Hi Guys,

Thanks very much for you comments! Very much apperciated.

Born in early 70s so I am at a loss as to what Lionel did in HO in the 60s. Certainly would consider buying another HO Lionel. No bitter after taste!

The later turbine "Blaster" would be nice?!

;)

Back in 2001 I had their HO Pacific Steam Loco(4-6-2) in my hand. Didn't know what I had until I
flipped it over and the plate said "Lionel corp. This baby hadn't been cleaned in 35 years.

Put some MAAS Metal Paste Cleaner to the pick-up drivers and WOW!.
In 63 Lionel make nine HO outfits including a Santa Fe & Pennsylvania passenger consist.
Some of this stuff may still appear on E-Bay.

Hi Guys,

As mentioned in the other posting, I agree the handrails leave a litlle to be desired but overall I am impressed.

Speaking to people here in Oz I had the suggestion of Flash in the mechanism. Which I think was quite possible.

LOL Chuck. From the sounds of it, you didn't know Lionel was into HO in the 1950's too, eh? Most of their early HO stuff was done for them by a then new Italian firm called Rivarossi. Even Mantua got into the act, making the General set in HO for Lionel. I believe that set was catalogued in 1958 or 59. Lionel was even into OO in the late1930's - even doing an OO companion/equivalent of their O scale (yes I do mean scale, and not tinplate) hudson. The 700E O scale Hudson , #5344 IIRC, was (and still is) a real beauty - rivaling brass, and could be set up to run on the outside 3rd rail pickup so prominent among the O scale modelers at the time. I'm not sure the OO version was nearly so nice or detailed. The die work (craftsmanship) for the O version was all done in Italy in 1937, though not by Rivarossi. I don't think Rivarossi existed yet. Enjoy the hobby.

Here's hoping Lionel has a Southern Pacific AC-12 and/or DM&IR M-4 in the works. We need as many steam manufatures as possible. I hope they don't leave HO again.

Hi Karl. I thought the MR review was pretty straight forward and honest, not pulling any punches. But it didn't leave me with a bad impression of the loco or Lionel's efforts. MRN also did a very recent review of the loco, which was also well done. It too left me wih a favorable overall impression. I own one of them (the #61) and agree witht both reviewers assesments. I think it's a fine locomotive and would recommend it myself. I was even hoping Lionel will continue in their getting into the HO market, based on the results of their efforts with the turbine. Enjoy the hobby!

I recently took the time to read MR's review. Carefully and between the lines. Not because I am a UP modeler or looking to buy anything soon, but because I was really interested in how Lionel was going to attack the HO market. Was it going to be serious, or just a glancing blow, like they have done in years prior. MR's review seemed about as cold as one gets without being blatant about its faults. After seeing the Challengers in action and reading the Verada review, it seems to me like Lionel is going to be another "also ran" in the HO market. [V]

There were a few isolated concerns posted last April but I think they have been resolved.
Perhaps this link have some partial history.

Anybody had problems with the gearbox mechanism locking up on their new Lionel Veranda (HO)?

I had mine all of a sudden lock up on the rear. I had a look and dis-assembled it to find out what was wrong and saw nothing, no track pins, hair, etc??

I turned the gearbox mechanism with a screwdriver and with only a little turning it freed up and now runs like a dream again.

Any known issues?
