Loosely, then you might want to consider some narrow gague as well. Main was full of NG in yesteryear. And, as suggested in another reply, you might consider visiting Maine and some of the many train museum's to get some ideas. good luck and have fun. (make sure you take a camera and get lots of photos, good for reference)

Neither CSXT nor NS get anywhere near Maine. The railroads currently operating in Maine are the Bangor and Aroostook, The Canadian American (formerly Canadian Pacific), The St. Lawrence & Atlantic (formerly Canadian National), Maine Central (part of Guilford), Boston and Maine (part of Guilford), short line Maine Coast (ex-Maine Central) and short line Belfast & Moosehead Lake. The B&M has only a few miles in Maine, from the New Hampshire line to Portland. The BAR and CDAC are in deep financial trouble, so there may be changes shortly.

If your looking for railroads which used to run through Maine, there's a few. The MEC (Maine Central), the B&M (Boston And Maine), I beleive Canadian National ran through parts of Maine, not positive. Nowadays, I'm not quite sure, I think the New England Central runs there and possibly CSX and Norfolk. For photos, etc, I would suggest going to your local library, they're almost sure to have something on the B&M or MEC. Also, the Conway Scenic Railroad, which is located in New Hampshire (North Conway) is a tourist type railroad which runs some old B&M, CN, and possibly MEC equipment. They've got some nice color photos on their website (www.conwayscenic.com). I suggest taking a trip up there, it's a nice ride, if your in the area. If you need any help I can dig some stuff out and E-mail it to you. My address is u505.5@mindspring.com, give me a shout. Good luck.

I am finally getting the opportunity to build a new model railroad and I would like to make it based loosely on railroading in Maine. Does any one know of any good sites for information on what railroads ran through there in the past and what railroads run through there currently? I am figuring currently it would be CSX or Norfolk Southern, seeing as how they bought Conrail. I believe Conrail ran that far North, but I am not sure. Any links to sites or books would be greatly appreciated!
