rob - none of the stuff I had was lighted or at least they didn't function. I would figure out if you're getting more log cars and see if they all are too high or low. If the cars all vary I would fix all the cars. If the cars are mostly the same height, I would operate on the loco. Have you checked against a coupler height gauge?

I feel better about the actuator wires now. I got my trusty tried and true No Korode out and treated the music wire and coupling tube then wire brushed it all at the joint before cold fitting the parts together.I suspended the parts between a pair of solder iron rests I had laying around then dropped some more liquid flux on the joint and heated it all before touching some silver solder to the joint. The result is a nice strong joint. I got lucky and got the wire fed back through the place I had to rip it out of so tomorrow will see if it all is good.    Time to get some shut eye. Catch ya tomorrow with luck.  J.R.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf for me right at the moment.

Went out earlier to put out my trash for pick up tomorrow and was interested to see all kinds of animal footprints in the snow out there.  There is just about an inch of snow that has been there for a few days now and I could find deer, rabbit, squirrel, cat, and mouse runs.  That is one of the things I used to love about taking Scouts out Winter camping.  lots of signes of animal to identify if there is snow.  The deer has walked right across my main driveway to browse at my next door neighbors house too.

Spent a few minutes checking things down cellar so I did some clean up of the workbench so I can start another project soon.

Blackie seems to be tolerating his medicine well.  He has a good appetite and actually hobbled out to see me a couple times today.  I was sitting at the computer and felt a paw touch my leg.  Looked down and his little face is looking back at me with his "please pick me up and cuddle me" look.  I obliged him...  He was the most active this afternoon that I have seen him in a couple weeks, but he slept all morning on the couch and didn't do much more than change position a few times.  Hope the pills work and he won't lose any more mobility...

Just checking through the posts... About time to call it a night I guess.  Prayers for all in need.  See you tomorrow.

Good evening.

We just returned from Clarksville, TN along with about a dozen neighbors. Why did we go there? ... The answer was we went to eat Pizza! ... There is a place there with some world class, outstanding pizza. It's one of those places that brews its own beer, too.

The road to downtown Clarksville takes us next to Fort Campbell, home of the Sreaming Eagles; 101st Airborne. We thank out troops for their service!

Jake .... looks liek a great N scale layout. I hope you keep visiting the DIner.

Ulrich ...... Prayers for you and your family.

Jeff .... We're your friends if you need us as you mourn the loss of your Mom. ... It was good of you to share your layout with the little engineer!

Darren .... Good to see you. I'll have to look at your plan, and let you know if I have ideas.

Bama .... I have not seen you here much lately. You're probablyt busy with work and your young family. Your area has been on TV often in the past week. Glad the boy was rescued from his kidnapper. The man must have been very crazy.

Sue .... Where are you? We need an update on yours and Larry's layout!

Duke ..... Wake up! Vinnie says its time for your booth to be cleaned!

Rob .... You are asking about Con Cor and Bachmann passenger cars. Before getting tio that, what kind of train are you puttung together? What railroad and what era? What is the minimum radius on your layout where you will be operating teh cars?  I have passenger cars from those two brands as well as several other brands.

Ray .... I hope Blackie keeps improving! Our cat is much better after seeing the vet and taking medicine. I did not like putting the pills down her throat, and she did not lke it either.

Cheers, everybody!

Aloha again!!!

Heritage Railways Of Kauai:

There are two heritage railways in Kauai, the birthplace of Hawaiian railroading.

Railways were under construction in both Kauai and on Hawaii Island at about the same time in 1881

The Grove Farm Museum preserved original Steam Locomotives from the earliest days of rail transport in Kauai, restoring the small-gauge engines without much notice beyond the local community. The museum acquired property where historic right-of-ways had run, and found, in the thick vegetation, track beds ready for restoration, allowing the Museum to display their authentic, working locomotives.

http://grovefarm.org/hawaii-trains/

The second heritage railway in Kauai is the Kauai Plantation Railway at Kilohana. Unlike the Grove Farm Museum trains, which are brought out only once a month, the Kauai Plantation Railway is a daily fee-based attraction.

http://www.kauaiplantationrailway.com/rtt.htm

Kauai's first railway

In Kauai, the Kilauea Sugar Plantation purchased a steam locomotive from Germany and created 30-gauge tracks through the sugar cane fields. The first spike in this track was driven by Princess Liliʻuokalani, then Regent and soon to assume the throne as last Queen of theKingdom Of Hawaii. She had arrived the day before, disembarking at Hanalei a nearby port, and was invited to the September 24 ceremonial opening at the site of what is now the town of Kilauea. The assembled dignitaries included Governor Paul P. Kanoe and the Plantation Manager, Robert A. Macfie, Jr.This is often credited as Hawaii’s first railway.

While field railways ran on “literally little more than panels of snap-track laid and re-laid across the fields as the seasonal cutting progressed,” more permanent right-of-ways were soon established to provide freight and passenger service from mills to ports, where raw sugar was packed aboard ocean-going ships bound for California refineries. An engineer, sent to Kauai from Honolulu in 1898, took the train from Waimea, on the coast, to the Kilauea Plantation’s Kekaha mill, situated in the midst of the cane fields, and he described the trip:

"The railroad is a cute affair, only 30 inch gauge—cars mostly flat for hauling cane and sugar in bags….All cars are no more than 4 feet wide….Engines… are regular toys—they weigh about eight tons….[We] bowled over the four miles of toy railroad to the headquarters of the Plantation….They have engineer only—no fireman—no breakman. No breaks on cars"

It is 70 Degrees F and 21 Degrees C on Oahu right now at about half way past midnight HST.

Mahalo for reading this posting!

Have a great day!

Man, I absolutly HATED these types of problems, though my Trig class has been off of those things for a while now. In Physics, we are going over momentum and impulses, and in POD we are going over the origins of the Cold War.

Anyway, good morning.

Slept good. Feeling good. Have work so I will have a little more money in my pocket in a little bit. We have also had some snow squals recently and they don't seem to be accumulating to anything worth reporting.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and I’ll have those Pop Tarts this morning please. Thanks.

Partly sunny, with a high near 43. Looks like 40’s til at least Monday. Maybe even some rain coming our way. I hope so.

Tongue TiedWhat was yesterday? Pizza day? I had pizza last night too….

Jeff- In regards to missing your Mother, I know how you feel. And like someone said, the feeling never goes away, just the intensity.

Ray- I’m glad Blackie seems to be feeling better.

Welp, today is my “full day” of w**k. Don’t know what I’ll get involved in othernat. Looks like the water bill did go down thanks to new washer. Haven’t seen any real drop with power and gas bill even with new energy efficient appliances. Of course the furnace is the same but the dryer is gas..Hmm.. I reckon come AC time we’ll see if the new AC unit saves anything. But I was pleased to see the water bill did drop by about 5 bucksYes. Sooooo, I figure the washer and dryer should pay for themselves, and I should start seeing a savings in let’s seeeeee, assuming it stays at that rate, say 5 bucks a month... average of course….12 months a year…..let’s see carry the fooooouuuur,…… OH! Would yuh look at that!.....touch over 16½ years and woo hoo! I’ll be sittin in taaaall cotton!

Happy, happy, happy!

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning. It's 56° with 100% humidity and patchy fog. It'll be cloudy with a high of 72°.

Not sure what I'll be doing today. Depending on how I feel later I'll either do some work on the layout or go down and put the new tractor to work on it's first task, pulling the old Peerless tractor around to the back of the machine shop where it can be loaded for it's last ride, an all expense paid trip to Metal Mountain. Other than that I'll taking it easy today. The last week has been very busy for me and I've been pushing myself too hard and it's been having a telling effect on me. The relatives are headed back home today. I know my father will be happy about that. To him visiting relatives and old fish are pretty much the same. After a while they both begin to smell. No doubt he'll be very happy not to watch every step to make sure he won't be stepping on some toy. The last couple days getting across the great room has been like navigating a mine field.

Coffee in a UNDECORATED mug, please.

***Galaxy, neat island railroads and with some cool little locos.

***Garry, being a total freelancer, I go entirely with what strikes me. So with that in mind, it is steam era and it wil be Union Pacific and SP Daylight for passenger service. So far I have 3 Walthers R-T-R UP Cities series passenger cars I picked up on sale. Have not decided if I will fill out that UP train or simply mix those few cars into the Daylight train. Minimmum radius track on the old section of layout I believe is 18" and I'm going to work around that with the new layout, which I would like to keep around 28" radius for mainlines and only slightly tighter elswhere. I am not stuck on any particular brand, so all advice is welcome. So many brands to choose from!?!Confused (locos for passenger service will include a T1 and a GS4Stick out tongue)

***Ray, I still enjoy looking at critter tracks, but here on the farm it is usually in mud.

***J.R., have not checked coupler height yet. Will do next time I make it down into the train room.

Spent part of last night shivering under an electric blanket and coughing uncontrollably until Iit gave me a headache. Rough night. Really thinking it could be a tooth poisoning my system, so will make a dentist appointment and find out.

Have a good day all.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Buttermilk Pancakes with the pineapple syrup this morning and a cup of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug.  Please and thank you Ma'am.

The sky outside is a very strange color today.  Kind of blueish with a grayishness around the edges.  You can actually see shadows out there this morning....  Must go down cellar and watch the little wheel turn for a while I think!

Thanks for the good wishes for Blackie guys.  He has been out and about already this morning after getting his meds.  He and his brother Manét were sitting in a spot of sunlight here in the dining room area earlier grooming each other.

Ken, wait until you have retired.  You will never be able to get that much done in a day anymore! Whistling

Have a good one!

yeah, I finally figured it out it broke doiwn to 27 times three which was 3^3 then a cube rooted 3 both were under the radicant then split them up the 3^3 then loses it's 3 to the third. and the other 3 is stuck under the radicant because it can't be cubed. finally managed to ease the brakes off and am moving with haste through the HW before I take my test.

Morning guys

I've spent this morning so far masking and painting the middle end panel that I had previously taped up on those thrall gons. So I'm waiting on the paint to dry now. The only white I had on hand was rustoleum gloss white, and that stuff takes a while to dry. Later today I have a doctor's appointment, around that time I'll go looking for 3/16" masking tape at auto supply stores. Hopefully the paint will be dry by then, but if it's not I have off until Friday. Then I'll just mask off the part of the panel that needs to be white and paint it black.

James, that GP40-2 looks great. Maybe I should get at least one of the BN ones... The picture reminds me to get a particular SDP35 shell from Atlas (with a low-nose light) so that I can use part of it for an SDP40 and splice the nose light onto my Kato CB&Q SD40.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good Evening!

I am at my parents´ place.  Took my mom to see my dad, who is in an alarming condition. About an hour ago, my mom collapsed and has been taken to the next ICU. Unfortunately, this is not at the same place my father is - there are 50 miles in between. Tomorrow morning, I will go to see my mom, and then drive the opposite direction to see my dad. I will have to tell both, that they will not return into their house. Called my brother and asked him for help, but he refused again. Forum policy won´t allow me to post what I think of this.

I am completely exhausted and will try to get some sleep soon.

Belessings!

Ulrich: I know exactly what you think of it. My solution to it requires the use of a 2x4 board applied to the other party's head.

Well I decided I'd use the new tractor to move the old one to the back side of the machine shop. So I used a length of heavy electrical cable to hook them up back to back with the intention to pull the old one backward. I made sure the brake on the Peerless was off and the tranny was in neutral then then commenced to pulling it. The rear wheels of the old tractor skidded the whole way. The tranny was locked up! I got it to the other side of the machine shop but it was a fight. If I had tried that with the little MTD Yardman it would have just sat there spinning. It has the power but not the weight for that kind of work. Then I went to town to get some prescriptions refilled and get twenty pairs of new socks. I also picked up two cans of starting fluid for the van.

I hope you get better galaxy.

Well I suppose wasting two days of homework for this test was the worst idea I've ever had, none of the stuff on the test was stuff that I'd taken down in my notes nor was it easy. so with 30 minutes left on the timer I quit, there's no point in putting my blood pressure through the roof trying to solve something I didn't write in my notes. I knew I should've taken math after I had gotten every other class out of the way, serves me right another stupid decision that's lead me down the path of failure.

 Afternoon Fellow Dinners!

Flo, around on me and I will take a Beer in a frosted Monon Mug!

Well got all the running done and made it to the hospital on time.

Infected Toe Front, finally got some good news! Surprise Wound is slowly healing, ulcer has went from being 2 MM deep to 1.5 MM or is it CM? More than likely MM.

Train Front, looking forward to getting some new engines from Vince. Looking forward to getting the GP 20, never had one before and the SD 7, it will be used to get my ill fated Rio Grand SD 7 back on the rails. Cool

Ulrich if your bother is with in driving distances, personally I would go punch the Dick up side the head! Whisper Nobody heard that, right? When I moved from Carmel Ind to St Louis, no one (Sues Brother) would take  care of my Father In Law. So I brought him along. Luckily at that time I had a good job and could afford to offer the help.

 See you all later.

Hey Gang! Cowboy

I'm melting!! Big SmileSurpriseWink Some smartalek got the woodstove working overtime. Its 83.8 degrees down here!!  Flo, some Ice Cream please!

Not a whole lot going on here today. Finally got those mis-painted body shells stripped. After a 4 day soak in Scalecoat stripper/ELO/brake fluid mixture. Yeah, 2 month old Floquil is some nasty stuff. I did save and strain the mixture and kept it, in case I have to do more. Funny thing, I took a new Athearn shell and dropped it in the same bath. 20 minutes, no paint left! Big Smile

Tomorrow I hope to get the basecoat redone, then topcoat this weekend. Huh?  Tink goes back to the vet tomorrow morning, she's got blood in her urine again!Sigh Thank goodness the Vet is close. She whines something awful in the car!

Ulrich. 2x4 only hurts for a little while. You really want to get his attention? Who has power of attorney?Mischief

Hello everybody ....

Ulrich ...... Sorry to learn of the troubles with your brother. He should help with the situation pertaining to your parents. We'll gladly send Vinnie to straighten him out if that will help. Two years ago, my 2 sisters and I had no trouble working together to get our Mom re-located into a senior home, to take over her finances, and to handle other difficult matters. Now, I phone my Mom nearly every night, and I'm pleased to say she is very happy now.

Darren ... I did not look at the plan yet. Hopefully later this evening.

Ken .... Glad to hear there's an improvement with the wound.

Cheers, everybody!
