I like the E's in NYC lightning bolt scheme. But if you want something newer, how about an AC4400CW in the NYC Lightning Bolt scheme.

Southern Crescent Limited pulled by a 4-6-2.
Achallenger in the greyhound scheme pulling the Portland Rose. Both sets with heavyweight cars and a REA reefer right behind the tender.

One of the later Zephyr sets with an E5, or anything with DL109s, Erie-Builts, Alco PAs or any EMD E-unit. Love those streamliners - I'm using an Athearn PA in SF warbonnet livery as motive power for my set of Walthers Superliners at the moment. Totally unprototypical, but it looks gorgeous. Hoping to find a powered PB and dummy PA in the same livery to form a typical SF lash-up now. Will have to wait and see what appears on eBay!

I'll take a set of polished Santa Fe Warbonnet F-9's hauling a line of stainless steel dome cars.

Also any of the first articulated Zephyr train sets, pure beauty on rails.

   Have fun with your trains

As it says in Colorado Glory: "If there is a rightful setting in which to view stainless steel passenger cars, it has to be along the snow covered right of way of the Denver & Rio Grande Western." So my vote goes to the single striped F9 A-B-B pulling the California Zephyr or the Rio Grande Zephyr.

An A-B-A lashup of E7s hauling:

The Southern Pacific Daylight (see opening credits on "Adventures of Superman")
The New York Central 20th Century Limited
The Seaboard Coast Line Champion

The E units are First Class beauties![:D][8D] [^][swg]

"I like my Pullman Standards & Budds in Stainless Steel flavors, thank you!"

To me, a Pacific or a Hudson pulling a consist of Pulman green heavy weights with a REA express reefer or two behind the tender. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!!!!!

Well, I can't separate the locomotive and the consist on the great passenger trains... they are a comprehensive unit.

My favorites:

The Burlington Pioneer Zephyr, and the various classic Milwaukee Road Hiawathas, which used an assortment of steam and diesel motive power over the years.

A simple 4-4-0 looks the best, hands down. nothing can match the pure beauty of a flamboyantly painted 4-4-0 pulling an elogantly built and beatifuly painted set of passenger cars behind it.

All but the D&H consist is a dream.

The Union Pacific Grayhound FEF-3 with a matching gray streamliner.
Second, would be an Espee AC-4 with dark green heavyweights.

PS-- Yeah, that GP40X is pretty hard.

Best looking locomotive with a passenger consist
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 4, 2004 9:17 PM
I can't believe I'm saying this, but the best diesel that looks good with a passenger consist is a...........GP40X! There, I said it. I don't know, there's something about a UP GP40X with armor yellow streamliner cars..........
As for steam, the FEF-3 with a solid block of armor yellows. Or maybe the GS4 with a daylight consist? Who knows........
What do you think?
