Here are some of the forums that offer "items for sale"(segregated link)
Trainorders, Trainboard & Railroad-line.net. Atlas does not.
I have posted on Trainboard & Railroad-line. net. If you wi***o persue the suggestion, no harm in asking an Administrator to consider adding a separate feature.

When you factor in all the other features/links this forum offers
I think this forum is almost at capacity/content considering the amount of time it takes me to connect with a DSL 1.2 meg or a T1 link.

Trains went thru a major software up grade not too long ago and it took a LONG
time to get those improvements on line.

I agree with ironroster that by opening up trades online you will be filling this board into an classified ad instead of a way to comunicate between MRR's. I would assume also the people at Kalmbach would put a stop to this because of liabiltiy reasons. If you have a peice you know someone would like to trade you can do so off the forums. I have done this with a member of this forums (won't mention names) after getting to know him off the forums. Just something to think about.

I don't understand why this forum didn't have a "For Sale" and a "WTB" forum as a choice. Virturally every automotive forum has had at least one forum for this purpose. Of course they all have a part that mentions that it is buyer beware. I only bought from people that had been on the forum for a good amount of time, but I never had one bad experience. I mean its not like they don't already have a buch of forums. What's one more?

If nothing else let us combine it into one thread here in the forum. I agree that we shouldn't fill up this forum with the posts.

I was considering offering a few steam era cars that I have aquired to trade for whatever someone wanted to give me in modern era. Or even just giving them to someone who was new to the hobby. I really don't see the harm in trying to help people out, and avoiding the hassle of selling on ebay or train shows.

My idea is not an ad. Simply a post saying "I am looking for this engine in HO scale", or "I have a C & O caboose that I don't use, anyone interested in it?" This is not intended to be an ad or replace an ad, just a way to trade or obtain items that you want. Sometimes people will not "find" an item they are looking for but someone might just happen to have it and would be willing to part with it.

I have received an email because of this thread asking if I had "such and such". I didn't have it, but now I know someone is interested in it and should I see it somewhere I can email the person and tell him. This is intended simply to help forum members. That is all, it is NOT intended to be an ad or replace an ad. Many forums members wouldn't even do an ad, they would just throw the item away, and this is intended to help people find items they want but might be discountinued and hard to find.

The biggest problem I see, is that the forum gets cluttered up with all the ads. I know you tried to call them something else, but that's what they are. The commercial guys would drown out the hobbyist trying to offload surplus equipment. We already have a few sneaking in "announcements". I say use eBay or one of the other auction sites. I think their set up is cheaper than MR's ads anyway. Some of the train shows like GSMTS have white elephant tables that I always check for good deals (I never sell anything pack rat that I am - I have enough stuff to build layouts in 3 scales). As for wants - we sort of do that when someone posts a "Where can I find...." message.

I think if you read the forum rules, which everyone is supposed to read when they sign up, you will find that such posts are not allowed. Your best course of action might be to contact the forum administrator for clarification.

I remember responding to a similar post a while ago.This is a GREAT idea indeed.I have items that I'm looking for and also have items I may let go.Buying and selling is the most used way of dealing,and eBay is there for this purpose.

But let's say you have an item you'd like to obtain and don't have the cash for it,but in turn have one or more items of interest,then why not work out a trade agreement?

However,I believe that this forum was meant to help model railroaders help other model railroaders in supplying valuable (but free) information,and it does just that...in many ways.So I wouldn't be very pleased to see "endless posts" fueled by back and forth negociations interfered by third and fourth parties,and...guess what?

I sure love the idea and am ALL for it,but would like to see posts like:"Looking for N scale Big Boy-my email adress" or "Would trade N scale UP SD-45-my email",so that all negociating is done on a personal and private basis.Trading only,no cash involved,so that stores and taxmen are kept out of the deal.

Like FP45 wisely stated,there are rotten apples everywhere,and the model railroading community is no exception,so there's always a possibility of being flawed somehow.Since there wouldn't be any ways of making sure that the other party is reliable,one would have to be careful and yet,accept a level of risk anyway.I'd never trade my reputation,even virtual,for a few bucks or any item and would be highly upset to see my virtual name stated as a "rotten apple" on this forum.It is not so for everyone...sadly.For all it's worthed.............

Jim: I once posted a topic real simular to yours...REAL simular! I didn't get flamed but in general everyone offered other suggestions. The most useful to me was to go to the following site for model RRs to post wants or for sale items.

There are people who sell there for a profit and others like us who just have stuff to get rid of or want to buy. This is a good place for this purpose. Check it out, Dan

Neat idea, however, what about "fraud potential"? I know that on E-Bay there is a rating system that shows if a seller is reliable. On this forum, what safeguard would be used?

What I was meaning was not an ad but simply a post in this thread saying . . . "I have a Athearn S P GP38-2 for sale. In like new condition, runs well, make offer." This way a forum member could read the post and send an email to the potential seller and make him an offer.

Another example would be:

I am looking for an Alco RS3 in NYC colors. Any one having such a loco could then email the potential buyer and maybe even send a pic. This would provide the potential buyer with info that he / she could use to make a buying decision.

This would be a no frills post, not an ad at all just letting forum members know that you have something for sale OR desire to buy something OR even trade something.

I am not trying to sidetrack Ebay but just trying to help fellow forum members. If it works, GREAT, if not, well I tried. [;)]

I don't know if this is acceptable here in the forums or not. I don't know if this has ever been done here or not. But here goes.

One of the recent threads talked about throwing away "model" parts or trains, etc.. One of the guys I work with threw away his whole HO railroad, EVERYTHING. He was moving and didn't have room for it anymore. [:(]

I was wonder IF instead of posting something on Ebay why not post about it here. Our forum members are good people who would like the chance to obtain new or used items. If you have something and don't need it why not trade it or give it away. I guess some people would rather just sell the item. But anyway, I know some people will never post it on Ebay and might even just throw it away. I KNOW THAT HAS HAPPENED and it is such a loss as many items will never again be made and are extremely hard to find.

If you are "in the market" for a certain item why not inquire here if anyone in the forums has what you are looking for and would like to sell it or trade it, or even give it away. The same goes for items you might want to trade.

Like I said I don't know if anyone has ever done this and I hope that noone is offended by it. But give our fellow forum members a shot at what you would like to part with.

There are many people who have items but will never post them on EBay. I personally don't really go to other forums and I would wager some of the other forum members don't either. Yes, I know some do, but some don't. It is very time consuming to find a item on EBay anyway. I simple don't have that much free time, do YOU?

These are not intended to be ads, just simple posts in this thread stating that you are looking for such and such an item or that you have such and such and would trade or give it away, or possibly sell it.

NOT AN AD, just a simple statement that you would like to find this or that. Or that you have something and would part with it by trade or such.

This is simply intended to help forum members. Many will not buy, sell, or trade through ebay. I don't have that kind of time. I hope this helps, that is all it is intended to do.
