We were talking about moving to Canada for August. It's hot here.

Der... I saw the video you posted alread. I hope others like it too. Since it's German, Ulrich may be interested. Alos, Der, the photo of the Nashville and Eastern train is familiar to me. My in-law's house is only about 1/4 mile from teh N&E track.

Thanks Ulrich .  Someone please tell Vinnie it is a federal offense to hit/beat me. I'm 74 . I will try to visit more often as as Vinnie cools it.   We take grandson back to his dad tomorrow. He is a trip. Loves to watch Thomas The Train and friends on tv. Then its The Wiggles and he dances with them. Runs , does not walk.    Monday I get back to work. Need to as this hernia has put us in a deep hole. Could be worse.   Duke thanks for the pics. How did you get so lucky with that CFO of yours?  Ride safe, rubber side down.

Prayers and blessings to all.

Yawwwn, glad Vinnie didn't notice me sleeping upon departure. The rhythm of the rails kept me sound asleep, too. So, where is this place? Ahh, smell the coffee maker already at work. I'll have a decaf in a   SOUTHERN  mug, please.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

 Evenin'........

Whoa!  I knew we had talked about moving to Canada for the month of August in hopes it would be a bit cooler, but really!  Moosonee???  Isn't THAT just a bit far out????  Well at least it is on a siding of the Ontario Northland Railway, and has a nice view of the harbor.

What, my passport,  well of course I have my passport with me!  Sheesh!

Flo just a cup of decaf for me this evenin'.  BTW does this mean we all have to have hard eggs, and burned steaks for the month?  I was afraid of THAT.......

Get to do the docent thing again tomorrow for regular hours at the museum, so I best be finding a bunk for the night.

Have a good one!

Hey guys, handbrakes are pinned down, derails are on the tracks and the wheel chocks are locked on, I'd say we are safe.

Well, a family friend got broke into last night. Someone went into his barn, stole Ipod earbuds, but not the ipod, got into the safe and stole some cash, but not a gun that was in there. and some other stuff. We all think that it was some kid who was driving around saying he was an intern selling books. The kid acted funny, but we have 2 large dogs and a bipolar cat. Well, I'm going to check everything and make sure that if the moron comes back around, he ain't getting nothin'

So we're in Moosonee, Ontario for August, eh.... That Ulrich is really terrific with that little GE 44T. Amazing. Any chance we'll see a moose on Moosonee? ... Any beavers out there, too? ... Cool.

"Coffee and a Good Morning to all~"

And a very special morning to you Ulrich.  Its getting late into the evening here,  and I figured you'd be up by now.  As far as the weather,  well its been on the chilly side.  The sun comes out alittle past noon.

The house is all quiet now with the kids and "Buddy" the African Lion Hound gone.  I asked Jeanne,  "Is this what we have to look forward to?.. Grandkids and all?"

That dawg destroyed a few things around the house.  It really upset the whole balance of everyone~

100_1562.jpg picture by Blazzin55

He looked like such an Angel~

Barry you asked If we 'foster animals' or something.  Gheesh.. where would I begin.  Birds, South American Barking Tree Frog, fish (two koi ponds) (Buddy loved it), 3 dogs (not counting Buddy) 5 cats (used to be 6 cats) hamsters, rabbits.  Anything we brought that we could save.  A blind cat, a cat with a broken leg, two abondoned kittens left for dead in a box, snakes and lizards.  Someone asked if a Ridgeback had to have the ridge, no.. and that why I believe the pups were turned into a shelter and a bit young.  It would detract from the litter and then you would/could not command a higher price.

Now as far as my layout goes.. well I'd rather not say much.  How bout one pic?

Didja put up the blue flag/blue light protection as well???? Might also remind the muckety-mucks we'll be occupying this track and not to make any shoves our way...

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood *YAAAAAAAAAAWN!!!!* Mornin'

Sedation please, and thank-you.

Another busy day gathering content for THAT, it was it was. I interviewed a guy who does "Cowboy Action Shooting." Neat guy, really neat bang-bangs and boom-sticks! CoolMischief I also knocked-out a double-feature about the demise of the Iowa City West baseball team at State, and another article THAT THAT thinks she'll need come Monday... gee, THAT's tomorrow...now...THAT means later TODAY I'll have to motate the stuff to Maggie the Creepy Proofreader Girl. ShockAlienBlindfold

TEEN STEAM: If'n I didn't say it before...THAT is a sweet-lookin' H you've got there. Thumbs UpThumbs Up

GALAXY: I haven't seen a medication list like THAT in a few years. Amazingly, I remembered what most of 'em are for. Yeah...you "could" have some "interaction issues" there. Keep a sharp eye on your doc(s) so THAT they keep a sharp eye on you!

DER JOHN: THAT track machine looks like the brain child of a Dr. Seuss fan! Wasn't he one for fanciful machines THAT would do dozens upon dozens of functions??? I wonder what OSHA would think of some of the w**k stations/riding positions on the creation...  Pretty dang cool video, thanks for showin' it!

So...how soon before you think you might have a functional unit scratchbuilt in N-sane Scale???Smile,Wink, & Grin

JIM: You asked about one of the CNW geep pics. The first was shot in '96 post-BORG assimilation, what I call the Chicago and Union Pacific Northwestern days. The shot with all the other locomotives and bright yellow grain hoppers was taken in May, 1988 in Council Bluffs. I spent a week on...welp, I guess you could call it a "walk-about." Had a rough situation at home, so decided to spend time somewhere else. Technically...it was taken "between colleges." I had just been more or less asked to not return to the Morrison Institute of Technology (crappy grades), which was fine with me...I really didn't want to be there, I discovered. Shortly after my return from "the great adventure..." I started at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. An institution of edumacation I eventually wound up teaching at and w**king as a program director for. The Wife is a graphic designer for THAT edumacation institution. Odd how things w**k out sometimes. The CNW/Santa Fe combo was shot in 1993, I was out of school and w**king for a portrait studio. My job was to sit in a tiny little room, in absolute darkness, and crank out 4" x 6" "proof prints" primarily of senior portraits. The ATSF loco in Creston, Iowa was shot on a "vacation day" from Kirkwood in...2002, I believe. Probably during the week my boss MADE me take vacation time. Kirkwood had/has a "use it or lose it" policy, and I had too much time stacked up.

THAT's a problem I haven't had since... "too much vacation time." Heck...I haven't HAD "vacation time" since Christmas break, 2002.  Uh-Oh...I said "Christmas." Gee, I hope I don't get anybody's knickers or panties in a twist...

Long answer, short question, and a feisty/testy streak...wee hours of the morning rambling. Must be time to inspect the eyelids from the inside.

But first... yet another photo.

G'Night...

So we're in Moosonee, Ontario for August, eh.... That Ulrich is really terrific with that little GE 44T. Amazing. Any chance we'll see a moose on Moosonee? ... Any beavers out there, too? ... Cool.

And Porcupine and Lynx and Bobcats and maybe the occasional Black Bear and the occasional Deer as well as an Eastern Cougar----Big Smile

Good Morniing---we had a little tiny dribblebit show up this morning--just enough to make it even more sticky out--supposed to get up to 85F and be humid again.

Anyways, just to catch up with yesterday, Audrey is doing better this morning-she got hit by an inattentive driver dweeb yesterday morning while out taking her morning walk. Guy was paying more attention to his cellphone while driving rather quickly down the street--Audrey tried to get out of the way but the guy swerved right into her, hit her then clobbered a tree--he's getting charged with reckless driving and driving while using a cellphone. Audrey ended up with a sprained lag and a broken wrist out of it--thank goodness it was not worse!!Shock But as I posted on the previous diner this nincumpoop had to use his cellphone while drivingSoapBox which made me go Banged Head He was 56 yr old--thought he knew better----Angry

Welp---got some more w**k today so I better get ready to do dis---

Zoe, I'll have a breakfast bagel as well as my bucket of coffee please---I'll be at the RC for a bit before I toddle off to w**kWhistling

Barry: Sorry to hear about Audrey but glad she came out all right for the most part. In my opinion the guy got off too lightly. The idiot should be tied down over an ant hill!

Good morning. It's 77 and sunny. The high will be 105 and it will be mostly sunny. The heat index will be 112.

Nothing going on today. I'll be staying inside as much as possible today due to the high temps outside. Let's see, stay inside where it's cool or go outside and get roasted? I opt for staying in. Got the GP30's patched yesterday. One for the L&A and the other for Zorin Industries. Any Bond fan should recognize that name from 'A view to a kill', and it's literally a patch over a patch.

Good morning.  I see we have a new place.   Dinner

Well the "potash" sold last night, plus I have a few more selling right now.  So..............That means I need to get the cars packed up.  Maybe I should get back into weathering cars.  Keeps me fresh in it (weathering side), plus the money helps.

Barry.......Sorry about your wife.  I hope she gets better.   People honestly just can't drive anymore.

 Jeff......Good looking engine.

I will pop back in later.  I think the basement is calling me!!

Ditto to the belated happy birthday for Wisconsin Railfan!

I didn't make it in yesterday either. I had driver's ed for 8 hours (have two three hour driving periods tomorrow and tuesday as well), and then we went to my sister's friend's family's lakehouse on Lake Murray. that was FUN. Ate some good food and then went tubing; her dad has a boat with a Chevy 350 in it (named Breaking Dawn because my sister's friend and her mom convinced him to b/c of Twilight lol) and we were tubing behind that. I now want a boat

Jim, I did learn a lot, and some of those lessons I can't apply unless I start over. I expect to reuse all the kits/built ups etc, but as far as the scratchbuilt buildings go, they're down the drain. Which is just as well; I only have one scratchbuilt industry planned, and I have an idea of what I want it to look like, but I'll be doing some research to make it look really awesome.

Barry, that really sucks man. The Mythbusters (and my dad says Car and Driver as well) did tests that showed talking on a cell phone is just as imparing as driving drunk.

Well y'all have a good one, I've gotta leave the diner for church in about 20 minutes, but I'll hang aroudn and see who comes in before I gotta leave

Good Morning. Er, I mean... How's it goin' eh!

Coffee and the MOW breakfast special seems appropriate thank you. Over easy Thanks. Wow it didn't take near as long to get here as I thought it would. Canada's nice. Where are we? Moose Knee? Beautiful spot Ulrich. I see why so many came her in the 60's and 70'sWhistling. Think there's any logging going on around here for Rob to check out?

Well it seems I missed a B-day. Happy B-Day Wisconsin Railfan!

Duke- Nice photos. I've tossed the idea around of one of my tunnel openings to not have a portal. I think I will on one that is more or less difficult to view, but you can see it.

Der- Great video, very interesting.

Say, what's taking so long with my Breakfast?

Barry- Glad to hear Audrey escaped with just minor injuries. Saaaaay, you don't suppose she is terrified of street crossings now do you? I think I see a way to "make" some Model Railroad Money.Mischief

Chris- I was thinking of the "situations" of the workers myself. The guy leaning up against the tie layer with his hands in the machine for the most part, ( just a few feet to the right of the sign saying don't put your hands in the machine) and especially the guys riding on the little seats placing the ..... whatever those things are called. I like the job where you just walk along and straighten the clippy loop things.

Someone mentioned Ant Hill. We don't have to watch out for Fire Ants up here do we? Whew! Good. Hate 'em.

Got the floor laid yesterday in the "Poooowder Room" and the fixtures purchased and today I will grout the floor. And do other things until I can set the fixtures. THAT most likely won't be until Monday or Tuesday due to previous engagements such as w**k.

Ah! My foods here finally. I guess new places always do slow the kitchen down for a little bit right after the move. Getting settled and all......what is this? Hey, my eggs are hard and the steak is burnt! What gives with you guys?

Have a Great Day!!!

Good morning, eh ...

I'll have a Tim Horton's capacino in a CN mug, eh. Also, I'll have a TH original donut, please, eh.

What's that! .?? ??..Yikes! ... I'm a Great Northern fan as well as a CB&Q fan. ...Did you see that GP30?.. I'll cry........  Sob, Sob.  .... Pass the tissues ............

Keith ... That's some neat work you are doing with push pins. You may find it works best to have a transition curve between the straight track and the curve. Layout planners often include a section of track that is changing from straight to curve. I usually have a section with a very wide radius for my transition section before getting to the fully curved track. Doing this helps keep couplers from separating as cars enter curved track.

 Good Afternoon,

fairly hot and sticky outside, as a series of thunderstorms is coming along our way. Not as bad as in July, but bad enough to feel uncomfortable.

Flo, I´ll have a RBF to cool down a liitle, thank you.

Barry - I am glad Audrey is back with you! Yikes, I don´t even want to imagine what could have happened. Using a cell phone while driving is a no no over here, but the fines are not stiff enough to keep people from doing it. I don´t even have one - too expensive. I don´t like cell phones, it is a kind of dog leash in my opinion. You see the guys at the airport, or train station or gas station - I bet more than 90 % of each conversation goes like this "Honey, I am at (fill in location)"...

Keith - that is an awesome "pin parade" you have done there! My colors also! I like blue and yellow, that´s why I like the old ARR paint scheme Big Smile

Today´s been a slow day, just watched some old (and classic) Westerns on TV. Would probably look and sound funny to you guys to see John Wayne speaking German Laugh At least they used the same voice for all of his movies...

Sawyer - I somehow can understand, that your current layout is starting to "bore" you, especially, when you encounter problems running a train. But that new layout you have in mind is not so much different from what you are doing now, so I wonder what you gain by taking your current layout down and building the new one. Would it not be better to try to "beef up" the track and get it running smoothly? I am not against that plan, but I´d just like to invite you to give that some more thought. Actually, I am quite fond of your current layout.

Jeff - Zorin Industries? Wasn´t that one of the bad guys in an old James Bond movie with Sean Connery?

Galaxy - that list of meds you are on is just frightening. Not so long ago, my list would have been as long as yours, but I changed doctors and there is only one little pill left. Took me a while, but I feel much better now.

Well, the RBF is down the hatch now - see you tomorrow!

have a good one!

Barry, I know what you mean. I hate it when people talk on their cell phones while driving. And then those little bluetooth doo hickys, When I drive through New Lenox, I have to do by about 50 of them All in their fancy Lexus, BMW, Mercedes Benz and the occasional Jeep that has never seen mud a day in its life. (Mine can't say that.)

Chris, thanks, My dad actually bought the Farmall from a guy we used to do business with. That was the first purchase he made without telling my mom when he did tell her, he thought he was going to get yelled at, he did because my mom was going to buy it for his 50th birthday. He gave it to me because I was doing all the paint and repair work on it. Now I am the only Farmall guy at my school and the second one within about 20 miles.

Morning all!

FOr those who are looking for the med list everyone is talking about, I decided to remove it and just list what I take meds for instead. Probably nto the best idea to have such a  list posted in an open forum like this so I took it out.

I suggest everyone with medical histories create a FILE FOR LIFE as explained below:

I have an entire page that lists all my medical conditions; Attending Dr.s; surgeries; Medications; allergies and Primary care Physician's info; prefered hospital listing; and emergency contacts on it. Each Dr. gets one when I first see them, or gets one for periodic updates at each visit. I carry one in my wallet, one in my "man purse" bag of goodies I carry, and have one posted on the refridgerator. I got the idea when an ambulance was called when I had pneumonia and couldn't breathe and wound up in the hospital a few years ago. The ambulance people asked if I had a "File For Life" for my refridgerator. WE said no, They gave us one. It had a card to list All the information I have listed above, but I knew my list was too long and changed too often to lock onto a pre-printed card, so I constructed a MS WORD list of my own. The idea with the FILE FOR LIFE is that if the ambulance gets there and you are unconscious, and no one else around, or if someone doesn't know all your history - they have a place to look for your med history! I can't keep track of my own med history as it is long, and certainly couldn't tell you without looking at the bottles what scripts my other half takes, and would have to think about med history there too. SO there is a "chart" for each of us in the FILE FOR LIFE magnetic pouch on the refer.

Well, I have to go lay down, I feel a headache building again.

Strong coffee in a  Burlington Northern  mug, please.

Worked on porch window sills last night. Finished cutting & gluing sheetrock. Next comes metal trim and mud. Sooner I finish that project, the sooner I can take the big bucked of goop down to the train room where I can put it to better additional (more fun) use. Plan on finishing this job this evening.

Have a great day y'all.

Sir Madog

Sawyer - I somehow can understand, that your current layout is starting to "bore" you, especially, when you encounter problems running a train. But that new layout you have in mind is not so much different from what you are doing now, so I wonder what you gain by taking your current layout down and building the new one. Actually, I am quite fond of your current layout.

Ulrich, there are three key things about my new plan vs. my current one. The first is the staging provisions. I have an oval on the layout, but two stubs that can let me stage (with the help of some sector plates) mainline trains and run them. The second is I now have a scene in there I REALLY want to model (well two really): a mainline by a two lane highway and a wood chip loader. The last is expandability. With this hollow core door layout I could make it a peninsula of a larger layout, or build another hollow core door to attach on.

Another advantage of my new plan is the size; since it's smaller (although still an island [:/]) it won't take up as much of my bedroom as the 4x8 does. I also like how the town is positioned in my new one relative to the industries; while one industry is on the outskirts a bit, the other is RIGHT across from the main street shops.

I've learned enough from my current layout's set up; how it's planned, how I operate it, etc etc. While it won't be killed right away (in fact, it may last another year), I want to look ahead to the future and start planning/prepping for that next major layout project.

I was razzing Jeff about his GP30, and I'm gald he takes jokes so well ... uh ... I thought he did...hmmm. ..Jeff, what did you say to Vinnie? ....... Yikes.! ...

Oh never mind. Jeff the engine has "plausible realism"... It's fun to scuzzie some engines.

In this photo, you can see an ex GN Baldwin switcher working with an ex SP Baldwin switcher at the coke ovens. The ore cars on teh upper level track and the coal and coke hoppers are also scuzzied up.

However, my other GN locos are unweathered.

Garry,  I thank you for your comment.  Transition curve?  LOL  .. "Ah yeah~  I guesssss...?

Oh sure yeah.. I got that.  That area in question, well is where I am tying in the long Yard Lead, and I figured those two had to be level in many both ways.  But coming out of that turn the rail is 'uplifted' ever so slightly.

But the actual two mains are different elevations and the newest main has a 'transition' curve?  Well its elvated by tape and layered.

Ok.. here's a pic.. lets see if I can explain what I've been up to.

100_1615.jpg picture by Blazzin55

What you see here.. lol,  is 1 and 1/2 mains.  The newest 'Main number 1' (yellow push pins)  has the outside rail elevated by means of layering tape down in a graduated fashion.  Yeah yeah I know the wrinkles in the tape.  But with this method only a small portion of the cork is not glued down .. so to speak,  and so the wrinkled tape was only on the part I didn't need.  Looks good so far, although the pic really dosen't show how elevated the outside rail is.  I imagine when I lay track down it will show up differently.

Now on 'Main number 2',  It was laid down with an extra layer of 1/8th inch cork to give a different height, and to take away the flatness.  But getting back to main number 2, I laid down the cork and used the 'blue' push pins only on one side of the cork,  so as to 'Furrow' (?) the outside edge.  Well I'm happy with it.. and it sure is a fast approach.  Then again I have read somewhere in here.. where someone has just sanded down the 'inside' edge of the cork.  I'm having fun.  Oops.. gotta go. bye.. sorry for the mis-spelling. Gotta go.

Coffee refill, please.

****Garry, neat scene there!

Finished mudding the 6 window sills. Need to let it dry before applying the second coat. Once that is done (tomorrow), then the rest of that 60+lbs bucket of joint compound (which will be most of itPirate) will be on it's way to the train room. (evil laugh)

Not sure I'm up to working on the future pasture this evening. With temps in the higher 90's today, it took a lot out of me. Well, off to do a quick barn check & feed run, then going to relax.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Evenin" to you all!  how's it goin, eh?

Did a 7 hour stint out at the museum today.  We had a good crowd all day long.  Several people who hadn't been there before, and a bunch with all kinds of questions for me.  No rain, and high in the high 70's so it was quite comfortable as long as you stayed out of the sun.  Even so, I am beat....

Flo, I'll have the fish fry, Atlantic Haddock, eh?  Also will need a Dr. pepper to go along with it.

I'll be back later....

Hey guys

Been working on a circuit for my test track (10' long 1x6 with that is double tracked with a crossover at each end). I got it to where I can cycle from using my Zepher's programming and main leads to using a DC throttle (testing engines that don't have decoders yet). took a while but I got it done. it looks like crap but it works well. I tried monkeying with my working C425's motor to try to get it to quiet up. Well I cleaned it all out and when I went to re-assemble it one of the magnets broke. So I take the brushes and springs out and try the other case. some of it's tabs (holds the housing with the brushes in place) broke. Take the good magnets, but them in the good case, and then re-assemble it. Well it didn't work because one of the wires to the commutator busted. Grab the other one's guts (center part with the shaft) and re-assemble it. It's defienately a bit quieter now, but some of my other locos are quieter. Gears are fine when I tested them with another motor (single-shaft I plucked out of a VCR for this purpose). maybe the motor need replacement.

Didn't bother to go outside and work on the car becaus.e the heat index was 120. Top it off my car doesn't have AC either...

Anyone ever dealt with HogTrainz before? I noticed they had some stuff I needed (Kato HM5s) that I couldn't find elsewhere. Would like to know if there one of those "bad" shops before I go and buy from them

Teen Steam Fan, Nice avatar, lol. I love that one. I hear you on cell phones when driving. I don't ever do it. Yesterday I passed my some lady doing that in a Maserati Grand Turismo (can you say pricy, $118K+ Shock; and she had bags full of designer clothing). Almost sideswiped me because she was veering towards my lane and only had a few inches to spare before veering back.

Wisonsin Railfan, Happy Belated B-day.

Chris, liking the CNW pictures. DId I tell you I had an uncle who was a tracklayer for the CNW around the turn of the last century?

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
