Erie Lackawanna! Lets just forget about Big Blue!
But you all need a reality check! Bringing them back now wouldn't bring back everything mentioned. Steam locomotives would still be museum pieces.
And no freight hauler would ever think of running a passenger train- That's why Amtrack was formed, none of the big roads wanted to keep losing money on hauling people!

Jeez! Why the love afair with Conrail?
They were the 80's version of the current day UP, and everyone complains about the UP!
If you knew more of the story, you wouldn't be that impressed with Conrail anymore. Yeah, they ran the trains but they also did a lot to destroy railroading in the northeast.

[B)] I guess nobody cared much for the B & O. Even though it was swallowed up by Chessie in 1963, I still remember those beautiful E's and F's in the blue, gold, and black going by my grandmother's house. I guess that kind of makes me an [8].

Dougal,
Which Erie don't you like, the city or the RR? They are different, as a matter of fact the Erie RR didn't go to Erie PA.
The Erie is an interesting railroad, always an underdog but they kept trying. And talk about some awesome equipment, how about a steam loco bigger than a Big Boy by 150 tons? (Sorry 4884!) They had 'em- the Triplexes, a 2-8-8-8-2. They were built 25 years before the Big Boys, and didn't have the technology available to make them as successful as they could have been. Too bad, one of the tests they did had one pulling a 600+ car train (untill the forced ripped one car apart- too much stress on the cars directly behind the locomotive).

My vote is for the Great Northern. But then, the BNSF new paint scheme is what the GN would look like today.

Actually I think people don't really miss the companies as the paint schemes perhaps these mega roads could keep the fallen flag regional ID by running them in their old areas.

Probably the best we could hope for anyway.

I personally would like to see a Genesis painted in the BNSF Heritage II scheme. Get two of those locos with some superliners painted in a BNSF scheme. I think that would look incredibly cool (somewhat like the old Great Northern). I know it wouldn't be prototypical, but if I had the spare time and talent, I might undergo a task like that.
