Good morning.

Not feeling to great this morning, but I finally have work tonight. First night in quite a while. I've been saving up for a train show that's going to be in Scranton in early March. Will be looking for mostly Postwar Lionel, but if any N scale locos or freight cars catch my eye, they could end up as a part of my N scale roster.

Modeling the Barclay, Towanda & Susquehanna in N scale during 1963. Steam still rides the rails, but is counting down the days (yes, the end of steam is literally just days away in the layouts timeframe). The roster is dominated by diesel locomotives from the native BT&S and the parent railroad, Lehigh Valley.

The Lehigh Valley Railroad, the Route of the Black Diamond Express, John Wilkes and Maple Leaf.

Jeff: You went to your Dad's to watch the game? I didn't think you liked football?

That's right. I don't care for the game. I liked it just fine many years ago, even played when I was in high school but was taken out by a busted knee. I played again later after I left the army but strictly non-competition. Just fun games with neighbors and friends. I lost interest in the game in the late 90's. The Super Bowl is the only football game I watch anymore but it's not so much for the game but for the commercials. The ones last year were mostly tasteless wastes of time and money. Some of them this year were somewhat better. I liked the one from Volkswagen with the song 'Get In, Get Happy' done to the beat of the old song 'Come On, Get Happy'. This year it was a bit special because we had family visiting and I don't get to see them much. It had been three years since they were all here and this visit was the first time I had ever seen my great nephew. I can't think of any better reason.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a couple Strawberry Pop Tarts please. No just cold thank you. No wait, I like Pop Tarts, but not as much as that Pineapple plate. I'll have that istead please. Hold the poi Ick!. Thanks

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38.

Great. Now you watch. Ray’s set that water tower on top of that pretty power plant and next thing you know, it’ll probably sift down making that thing dirty too. (siiigh)

Speaking of Ray, we Methodists seem to have assigned seating. Come in and someone is sitting in your spot, they get glared at. There also has been heard whispered to another (oh, they sat in so and so’s seat). New people are always welcomed at the Williamsville United Methodist Church with open arms and a bag of microwave popcorn (Thanks for popping in) and for a limited time until supplies are gone, a coffee mug with the Church’s picture on it (to help you wake up and remember where you’re supposed to go)……as long as you don’t sit in the Marshall’s spot. Hey, our family settled this tract of pew long ago.

Oh I have C-Nile virus. BOY do I have C-nile virus.

I could adjust I think to any shift I suppose. I prefer days naturally, but I could adjust. I know some people who actually prefer midnightsTongue Tied. But the one I wouldn’t want, would hate actually, would be swing shift. The mine does that and so does the glass factory in Lincoln. One week days, then days off (your weekend if you will). Then next week afternoons, then days off, then midnights, then days off. Then days again….. Don’t see how they do it.

Vincent- In the picture the tape looks fine. In real life though I would think the thickness of the tape would be a distraction. Don’t know. Maybe not. But like I said, in the picture it locks fine.

Ulrich- Be careful on the trip……prayers for you and your family continue.

Didn’t get to the trainroom yesterday. Started to, but between Ziva and well...., shear laziness, I didn’t make it. Last week I think I did nothing at all for the good of anything. Hope I don’t do that this week. I have things to do! I did go uptown to watch cartoons last night, a weekly ritual , and that’s when I remembered the Super Bowl was on. Got ther the last 15 minues of the great power outage break. I said….what, they play in the driving rain, blinding snow, slop through slippery mud, but when a few lights go out they can’t play? I mean it was still as light a s a cloudy day there, maybe brighter. They said something about the radios or something not w88king so the coaches can’t talk to the players. I said I bet Terry Bradshaw and Roger Staubach worried about that. But all in all I gotta say what I saw was not too bad I suppose. A couple commercials got a chuckle from me.

Welp, off to the Church……then we'll see.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Morning gang!Cowboy

Flo, can I get a plain stack of pancakes, and some purple grape jelly to smear all over them, oh and coffee in a Ravens mug!Laugh

Oh the nutcases spilled out of the bars last night and into the streets, and the party continues tomorrow when the team comes home and they get paraded across Baltimore! Glad I don't have to go to B-more for anything!

Ulrich, sorry to hear about your Dad. prayers for peace Angel

Jeffrey The VW commercial was especially funny, all it needed was that bus in the backround!

Speaking of commercials, this one got me. Not that I like Dodge trucks, but because of where I was raised. watch?v=sYJzSiPSN 0

Good morning. It's 49° with 87% humidity. It'll be cloudy with a fair chance of rain. The high will be 68°.

Nothing in particular planned for today. I might be able to get in some uninterrupted layout time today. Then again someday pigs will fly. Yesterday I had time to run a train around the layout a few times after I shut the computer down last night but not much else. By that time I was wiped. Looks like I have some older freight cars and bits and pieces headed my way. I'm also working on picking up a used loco or two. 70's and 80's era stuff. Looks like the projects will be picking up again. Good thing too. I need something to keep my mind off recent events. The more the better. Who am I trying to kid! It's just fantasy project work and I'm trying to bury myself and my feelings in it. I said good-bye to my mother a long time ago when she still knew who I was but it's still hard to take. I miss her so much.

Well,

went to Physical Therapy {PT} for knee and hip. Did a few exercises and got a wonderful hip massage! feels better but will have to see how it is tomorrow..

Now to some laundry.

A few dishes.

Super bowl is only football I watch too. I was a skinny short runt in HS and didn't get in the way of the big burly footballers in HS who played for the school! SO, I never followed the game. We only watach the super bowl for commercials like Jeffrey said, and I went to bed shrotly after the dismal half-time show, as I had to get up early for 8 AM PT.

ULRICH- Sorry to hear about your father,

So, now for a nap and then to household chores.

later...

Extra strong Italian Roast coffee in a CLEAR LAKE LUMBER CO mug, please.

***Jeffrey, it has been about 20 years and I still miss my mom, it is only the intensity that fades, not the memories. I understand.

***Karl, that ad got to me, too. Especially the part about horses, having been there. Could have swapped farmer for rancher and would have had the same impact. Paul Harvey was great.

***Jake, nice layout!Thumbs Up

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Morn...  Ah, I guess I'm too late to say that...  Afternoon everyone!

The site has been flaky all morning and I couldn't get to the page to reply...  Anyway it appears to be upo and running now, so I will have breakfast.  Zoe, I'll have a short stack of buttermilk pancakes with real maple syrup, a couple sausage patties, and lots of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug.  Thank you Ma'am!

Jeffrey, I still miss my parents too.  Especially my Dad.  But time will heal and thoughts will be a good remembrance of your mom...  Good thing to keep busy with other things for the moment.

Ulrich, my prayers for your family at this time!

Have stuff to get done...  Catch you all later!

Hi Guys

Orientation went good. I start Wednesday night ( hopefully I can adapt to nights ) went to the hobby shop after but didn't really see anything that caught my eye. He is doing a walthers order up soon so I will email my list over to him sometime by the end of the week. Still trying to get some odds and ends for my scrap yard scene.

I will do some chores around the house tonight and tomorrow because I think I will be somewhat sluggish the first few days. Might try to spend tonight and tomorrow on the railroad. I was going to start a excel spreadsheet of my current rolling stock so that I can have a inventory on my pc. Might also sneek some PC games in tonight Stick out tongue

Afternoon guys

Todd, I'm leaning towards painting the ends white now. All the photos of those kinds of cars I can find suggest white ends and not white stripes.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

you can probably get away with white ending them Packer, it looks like 529377 series cars carried white ends on the rotary coupler ends.

Coffee refill, please.

Bachmann Silver Series 85' smoothside passenger cars: Anyone have any and how decent are they? How about Concor's versions? Some brands tend to be soooo pricey by comparison, just wondering how much of a difference there is between these and let's say BLI or MTH? Any experience with and/or thoughts on the various options will be much appreciated!?!

To tuckered out to cut firewood, so it's the heatpumps for heat tonight. Will be resting in the corner booth until evening critter rounds.

It's been a busy day. Went to my fathers place for breakfast this morning. Then brought my great nephew here to see the layout in action. Boy when I turned on the room lights he thought he'd died and gone to heaven! His eyes got almost as big as his face. I showed him how to work the Zephyr and he picked it up real quick. He got to run a long train being pulled by three geeps and a slug then I showed him how to switch them off and put a trio of F units without touching the locos. After running the F units for a while for a while it was time to take him back to his mother. From there I went to town and got a couple of pizzas. I haven't yet had a chance to eat a piece of either one yet. As soon as I got back my father called and said he was coming to pick me up to go look at a new yard tractor. He needed to see how well it fits me before he buys it. Well I stuck the pizzas in the fridge and we went and looked. It's a large Murray-Ohio, 46" cut, 20hp Briggs and Stratton, hydrostatic tranny. With the exception of the parking brake which is set with the left foot, a plus for me, it's all hand controlled. With the left hand advance the drive lever forward or backward for forward and reverse. The further it's pushed the faster the tractor goes. Steering is by steering wheel. I would have nixed steering levers real quick and he knows it. I'm sure I'll have to make a slight modification so it can backed up with the blades engaged. I told him I like it and he bought it on the spot. We loaded it onto his pickup and brought it home and I put it in the shed. It's already been made clear to the others that I'm the primary operator. They'll have to live with the little MTD Yardman. Now why did he get this new one? Well the old Peerless is going away. After 15+ years the engine is still good but the rest of it is pretty much worn out and we can't get the parts we need to fix it any longer. The mowing deck is rusting out and the tranny is singing it's death song. He saw late in the season last year that I was having a hard time with the Yardman. Most of it's controls are set up for the right foot. That doesn't work well for me. Driving it in forward was hard enough, reverse was extremely difficult. This new one has the physical size and weight of the old Peerless so adjusting to it is no problem. Well enough about that. I now have some time to myself and I hear a pizza calling from the fridge.

Rats, all this talk of pizza has made me hungry and I can't leave for home yet. Nobody delivers here either as we're "too far out in the country",

Rob - I have Con Cor and Bachman both. I favor the ..... RivaRossi? The ConCor are very light weight and fairly basic but they work ok with weight in them. The Bachman are much more detailed and the trucks with articulated couplers work well on tight radius track. The couplers themselves are a disaster and they got swapped for KD's. The cars are very sensitive to grade variations most especially the ending transition at the top of a grade. Mine constantly uncoupled until in fustration I fit them with the old horn hook couplers - problem solved. Hopefully your track work is better than mine was on the last layout. This time I sanded the transitions and seem to have no issues (said in a very soft voice so as not to draw Mr. Murphys' attention).

Jeff - I loe it at the museum when the little ones light up as the trains start moving. Makes all the effort worthwhile.

Back to it for me.   Catch ya laters, J.R.

Fruit & veggie smoothie, please.

***J.R., did both the Bachmann and Concor cars come lighted? If so, do they both work on a DCC layout "out of the box"? Something I do not get about Bachmann is this: I bought their Climx loco and their log skidder car and the the coupler on the car is considerably lower. Only half of those two couplers connect up, so I won't know until I try them together if they will remain coupled at all. You would think that at least within the same manufacturer, they would have across the board standards for something as important as coupler height.

Jeff: When do you guys start cutting the grass in Louisiana? we dont have to worry about that for close to May

Really this time of year we should be having our harshest weather but we're not. Usually mowing season season runs nine to ten months and it's not unusual to be cutting the grass at Christmas. Well our cold weather set in a little early little year so no Christmas time mowing. Now the grass has been slowly growing for the past few weeks and is really greening up from the recent rains. Mowing may start in a week or two. The extended forecast through to the end of the month is showing almost consistent highs of high 60's -  low 70's.

JeremyB
sounds like your nephew is really digging the trains. Do they live near you so that he can see them more often?

Yeah, he's really nuts about then trains. His father is trying to get him interested in cars but I think he's fighting a losing battle there. If my own experience is any indication (I was a hopeless train nut from the first moment I clapped eyes on one and it's the same story for him) once a train nut, always a train nut. He may move away from them in his teen years but like me he'll be drawn back to them like being pulled by a gigantic magnet. My father got me interested in cars and I I messed with them for many years but the trains were always first and foremost. Oh, and my older niece and her son live in Virginia. I don't know what her husband does and I don't really care. My younger sister and her other half live in Pennsylvania but she works in Virginia. I told my niece to take the boy to Steamtown at Scranton, Pa and watch him just melt down being that close to the trains.

 Evening Folks

 Flo, a Beer pleases!

Ulrich My Friend, if it is your Father time, I hope it is a peaces full journey and my family best wishes to your Mother and your family.

Work Front I was off today, but yesterday it seems all was forgiven. Taylor (manager) treated me like a human again, I am sure he realized what a ass he had been to me. Second visit with Dave (area supervisor) went well, Dave had got his pound of flesh on the last visit. So I guess Taylor did not need anymore out of my butt!

Got little done today, was very tired but I got a few things done.

My old computer chair / train-room / snake room wheels had finally gave out and was unsafe for my wife to use. I all so fell on my caboose a few times. Picked up a High Back Executive Chair from Good Will my wife spotted the other day. Not sure if it will hold up, creaks a lot. Need to make sure all the screws are tight and lube the joints. My now dead chair was from the 70's and was built like a rock, all steel frame.

 See you later.

Maybe when he gets into his teen years and he still displays an interest in railroads, you might want to consider telling him about Rail Camp. I went to Rail Camp 2012 with lone geep and had a really good time. It was in Scranton PA during 2012.

Ulrich: I'm so sorry to hear about your father going downhill. I hope when his time comes he goes quickly and peacefully in his sleep. It would be the best way for him. My most heartfelt feeling to you and your family at this time. I know how you must be feeling at this time my friend.

Hey guys

Trying to type one-handed (well, without the use of a finger in my left hand) kinda sucks. I tried to pick up 3 boxes of product (about 120 pounds total). I did get it up, but when trying to manuver them around other boxes I scrapped my left hand against a metal pedestal, then dropped the boxes on my left pinkie. So my entire left pinkie is pretty much one big scab at this point.

Did I mention that on top of the 12 hour shift saturday, and the 9 hour shift sunday; I couldn't get too sleep last night and I pulled a normal 8-hour shift today. So I'm tired, and it didn't help that when I left for work, Delilah bolted out the door and I had to go after her. Ugh... So tired...

Sorry I didn't post much earlier, was trying to figure out what to do for my thrall gons. I'm going to go around town tommorrow and see if I can find some 3/16" wide masking tape. My plan is to paint the middle end panel white, then use the tape for the stripe, then paint black over it. It requires less masking then the other way around.

Ulrich, Sorry to hear about your dad. But I'm with Jeff on the matter.

Ken, Check PMs

BN Gary, White ends where kind of an 80s thing for the thrall gons. Lots of pictures I've been able to destinguish the cara data on say they were redone between 1986 and 1988. But there is a video from 1983 with a white end one. Perhaps the last batch was recieved with white ends or it was one of the first done? I like the stripes better though, and I won't have to change the car data for it.

Q Garry, I'll try to get a better picture of those 2 C30-7s anticlimbers tomorrow.

It's early, but I might hit the hay now...

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

theres Garry of the CB&Q and theres Gary (me) of the BN could this be a coincidence?

It's been a busy day and I'm wiped. Ran some trains for my great nephew today. He used my Digitrax Zephyr to change out motive power from a lashup of geeps and a slug to a trio of F units with minimal coaching from me. Well, time to pack it in. See y'all tomorrow.
