SD50 Locomotives

Life Like is making a SD50 loco under the Proto 2000 name. Athearn is making one under the Genisis name. So who has the better product?

That's a hard one. I think it would be Life Like. I bought a P2K SD60M and it runs great. I bought a Ready-toRoll (if i'm correct, the engine is R-T-R) engine and it runs great, but LL has the best.

I have four of the Athearn SD50s, they are NOT Genesis, they are Athearnn Ready to Run.
I prefer these to the LifeLike products, because you never know what LL is going to put in the chassis.
The SD60 is fine by itself, but will not run Athearn, Kato, or anything eles. Don't get me wrong, I've got 6 P2K GP30s, and they are fine. The problems are with the SD60s. I also prefer the Kato SD45, because the LL ones, for the Rio Grande, are just tooo dark.
I may pick up an Undec and see what I can do.
But I would buy the Athearn SD50s.

Ditto what Paul said about the Athearn R-T-Rs. I have a pair of the Rio Grande units and they do fine on my coal train with a Tunnel Motor spliced between them.

It also depends on what railroad you are modelling. One of the great features of the Athearn units is the battery box "mail slots" for Chessie, CSX, and Rio Grande units. This is a very distinct feature that has not been offered on plastic models until now.
