Jim, thay is my understanding also.

I think there maybe some confusion out there just because of the prior modelexpo rivs still on the shelve. I asked Jim Walthers of Walthers to clarify their warranties all the Rivarossi product line that is advertised in their new reference book.

Also asked about the modelexpo rivs and what the modeler should do once the walthers warranty expires and who will or is the riv authorizied repair/parts vendor.

With so many manufacturers/distributors out there
of locos(15 or more) what is needed is a posting
of all their warranties. They all vary, from 60 days to life and a lot of times it's not spelled in in the literature that comes with the engine.

For the kind of $money we spend it would be comforting to know the warranty terms and I will post the Walther's reply.

As I understand it, the Walthers warranty only applies to the new stuff that they sell--there still is a lot non-Walthers Rivarossi product out there.

I believe that the warranties are issued by Walthers who has the Riv franchise.

Try www.internethobbies.com They seem to be good on there warrenties for Riv's. Just ordered a NKP 2-8-4 Berkshire w double tenders, $166.00 on-line. Haven't received it yet, its been back order with Trainworld since early Jan. DON'T deal with Bob at www.internettrains.com Sent me a damaged unit, said it was on back order then said NKP discontinued. Also took long in refunding my credit card. Good Luck!

Your are starting off at the top of the line. I had
the older Rivs and a lot of poor electrical problems
that you will not experience with the Allegheny.
This model has a much larger electrical wheelbase that extends into the tender,a dramatic improvementover earlier efforts.
This engine weighs in at 26.5 oz yet it has traction tires that could slip off the wheels
according to ModelRailroad News of Merlin Oregon.

I saw for the first time yesterday the Trix in our
hobby shop for $500.00 + tax.
Again according to ModelRailroad News(NOT MR) the engine & tender weigh in at 2lbs. 10 oz
There is a connection for DCC decorder,Digital sound system,Kadee couplers,RP25 wheel contours.
May also have a year warranty as in the case of the Allegheny.
Don't know if it has traction tires.
Perhaps their web site www.trixtrains.com could tell you more, I have not been there.

Also the lifelike model, has 20 wheel electrical
pick-up into the tender has a lifetime warranty.
No mention of traction tires and was reviewed by
MR, March 2000.
Have not heard of any negative comments about this
baby.

It appears that there's three great models out there, tempting and $pricey.

I'm a warranty freak, so I would sleep better at night with the Lifelife, but operating & detail performance should be compared if possible.

Charles:

Thanks on your comments on Modelexpo. I got a reply from the author of the website and it seems that this was just a Website Design project and that the content was just for show. Sure looked convincing!

I just started into the HO Hobby and my first purchase was the Rivarossi Allegheny. Very impressive! I am setting my sight for my 2nd steam loco purchase.

I am interested in the Big Boy engine. How does the Rivarossi Big Boy compares to the Trix Big Boy? I have not seen a side by side photo comparison of the two.

Thanks in Advance.

I brought up that web site and under Warranty, Modelexpo is listed as the party furnishing the warranty.
Before you buy, investigate.
Dealing with Modelexpo is not a pleasant experience.
It took 46 days to get a refund back from them on a Rivarossi, prior to Walthers taking over the distribution.

You should make sure that these models are the ones covered by the Walthers new franchise agreement with Rivarossi.
Then, these models will carry a one year warranty.

The prior franchise agreement was with Modelexpo
that has been terminated but there are a lot of those locos still in the pipe line and on the dealers shelf. We have over 50 in this town and all without warranty.

Some of the bigger locos, in addition to the allegheny, also have the new allegheny drive in them.
Investigate before you buy.

Has anyone ever heard of Jim's Trains or
dealt with this company? They seem to have good
pricing on Rivarossi products. Their website is
www.jimkuykendall.com/jimstrains/steam.asp

Thanks in Advance.
