Good Afternoon,

John, hope you are ok and don't sustain any damage.

We got our booster shots today. So far no reaction. Glad that is done.

We have freezing drizzle here but the wind is very light. It is supposed to get a lot colder tomorrow with a little snow.

Dave, nice raptor spotting. Most around here are gone except for the Great  Horned owls but we usually just hear them.

I got some good news today. I had a consult with my knee surgeon. He had concluded based on my x-rays that I needed a knee replacement because the cartilage pad was completely gone and my right knee is 'bone on bone'. He assumed that I must be in constant pain but I told him that I only experience momentary pain when I do certain things like getting up from sitting and climbing stairs. I also explained that I have figured out how to minimize that pain to the point where I haven't taken an opioid pain killer in three months. I have mobility problems and I can't stand for very long, but that is all related to damage in my spine for which there is no cure.

The bottom line is that he concluded that doing a knee replacement is not necessary, at least not at this time. I was very happy to hear that! I have learned to live with the momentary pain and it isn't interfering with my quality of life very much (my back is another story!).

I guess this is a case where the cure might have been worse than the disease.

Cheers!!

Dave

Hi Everyone,

Dave:  without starting an argument and based solely on the information given, the Home Depot designer actually gave you good advice.  She was correct that there needs to be from 1" to 1 1/2" clearance on the sides of cabinets adjacent to a wall.  You were upset that you lost 15% storage space, but think of how upset you will be if you put a 30 in there and you can't open the doors enough to let the roll out trays extend.  Since you're dealing in stock cabinet widths, your choice is 27" or 30".  You could reclaim much of that lost space IF you were to get a more customizable cabinet; however, the price will go up dramatically.  Please note:  Cabinets that are customizable in width will require that you order the larger size and have the company cut it down to the desired width.  All of that costs extra.

I get it!  It's very frustrating.  But, it sounds to me like your designer knows what she's doing and will best advise you according to the price point of the cabinet you're dealing with.  If I'm all wet, then I'll stand corrected.

Anyway, I hope it all works out for you.

Less is more,...more or less!

Lion bought cabinets for his nurses' station and infirmary office. I went to a custom manufacturer in the next town over. Everything was made to my specs albeit from sizes in their catalogue. Fit Purrfectly. They make all kinds of custom cabinetry, reception desks and the like. They manufacture for companies all over the country.

I did look at Menards, but this worked better for us. Very professional looking!

Lion,  today's Final Jeopardy answer was "North Dakota", and no one got it right.  (I did, because of the National Park.)

Hi Jim,

I used to follow that rule in the past (I have designed a few kitchens). However, hinge technology has advanced considerably. The hinges on my new pantry are truly 'zero clearance' hinges. When the door opens they do not swing wide of the side panel of the cabinet. They stay almost perfectly aligned with it throughout the whole swing. At most a clearance of 1/4" might be required. I'm not guessing at this. I carefully examined the way the doors operate and the old clearance rules do not apply. I have done enough kitchen design and cabinet work to recognize the change.

One possible issue was that the handles might restrict the swing of the door enough to prevent the trays from rolling out. That is not an issue in my case because there is an opening (doorway) in the adjacent wall which would allow the handles to swing into it.

Actually, it has all become a moot point. I went over my measurements again and while I could make a 30" cabinet fit in the space if I was doing the work, it would be very tight. I would still have enough clearance for the fridge which is beside the pantry but asking an installer to work within those tight tolerances would be an invitation for trouble. For that reason I have decided to make life easy for everyone and drop my request for the cabinet to be replaced. I'm still a little miffed that maximum use is not being made of the space but I can live with it.

Thanks for your interest,

Dave

John (York1), hope you made it through the wind okay!  We had a few tree limbs down, but otherwise appear to be fine (based on what I could see when I left this morning.  Hopefully that's correct).  My neighbor has a fence between her yard and my driveway that had a panel come down.  As she is recently widowed, I'm planning on fixing it for her.  No sense for her to pay a handyman and wait when I can fix it quickly.

Training sessions I'm administering at work are going smoothly so far.  So much better than the ones I had to do in the spring where we were making a bunch of changes and people were still fired up about an incident that happened 8 months earlier.

Janie, can I get a spiced apple cider to go please?

Later guys.

Would you believe mid 60s today?  For this time of year, that's even warm for Delaware.

Back in days of yore, we were on a cruise (remember those?) and our flight home was cancelled because our "local" airport, Dulles in DC, about a three hour drive, was having a Snowmageddon and we actually got stranded in St. Martin for a day.  When I see the frequent news stories of people stuck for days in airport terminals in places like Newark, I think back on how it could be.  We were literally "stranded" on a tropical island in a hotel right on the beach with a charming French restaurant on the patio.

Good morning, diners.  Bacon, eggs, and black coffee, please.

We weathered the storms OK.  Last year a storm took out a lot of branches, so I think the branches that are left are the strong ones.  An airport a short distance from us had a wind gust of 95 mph, so I think we dodged a bullet.  There were several tornado reports, but no damage.  Out here, a tornado can travel on the ground for miles and not hit anything.  Not a whole lot of people living in our area!

One great thing about the wind, someone else now has all the leaves that were still hanging around my yard.  My yard is clean!

I know that sound seems to travel better in cold air.  The past cold mornings that I have walked, I've been able to hear and know exactly where the BNSF trains are, even though the tracks are three miles away.  I can here the wheel sounds change as they hit crossings.

It was good to hear from Lion again!  Hopefully, Kevin will be able check in soon.   It'd be nice to have a full diner one of these days.

Have a great day, everyone.

So that's where those came from!  My yard (and those around mine) has been clean and I had a small mountain in front of the garage this morning.  No joke.  Probably two feet high, five or six feet wide, and 12-14 feet long.  I had no idea where they came from until now.  Thanks a lot John. Laugh  Seriously though, glad to hear you are okay.

Before the storm, I wrote my name on all my leaves.  If those in front of your garage don't have a name written on them, they ain't mine!

Good Morning Fellas.  Happy Friday.  Janie, steak and eggs please.  Extra eggs.  Over easy.

Today is going to be tough.  I have to stay over at work about 4 hours to do some training that will take all of about an hour and a half total to run two sessions.  Plus, I've already given 6 sessions of it, so the two tonight are going to feel like awful re-runs.  That on top of taking 2 weeks off after today is going to make it REALLY difficult to drum up much motivation for work today.  Wish me luck.

Got a better chance to assess the wind damage from last night.  Not too bad.  Numerous small branches & twigs out of one maple tree that drops branches if you look at it funny, one bigger branch out of a large blue spruce, and 5 fence posts that broke.  The fence posts don't surprise me.  My backyard fence is old and I've had a number of the posts rot and break just below ground level already.  I've been planning on replacing posts when the day comes that I have to replace the fence, but at the rate its going, I'll have all the posts replaced before then.  Oh well.

Good morning, everyone.  It's a crisp morning out there today, but it's supposed to get up to 42°F today.  Heat wave.

Ed, that's a neat building and a great sign you've got in your yard.  You have made you place a pretty amazing site.

Mike, I hope your day at work goes quickly.  The day before vacation can seem to drag along.

David, it sounds like a fun weekend with your granddaughter visiting.  Your video of the Christmas layout was interesting.  The video said it was an HO layout, but I thought several of the trains looked like two different scales.  It was probably my imagination or the camera angle.

MisterBeasley, that sounds like you had the luckiest place to be if you have airline problems.  I got to see the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry when I got stuck in Chicago by a train ticket problem.

Out on the prairie, I'll have another day inside, so I can almost finish my scratchbuilt house for the layout.

Farming out here for many years meant daily chores even through the winter -- feeding animals, milking, repairing fencelines, etc.  Now, most of the farmers out here have one thing -- growing corn.  Once the harvest is in, the hard work slacks off.  My farmer friends still have work to do, but winter seems to be a time of relaxing work and slower schedules.

Kansas City's Union Station is a great place to visit around Christmas.  They really have great displays, and the best part is that they are still a passenger station, with Amtrak riders coming and going.  It's a wonderful time of year there:

Have a good Friday, everyone.  For those of you who are still working in the rat race, save your money.  Retirement is great!

Good morning all, it is 0c and we just had a spectacular sunrise and I am on my 2nd cup of coffee.

Had a bizzzzzzzy day yesterday logging lots of kms in the Toyota. That thing is an absolute pleasure to drive with its automation. It is a Hybrid and I averaged         5.5 ltrs/100km through the day.

The daughters' exams in house were canceled due to covid so that means she can write online from home. She was on the ferry as soon as she got that news and we went to pick her up as part of our long day. She came into the house and lifted the top on the grand piano and the house was filled with beautiful music perfectly played. It was the best. We won't see much of her as she still has two exams left and she will be hitting the books until they are done.

My wife is going out today to run errands so I will have to get wrapping while she is gone. We don't usually get much for each other but this year I have been accumulating things throughout the year and have been trying to remember where I hid it all. I came across two Golden Retriever art pieces that she always loved but had sold out quickly. I wrote a friend back East to keep a lookout for them and a few months later she contacted my sister to say she found them both. I had them shipped out and with all the other trinkets I picked up she will be spoiled this year. My wife is a blue jeans and sweatshirt farm girl type that does not like jewelry or other frilly stuff which is probably why I love her so much.Laugh

For those of you who are still working in the rat race, save your money.  Retirement is great!

Retirement is great. When I was young my Dad said something to me that stuck. He said he couldn't understand why people planned to cut back in retirement. His thinking was you needed more money in retirement because you were not working and had to have lots of money to travel and enjoy yourself. He planned accordingly. The first brand new car he ever bought was a week after he retired and he bought two more brand new cars after that and traveled a lot. He said he wasn't spending big bucks on a new car just to drive it back and forth to work.Laugh

I think I was in grade nine when I bought my first stock with money from returning shopping carts at Safeway. It was a $148.00 investment if I remember correctly. My parents had to open my trading account for me. 51 years later with regular contributions and some self-education through reading some of the driest books ever the result has been astounding. So make sure you get that high school education.Laugh

My son asked me to dig his hockey gear out and go with him to a hockey event in Vancouver. He played in a game and then there was this huge social afterward where he was named to the board of directors of a large hockey organization. It is not a professional organization but is closely associated with Hockey Canada and it is a pretty big honour for him to serve. Two days after that he sent me a copy of an e-mail he got from a really high-profile Canadian business tycoon that wants to take him to lunch. He said he was so impressed with my son's work for the Federal Government on the covid file that he would like to have a sit-down. I smell a good job offering coming, but I am not sure it is the direction the kid wants to go in.

Last week the kid took a week off work which is really unusual and went out of town and was staying in a really nice hotel. There was even a big fireplace in the bathroom.Laugh It turned out it was for some movie work which he has been dying to do more of. We know nothing as it had a very strict NDA associated with it, so we will see at some point I guess. I laughed finding out this is how he spends his vacation as the movie thing is exhausting work.Laugh

Well, lots to do today but it is all at home so I might get some train time in.Big Smile

John  Back when Hugh Downs was on the Today Show, he had the Admiral who captured the Uboat in the Chicago museum.  I always wanted to see it, but have never been to Chitown and the way things are going there, never will.

I found a semi-decent train store about an hour away in Charlottesville.  Unfortunately, I was in town to see about getting a shoulder replacement. A rotator cuff tear that you don't get fixed eventually destroys your shoulder.

Fortunately, there was a cancellation for the middle of next month, rather than the end of March.  Hopefully the omnivirus won't shut down elective surgery again.

Doctors aren't shy about asking deeply personal questions your sex life, elimination activities and drugs and alcohol but no one wanted to know if I was vaccinated, only if I was recently sick or diagnosed with C.  My wife and I are supposed to quarantine 2 weeks before surgery and I need a negative test, not more than 7 days before surgery.

Recovery will be 3 months and 6 weeks in one of those slings that keep your arm pressed into your belly.

I forgot, this is a tearjerker video, nothing to do with MR, but most of us are at a certain age.

Henry, I went to the Museum under protest.

My wife, three daughters, and I arrived on the City of New Orleans too late to catch the connecting California Zephyr.  Amtrak paid for our hotel room, and we had a day to spend in Chicago.  I wanted to go to the Field Museum of Natural History, but I was overruled.

I was happy because the Science and Industry museum was a great way to spend the day with my young children.  They would have not enjoyed a whole day at the Field Museum.  The museum had a great model railroad display.  This was over 30 years ago, so I have no idea what it is like now.

That Chevy commercial is a great one.  It's too bad that it's so long, most people won't see the full film.

Good evening. Wow, two posts in one day for me. POST HOG!!!! Where's TF?

The snow is gently falling outside and my wife brought home some really good Scotch and I am just enjoying the moment.

Ed, I forgot in my haste to mention your depot and sign are just really cool. I wish I had property the lent itself to such projects.

Fergie, good to see you back. The young lady next door has applied to go into the Coast Guard and has been accepted. She has always been a little hellion of a kid but has grown into a wonderful young lady. A real tomboy, that is now drop-dead gorgeous. I think it is a good career choice for her.

I have been to the Chicago museum of science and industry two or three times and have loved it, well worth the visit. I have been to Chicago many times as I have good friends there.

Henry, I hope your shoulder replacement goes well. I think I will be getting the same down the road. I already had one shoulder surgery that totally relieved the pain I had, but I think next time it will be a joint replacement. I also think a new left knee is in my future. Back when I was young the sports medicine Doctor told me my radical skiing would mean a knee replacement at some point. At 65 I think I can see it on the horizon.

Mike, I well know working as Christmas approaches can be interesting. I always worked a lot at Christmas even though it was generally quiet for us as all the Government was shut down and gone home and not demanding miracles in transportation logistics. I would work a lot so the married guys could get time with their families. I was at the airport and would wander around the terminal spending a lot of time at Tim Hortons drinking coffee with the staff, customs officers, and RCMP members through the night and Christmas day. I would usually pull a thirty-hour shift and then go to my sisters for Christmas dinner and then go to bed for a long sleep. Good memories.

It looks like our big Christmas gathering is no more with this recent outbreak. With so many health professionals in the family, the discussion as to whether we should have it or not was long underway before the Government issued its edict. Stupid is as stupid does. Missing a second Christmas together is better than missing a dead family member. Now what to do with all the food and the huge turkey?

I went outside briefly and the silence hurt my ears, I love it. I will take the dogs out for a walk through the snow and enjoy feeling like the only living thing on Earth. Come in poor a last snort of this high-end Scotch play this song on the guitar as I always have to do when it snows and hit the rack.

All the best to all.

Brent!  You're a Post HogLaugh  I've been planted on the back burner trying to finish bridge #7 of the 8.  It was supposed to be the easiest one and should have been.  I know one must use a good sealer on all 6 sides of a masonite deck and let it dry thoroughly before gluing it down to the base.  I thought because it was such a small deck...........I thought wrong and it warped! Tongue Tied

All Gordon's songs are gold.  I don't have any that I don't like, just ones that are more favorites than others.  If you would have had invited me up for a snort of that Fine Scotch while listening to Gordon last night, you would have known where I wasLaugh

Over here, when one hobby thrives, the other gets neglected.  I noticed the bass guitar needs a good dusting.  I have a case for it but I like the way it looks out in the open.  Maybe I should play it once in awhile so I dont have to dust it offWhistling

I'm hopeful things are starting to get better up there after all that terrible flash flooding you had.  I'm sure things will take a long time to get back to normal.

Judy and I used to go to Chicago every year at the tail end of winter.  One time we took Amtrak there and back with coupons from Wheaties cereal boxes.  Well, ...We ate more Wheaties that week before we leftLaugh  That was certainly an inexpensive way to travel and you don't come across deals like that anymore.  Haven't been there in years.

I like the Depot and the Sign you made EdYes  What a neat place to go for a little modeling solitude.

The house model is turning out great John.  Nice job on the roofYes  That'll look good next to the church.

I remember my favorite Pastor Paul.  He used to go on camping trips with our Brigades church group.  His house was right next to the church.  Us kids used to go over and visit him as he was such a cool down-to-earth type of guy that always showed an interest in what we were doing.

I hope your shoulder surgery goes well Henry.  I've been in and out of trouble with my rotary cuff.  I think it was from lifting the table saw and power miter saw straight over the truck bed all those years when I was youngerIndifferent  A lot of us guys thought we were really Macho and Tuff when we were young, never realizing we were just being stupid tearing up our joints.

I told my knee surgeon once, "My shoulder hurts when I do this".  His professional reply was "Don't do that anymore!"Laugh

I hope Kevin can somehow find his way back to the forum soon.  He is missed around here.

Have a great day gentlemanSmile, Wink & Grin

For Judy's day off we are making freezer bag omelets because they always turn out so good.  Chive sour cream in the eggs, bacon, pepper jack and colby cheesesDinner

Lazy Man's breakfast but it has to be a BPA free freezer bag and then you just drop them in boiling water till thier done.  Effortless!

Bon appetitStick out tongue

I'll make an extra one for you if you'd likeSmile, Wink & Grin

Good morning, everyone.  TF, I'll take one of those omelets (omelettes?), please.

I was always a good speller, but lately I will write something and the words don't look correct.  I'm second-guessing my spellings.  Then when I correct something, the new way doesn't look correct either.  I guess an advantage of getting old is that age can be blamed for a lot of things.

We're hitting the road in a couple of minutes, off to see family again.  It's snowing very lightly, but it's not anything that will cause problems.

I'll check back in on the diner when we get to the destination.

A big part of Christmas around here is the music of Omaha's Mannheim Steamroller.  They usually tour this time of year, but come home to Nebraska for their last Christmas concerts.  Their style of Christmas music in not liked by everyone, but I love it.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Kevin, come back as soon as you can.

I asked my doctor if I gave up delicious food and all alcohol, would I live longer?  He said, "No, but it will seem longer."
