Walthers' 23,000 Gal "goldline tankcars: did railroads have them?

i just saw that walthers is coming out this year with 23,000 gallons funnel flow tankcars in their new "gold line" series. they are decorated for UP, ATSF, KCS, BNSF and a couple of other railroads. do the big railroads have these tankcars? i always thought the majority of tankcars were owned by private shippers like UTLX and GATX

I can't vouch for this particular car, but I do know that BN, KCS, SP and others did roster some very large, modern frameless tank cars for shuttling diesel fuel to remote locations.

My recollection is that these cars are 23-25k gallon and look more like the MicroTrains 55' tank car in N or the MDC frameless tank car in HO.

gelwood.railfan.net probably has tons of photos of these,

Southern Pacific's tankcars without underframes were built by ACF and have a capacity of about 20,000 gallons. They have been listed as having 23,500 gallon capacity, however, they look too small (length and diameter) to have this large of a capacity. I would say that MDC cars is the closeest model. The major problem is that it does not have ACF style tank saddles (the part between the tank and the end platforms). I have seen them carrying diesel fuel and sludge. I am sure I have heard of them carrting lube oil.

To see photographs of these SP tank cars, go to http://www.railgoat.railfan.net/spcars/byclass/tank/o100-07.htm

I believe that is just an error. Those are actually the single car versions of the new 89' autoracks.

932-4871-- Gold Line(TM) Tri-Level Enclosed Auto Carrier - Assembled (Frisco)
932-4872-- Gold Line(TM) 23,000 Gallon Funnel-Flow Tank Car; Limited-Run 2-Packs - RTR -- CP Rail
and...
932-24872-- Gold Line(R) 89' Tri-Level Enclosed Auto Carrier; Limited-Run 2-Pack - RTR -- CP Rail ...

The item numbers don't match, they must have entered the autoracks as tank cars when they put them in the catalog. And i doubt if those railroads had a tank car of that type.

The whole 4800 series has been autoracks, they would not just throw some tank cars in there to mess with people... (and their own system)

The RTR tank cars have been in the 7200 series, and the new "Gold Line" tank cars also relfect that.
