Robby P.ts a southern thing. I was born and raised in the south, and I have a HUGE accent.
I've always wondered how THAT w**ks... Back in college I knew a wonderful young lady from DuBois, PA. She graduated from Punxsatawny, home of THE Groundhog. Anyhow, she had a "cute" Pennsylvania dialect, mostly detected when saying "pop" (sounded like "pwuaap."). After she graduated, she took a job in Lufkin, Texas. About the 2nd or 3rd phone call I got from her...I couldn't recognize her voice anymore. She'd gotten a full-blown Texas draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawl. From there, she moved to ROCKINGHAM, and her accent/dialect changed accordingly. Now she's back in PA with her second husband . I wonder if she's speaking Pennsylvanian again...
I've noticed from time to time I slip into a bit of a draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawl. Don't know why. It usually hits after I've spent some time in Kansas, and I haven't been there since Dec. '08! Maybe it's just my "inner country boy" coming forth.
ROBBY P: I've seen some prototype shots of hoppers like your PC/MRL job...you've captured the look admirably!!! I think you oughta do a "how-to" and shop it around to the magazines.
JEFF: Nice after-the-blizzard pic...
LEE: I really like THAT backdrop The historic photos really "flow" well with the RR scene...adds a museum-ish look to the place. Of course, the modeling does THAT already!
TODD: Rerun really liked THAT last shot of Missy... the lad IS smitten with her. He says she isn't "fat," just "big-boned/big-framed..." He then mumbled something about "just more of her to love..." as he wandered back to his tent.

Accents, I can safely say I don't really have an accent. I grew up in Texas and in Florida, but never picked up an accent. When I go to Wisconsin everyone can understand me fine; although some slag terms are a bit different between here and there.

Well I survived todays 'procedure' OK and true to his word I was on the 'table' and then in recovery. I can't drive for 24 hours or make important decisions for 48 so I will stay home from work tomorrow- wouldn't want to have the company crash because of me. Well actually it is a great excuse to stay home and do some work on the RR. Besides it is my wife's birthday. We had planned a BBQ lunch with one of her co-workers whose birthday is on the same day but as the forecast is for 16C, rain and wind we have postponed it until Wednesday.
Ah, the topic of accents. Up here in the Great White North we claim that we don't have one but of course everyone does. When my wife was head group that had members all over N.America, the New York ones said she sounded Scottish but to my ears she sure doesn't. As far as an accent that is easy to pick up, it would be Scottish for me. I once went out with a girl from Scotland and the only way I could really understand her and her relatives was to think in their accent. Good thing it didn't last too long or I might be saying Och instead of Eh. My wife and I watch so much Brit TV that we don't even notice the accents anymore.
Ken, Tiff is a real cutey and I'm with you on spoiling them at that age. We make Robbie sit for a treat but Pippa just gets one for showing up. I never could really say no to her. She used to love to sleep on my lap when I was reading and demanded to be picked up which of course I did. She is too arthritic to do that now and mostly sleeps flat on her side. Have you noticed Tiff having trouble handling heat? Pippa does but our friends who breed Westies and have grooming business say that is typical of old dogs. The result is Pippa has a very short hair cut.

Garry.......I was born in Va, but moved with my grandparents to NC when I was VERY young. In NC I lived between Ashville, and Charlotte. I also was about 20 minutes from SC.

Morning all~ I've been gone a spell, somewhere oh .. not too long ago, cable shut off our service. We've been here 23 years in this house, always paid on time, and Time Warner decides to shut us down cuz we're a bit late on payment. But the other morning, well I didn't want to put on my reading glasses.. and figured if I just blow up the screen and magnify it, why I could read a whole lot easier. So here I am reading the Diner forum and come across Rerun's pic.. ALL BLOWN UP. My face and body kind of jumped back with a bit of a 'Whoa'

Ulrich that photo of the Prime Rib happens to be Jeanne's favorite dish. Oh about 29 years ago, our first baby was born. And in those days, I know it seems impossible but a Catholic hospital served 'fine meals'.
We were up at 4am off to the hospital to give birth. Except the baby wasn't born until 1 pm. Having missed breakfast .. and lunch.. giving birth she was starving. Here blood pressure was low and was being monitored and any meal wasn't even a consideration. Juice they gave her~
Low and behold they happen to place a dish in front of her, Prime Rib and as if something in her said EAT!
Call it what you want but all she knew she was hungry and its her favorite, ummm~ Prime Rib!
The nurse came back and looked at Jeanne and said, "Oh, you weren't suppose get that, that was for someone else!" Jeanne replied .. "I know but I feel better~"
Now as far as my layout is concerned, I've been cleaning up the whole area. Took 4 days to take every thing off, every house every piece of track and try to place it in another room in an orderly fashion. Of course that included taking the vacumn to it and a damp wash cloth. Just seeing Jeffs layout and he speedy work, well I was a bit amazed.
ONE clean layout to work on now, I do feel better about it.
I"m still laying cork and playing a bit. Not to bore anyone too much but here's what I've been up to.
Yeah I know.. so what. lol. But if you look closer at the cork with the yellow push pins, well the outer edge has a separation from the wood. I did this on purpose to give the outer edge of the cork a rise. I would guess, this is the 'super elevation' approach to give it a bit of a realistic look? Well I forget the name, but its just to give the outer rail a rise. Anyone care to inform me on what its called?
I had read somehwhere in this forum where someone had left the outer edge up by doing some application that caught my eye.
By placing the push pins only on the inside edge of the cork, it causes the out egde to furrow or 'ride up' a bit leaving a gap as you see in the above photo. Of course this is much easier approach and I won't get into it right now to bore you all.
All I can say is that after doing this other approach with tape.. and on a TURN, well I was ready to try something a bit easier.
Placing tape on one after another was a bit much, like I said.. especially on a turn. It did give it a rise on the outer edge, but I prefer doing the stretch pull let it ride up method and let the push pins hold everything in place, while the outer edge rides up.
Now of course I did cut off the tape and it looks fairly clean. Look at the lowest level, the tape has been cut off and looks clean.
The tape on the higher level is one with masking tape on the outside cork to protect it while I sand down the inside rail to aid in the over all look of super elevation.
Well who knows.. maybe I got the terminology all wrong.. but thats what I've been up to.
OH on a side note here.. the past two weeks has been hot. HOT I tell you! I mowed the lawn yesterday morning at 7:30 while it was still fairly cool.

Charlie, you did see her picture right? She is a American Eskimo, she never liked heat. We have had her on Purina for older dogs now for a week. It has made a major differences in her walking, the Glucosamie is good for arthritis for people and dogs. You might give it a try and see if it helps Pippa.
Train Front Got the feeders in and the RSD 15 now can haul butt all the way a round the layout. Ran the Big Boy and it had no problems with the changes I have made. Going to take a little while to relearn the tack. Ran a Monon freight train into the back of a parked Santa Fe A&B. There was a spur there, now it is part on the main. On the first run and freight train did catch the passenger station and moved it a couple of feet.
Still have to lay the passenger train spur, another 15 feet to go.
Self Medicating Don't worry Garry, I am done with playing Doctor. But, it did help pin point why I had been feeling so bad.

Well worked on the layout a little last night and I'm paying for it today. I've got this damned cellulitus without going in to details causing everyone to leave their breakfast on the floor in plain English it sucks. I got tired of looking at empty tunnels so I made some tunnel walls or liners out of these craft blocks I picked up in AC Moore, scale wise they aren't HO but actually O scale but that ok cause I'm covering them with ground goop and texturing the goop to look like rock. We'll see how it comes out. I have ZERO luck with the W/S tunnel liner molds but still may give them one more try. These things should work out ok as I'm not building a full liner but only what you can see. Both tunnels are in deep scenes and the inside can only been seen from certain vantage points so why go through the extra work. I used to think guys who did stuff like that were cheating or doing shoddy work but i have a new found understanding for it.
Seem like the heat has finally left us well at east for the time being any way. Went to wait for the school bus with my son this morning (last week of summer school/camp oh joy) and it was actually really nice outside with a nice breeze blowing. Just took a look up at the clouds and said thanks.
On the critter front I can add one Possum to my catch list. Got up real early and found him in the trap. decided besides being ugly as all sin they aren't going to bother the garden so I released him. Well right they must be some of the dumbest animals god placed on the earth cause this little idiot goes back into the trap and starts hissing and snarling at me.....lol I just said ok suit yourself and left him in there.Sooner or later he'll find some place dark to go hide. Just like his not so distant cousin the politician.

Garry- Yesterday you posted a picture and asked if there were any thoughts. I do have one. It's a great picture of a great scene with great modeling. However it makes me greatly upset to see examples of types of scenery that I would like to have but can't. It's a shame I can't have everything on the layout I would like.
They say the Southern accent is the easiest accent to unconsciously acquire and the hardest to unconsciously lose. Chances are If you slow down the speed at which you speak, many will pick up a Southern twang on a few words almost immediately. Spend a little time with someone who has an "accent" and you will find more and more of the "accent" appear. It is actually a more relaxed manner of speech. Most regional accents come and go depending on where you move and how strong your accent is, but generally doesn‘t leave completely or at all if you move to a region where an accent is either non-existent or not as pronounced. Say as in Philly as opposed to Boston. Different regions of the South have different variations, but overall, is the second largest "accent" United Statsians have by populous. As for area covered it is the largest taking into consideration those who speak with a drawl but do not live in the traditional South. For some reason not all southerners have the "complete accent" even if they are born and raised in the area, but most will have at least a few of the words you can pick up on as having the twang. Some thinking is this is a conscious trained effort to get the "hillbilly" out of the speech. Though much has to do with the teacher who teaches English in the formative years coupled with the strength of the accent the parents have. Many times what a child hears most is what they do. Usually, some rural folks will have a bit of the accent regardless where they live with exception of the extreme border to the north and east. Though some words still pick up. Now, if you think I've studied this, I haven't. I made it all up.
Keith- Actually, our dogs name is Missy. Chris's dog is Rerun. They seem to have this long distance romance going on. It's a dog thing. Funny, as I look down at the ruckus going on on the floor beside me, I think she's dreaming of running through the yard with Rerun right now. Could be. Now it looks like they've stopped for a bite to eat. Imagine that from a fat dog.

My kind of perfect day outside the here in the Finger Lakes. Currently 67°F with a high of 72°F this afternoon. Besides THAT the sun is shining out there!
Have to mow lawn later this afternoon. I will wait until the grass dries off a bit as we did get some rain last night. Have a few errands to run (including some that should have been done yesterday) but most of the day should be clear for doing some layout stuff.

Good morning. It's 83 and sunny. The high will be 96 and it will be partly cloudy.I got a little more joint compound spread on the layout extension and the front edge of the main part of the layout yesterday before emptying the first gallon gallon bucket of compound. Later today I'll likely get started on the second bucket. This will be used to secure the track on the rest of the layout as well as build up low spots under the track. It will also make for a less steep embankment from tie level than the built-on roadbed of the EZ-Track provides. Also today we'll see if the impossible occurs. Namely that will be if my nephew shows up to help change out the steering column in the van.
Good Morning gang, It is a long trek up here to the Diner now. I think one month of this is enough. Next month lets bring it back closer to home. It is also hard for the girls to serve us with those long fur parkas and muklucks they wear to stay warm.
By the way Girls when you get a chance, I would like a toasted bacon and tomatoe sandwich on whole wheat with a HC this morning as it is cool out.

Ya know Tom, there was an article that I read within the last couple of years (can't remember where) about a fellow who went out through his basement wall with a long section of PVC pipe, I think in the range of about twenty feet, and put some "O" guage track in it to use as a tail track for a wye on his layout as I remember.
So you wouldn't be the first one to try it.

Well here's the MRL hopper. I weathered up the wheels, couplers, and added some air-hoses. I'm currently working on a St. Marys boxcar (the white car). White is about the HARDEST to do. This car will be very rusty, and grimy!!

Todd ... I did not intend to make you feel badly with the picture; sorry. Actually, you can make anything you want. It's a series of micro-baby steps for everything. Patience is key. It's a relaxing way to take sanity breaks from the rest of the world's problems. However, sometimes the hobby has its own frustrations, and we need to step away when that happens.
Keith .. thanks for the comment. I explained how I do track recently. Rock strata is made from broken plaster pieces pancaked onto each other.I had a thread on rock strata maybe three years ago. There is Woodland Scenics material for ballast and other parts of the scenery. The F-units are Stewart models with details added.
I'm trying to teach myself digital photography along with learning other high tech stuff like DCC. My learning curve has a negative slope at times. Oh well.

Well I'll be darned. I just seen a pig fly! My nephew showed up like he said he would and we got the column changed out. It had a couple more wires than the old one though. The van the new one came out of had cruise control and mine doesn't. So that explained the extra wires. They're just tied up out of the way for now.Except for that it was a perfect fit.

Floor Wars Got some of the DAP Flexible Floor Patch and Leveler down. I sure wished I was told about this stuff the first time around. Goes on pretty much like plastic body filler, except it does not set up in 10 minutes. I all so said the heck with the directions like a guy should, and filled all the bad spots to the top.
Made cardboard tents out of beer boxes so the dogs will not step in it. Wife just got home, she does not sell anything yet! I was done at 1:00 PM, it said it would be dry in 6 hours so we will see later tonight.
With some luck, I will have some Luna down Wednesday and get some tile down as well. Getting ready to pull some base boards and paint them. Going to sandblast the heat vents (wife has been painting them over and over for 18 years) and get them painted.

Hey all, school's pretty draining so far. And come September I'll both be refereeing soccer and also my rugby coach mentioned in a recent email exchange I ahd with him we'll be practicing once a week starting in september.
No Model RR pictures, but I road home with my friend today and he drove by the tracks (which is how he usually goes home). I caught pics of these two hoppers (he slowed down so I could snag them out the window).
First up we have an old Conrail hopper that still has NYC reporting marks, of all things!!!
Also we have this Southern Hopper that still has SOU reporting marks. No pics of the engine, as we hit the tracks midway down the first passing siding.

Sawyer, The NYC reporting marks are a result of the CR being split up between the CSX and NS. The CSX got the NYC part while the NS got the PRR part. Hence rolling stock with NYC are really CSX, and the ones with PRR are really NS. Not really sure about the SOU car, but I think NS uses them for there equipment as well as NS.
Garry, I've always driven. For me it's a non-stop trip, except for gas and food (always made at the same stop). Usually I'll leave here around 4 in the morning and get there around 1am.
Jeff, can you pass the flying pig this way?

Vincent........I've been wanting to do a car like this for awhile. I bought it as a "MRL", and added extra white paint around the decal. I sanded the paint, to make it look like the old logo was still showing. Then I sprayed the green over the blue. Sanded, and sanded. I've been trying to raise the bar for me lately. Try harder projects. I just hope they pay out for me.

Life in the weekly newspaper bizz-ness is "feast or famine." This week, so far...is "famine" with nothing on the schedule until high school volleyball Thursday evening. Then the stuff hits the fan with high school football Friday night, two events on Saturday, and an interview now on Sunday evening. So, during the "lull," the calm before the storm; I'm enjoying some leisure time. Although I did manage to finally hack off a tree limb THAT has been bugging me all summer long. I'm also catching up on the stuff piling up on the RR w**k table: two coal hoppers now sit awaiting dullcote, a patched CNW grain hopper finally got it's end-numbers (ohhhhhhhhhhh what fun THAT was! ), a boxcar awaits the next Walthers order for some CSX blue touch-up paint; and the second ASRX Domino Sugar is in-progress. I also got some paint splashed around in the RR room and dabbled yet again in my efforts to "finalize" the eventual track plan. The Quaker Oats complex is giving me fits... I'm thinking more and more of it will be on the background than I'd originally wanted.
KEITH: Rerun was a bit...miffed...to say the least THAT you would confuse him with Missy! He said to tell you, THAT even though he checked into the Doggy Hospital as a pup and ended up leaving some "baggage" behind... he is very much a "HE."
CUDA KEN: Been meaning to tell you, Rerun thinks Tiff is a cutie too! We're both glad she seems to be feeling better!
