For $80.00 you got crap. That's the old Riv.
Look at the new rivs, new drive & new technology such as the Allegheny for $350.00 and the new FEF-3 Northern for $150.00.

I just said Look.
The question about the Rivs is the new warranty pending the hornby UK tender\buy out that could be closed by year end.

I own both models. The written warranty langauge states a twowarranty service agreement but it has to go back to italy for $21.10

Walthers was or still is?the distributor of Riv products and over rode the FEF-3
Northern warranty.
Should the model fail, it may be return to Walthers within 12 months with the warranty card or to the walthers dealer you purchased from for an exchange
providing they have stock on hand.

That's the question one has to consider. Will they be enough on hand throughout the next 12 months if something were to go wrong.

I'm pleased with the Allegheny & FEF-3

FYI: A quick search of the waltherswebsite turned up that they stock all kind of parts for the FEF: http://www.walthers.com/exec/search?category=&scale=&manu=Rivarossi&item=&keywords=FEF&instock=Q&split=30&Submit=Search

also heisler parts are available and spare motors are TBA , so at least walthers is making some effort to get spare parts available, specialy for the newer models.

As reported here previously, Rivarossi declared bankruptcy and was up for sale. Lima of Italy purchased, or was going to purchase Rivarossi, then they too went bankrupt. Now Hornby of England is negotiating for the purchase of Rivarossi / Lima. Until the dust settles, no one really knows if there will continue to be a Rivarossi and/or Lima product line.

A friend of mine purchased a Rivarossi Heisler. It is a nice looking model, but a drive rod fell off after it had ran for less than 10 feet, and it took him nearly six months to get a replacement screw.

Due to the bankruptcy and buyouts of Rivarossi, even Walthers may not be able to support them in the future. Rivarossi had chosen Walthers as their exclusive U.S. distributor. Who will Hornby choose?

I, too, own quite a few of the older Rivarossi Big Boy (3), Cab Forward (2), Berkshire (2) , and other models, and hope they continue in business so these locomotives won't become totally orphaned.
