From the sounds of it, you didn't know Lionel was into HO in the 1950's too, eh? Most of their early HO stuff was done for them by a then new Italian firm called Rivarossi. Even Mantua got into the act, making the General set in HO for Lionel. I believe that set was catalogued in 1958 or 59. Lionel was even into OO in the late1930's - even doing an OO companion/equivalent of their O scale (yes I do mean scale, and not tinplate) hudson. The 700E O scale Hudson , #5344 IIRC, was (and still is) a real beauty - rivaling brass, and could be set up to run on the outside 3rd rail pickup so prominent among the O scale modelers at the time. I'm not sure the OO version was nearly so nice or detailed. The die work (craftsmanship) for the O version was all done in Italy in 1937, though not by Rivarossi. I don't think Rivarossi existed yet. Enjoy the hobby.

Greg
