I had to go to the Credit Union this morning to make a deposit and then stop at the Natural Foods store to get my month's supply of coffee.... I will have to go back out to buy fossilized dinosaur gunk for the PiP later. I lack about 10 miles of getting out to the Museum and back home tomorrow without the car yelling at me for being low on the stuff. I could probably do it with no problem, but why take a chance....
Last night I had 3 blooms on the Night Blooming Cereus. House smelled nice! Since the temperature was in the low 40's I had the wood stove fired up. This is about the earliest I have lit it.
I think I shall spend some quality time in the layout rooms today.....

My best wishes for a successful recovery. Speedy, too, but "success" is more important than "speed." It's another one of those lessons from model building that carry forward to the rest of life as well.

My foot is still swollen and started to hurt, but although I spent most of the afternoon on the sofa giving the dang thing a rest, I was able to do some more research - and I have come to a conclusion!
I am not going down the Z route! The key reason is that Z scale is still very much a Marklin proprietary scale, making one dependant on MArklin´s pricing policy, which is out of this world. Accessories are also few and expensive, making this scale an exclusive venue for the rich and not for poor chaps like me.
Ulrich has decided to go N scale!
I was just about to order a Marklin Z scale starter set, consisting of a little electric loco, a string of passenger cars, an oval of track with a passing siding and a spur,and a powerpack, when I got these second thoughts of value for money. Well, to cut things short, I ordered something else - a Trix N scale digital starter set, consisting of just about the same things as the Marklin set, but with a digital command station. The cost is less (!) than the Marklin set and I feel I got a good deal on it with a sales price 35% below MSRP and free shipping. It should arrive at my doorstep by mid of next week. Can hardly wait for it to arrive!
While doing more research, I found out, that N scale does not really need more space than Z scale. Part of this is owed to Marklin´s strange track geometry, resulting in a fairly large distance between two parallel tracks. In Z scale, that distance is 25mm and in N scale it´s a mere 1.5mm more. I was able to convert the Z scale plan I made this morning quite easily into N scale. It´ll be just a two track oval and a station, onlythe station part to be visible to hide those sharp curves. I will post the plan when I have detailed it.
I am sure I won´t be using the Trix track provided with the set, but use Peco code 55 track instead. The Peco track is actually cheaper anew than the used Marklin track! But as long as I won´t be starting on the construction of the layout, I can use the Trix track to be set up on a table an run a train!
Ulrich is back in business of model railroading! Feels good and I am much happier now. Petra is also happy that the big layout is gone! The new one will be a lot less intrusive!

That is great.
Will you be able to seek a more handicapped friendly independent living situation that is income based? Here we have Senior housing/handicapped housing that operates that way, is fully wheelchair accessible, one to two BRs, and the like.
MOH and I are thinking of seeking it out as a housing alternative for us if any is available as soon as I turn the double nickle, MOH already quilifies, but I lag by 4 years...
How about a vets home for you? They may not bet the best, but they may work, may not.

Furnace Good news is it is working again! Bad news is it was working when the repair guy showed up? All he did was to have the wife turn it up to 80 and it started? He cleaned a lot of things that had not been done for years and it is working fine. He olny charged me $75.00 so I get to keep the B&O GP 30. Hope to have it on the rails in the next few days.

This took place Saturday at the North American Wife Carrying Championships at Sunday River in Maine. (Marriage is not a requirement, although a team must be one male and one female, and both must be over 21.) The teams run over an obstiacle course almost 300 years long, including hills, log barricades, a sand trap and this pool of water.
The winners get 5 times the "wife's" weight in dollars, and they put her on a balance beam and add beer to the other side until it's level. This year, it was Shock Top ale.
Annie and Rich above placed eighth. And, don't underestimate the importance of this event. The winner qualifies for the World Championships in Finland. And, I took this picture from Reuters.

I am late today, but I have been really busy today! Aside from my regular weekend duties, I spend quite some time at my old `puter w*rking on that layout idea of mine. It´s not yet finished, but here is a sneak preview:
The layout will show a scene located in northern Switzerland - the region bordering Germany. There will be these typical gingerbread houses and vinyards - those of you having been to that area know what I mean. There is more w*rk to be done on the plan, but I´ll postpone that to a time after I have received my new trains - if I get them. The vendor I put my order in cancelled the order - "out of stock". I now have to reclaim my money (I always have to prepay my orders due to my low credit rating) from him, plus a damage, as I will have to py more now. I am entitled to damage redemption, as he had previously confirmed my order!
Jeff - I am glad to see you are dropping by - Petra and I keep you in our prayers!
Ken - I still have the old Japanese N scale, stored in my attic, but I won´t be able to mix it with my "new" N scale layout.

This was another nice weekend of railfanning. We had to sit in the car because it was just a little to chilly with the breeze for the wife, but that's no big deal. Saturday we caught 11 trains in 3 hours. 1 coal, 2 mixed freights, 2 crude oil, 2 intermodal, 2 road railers, 1 auto racks, & 2 engines running light. The neat thing for me was Norfolk Southern's "Interstate" heritage unit, which was leading on an auto rack. I've seen all of them but 2 now. I still need to catch the "Conrail" & the "Lackawanna".
This morning we headed over to CSX where we caught 1 mixed freight & 1 auto rack. Once again I got lucky as the mixed freight had 5 engines with the trailing unit a CSX Genset. This is the 1st time I've actually seen one.
Then we went back to NS for about an hour & caught 5 more trains. 3 intermodals, 1 auto rack, 1 mixed freight & 1 slab train.
I finally finished putting up the wife's Dept 56 "Halloween Village". Thought it would have been done earlier in the week, but got hit with a heck of a cold. So I didn't get as much accomplished this week as I had hoped. Anyway, I'm glad that project is done. Now when that display comes down, it will be time to put up "Dicken's Village" for the Christmas holidays. Boy, that's a lot of trips up & down the stairs from the first floor to the attic. Wish this old house had a dumbwaiter. It would make things a lot easier. Anyway, that's about it from the "Burgh". Have a great week & stay safe.

Oh man! What a day out at the museum. we were all run ragged. Our average run today was close to 50 people per run. The largest r8un was 61 passenegers on board. They say they can only fit 60 passengers on the trolly... They got 61 on there today. The last run was 6 people and that was the only run under 37 passengers! I didn't even get a lunch break. On the other hand a day like today really helps to pay the bills out there, but my back is crying out in pain at the moment. Our first trip had 57 people on board most of which were eldery handicapted people. About 8 had walkers they were trying to navigate over the ballast rocks to get to the cabooses. We got them on board but ended up about 10+ minutes late on the next run. Took us all afternoon to get back on schedule, and I was not a help as with the crowds getting everything set on nthe cdabbose so we could make the trips was a problem to say the least. Went from the Assisted living folks to lots and lots of kids who didn't want to behave well. Interesting day to say the least!
Last night right before bedtime I found out that our Fall Foliage Rare Milage Excursions are completely sold out! We will be making 4 completely sold out trips from Lakeville, NY to Industry (the Depot) next Saturday. I will be a car host (Car Conductor for the trips.) Then Next Sunday I will be back on board Erie Caboose C-254 as Car Host for our normal Sunday operations.
Jeffrey, hope you are behaving yourself with those nurses!
Oh.... Second week in a row that one of my students from way back when was out at the museum. This time it was not only one of my favorite students but one of my Eagle Scouts!!! He is now working at an industry that supplies equipment to factories in the Rochester, NY area. I did make some time to chat with him going up to the trolley connection!

Like Tom I have alos been hot with a nasty cold. Made it through work this week ( somehow ) but know I have the crappy dry cough. Along with a sore throat.
Mange to get a couple peoples grass today and that might be it for the year. I will have to wait and see how things grow.

Shoot My Self In The Foot Diet Wise. I am on a low carb diet and been eating a lot of Sausages that I thought where 1.5 carb's per link. I have no idea how I came up with that figuer? Other day at the suepermarket I reread the package, they are 7 grams of carb's each! So where I was recording I had 3 of them for 4.5 carbs, I was eating 21 carb's!
Ulrich I was wondering because of the track. Guess you just got tired of the Japanes theam.

Train Front Layout is busy tonight running 4 trains. Layout looks like dog poop, but it sure works well. Opned up the new B&O GP 30 and got ready to install the decoder, it is a plug in 8 pin. But the PC looks odd, so I am leavening it a lone for now till I feel like reading the instructions.

Ken, it's about 7 inches long. It's a 50' coal hopper. If the B&O GP30 is a Proto 2000, it's best to change the light bulbs to LEDs with a reistor and use any decoder that fits. A digitrax DH163L0 or a DH165L0 will let you keep the lights though.

Got the message, that my order of that Minitrix starter set has been shipped - hooray! Should be with me by Wednesday.
I started a dialogue with that Swiss model railroading pal of mine. I mailed him my preliminary idea of the layout and he came bck with a few great ideas, which I now have to w*rk into the plan. I will also shorten it by 8", as I still have a HCD in my attic, which I plan to use. Makes building the benchwork a lot easier and, which is more important - cheaper!
Otherwise - no news, which is good news in my case!

Ken - Wow that guy cut you a break. Around here they charge $150 just to get in the truck and then they charge by the qaurter hour plus outrage upcharges on the equipment. My last furnace trip coast $300 and they diagnosed teh problem wrong !
Galxy - loved the Audrey Hepburn qoute. Always like her. John Lennon qoute - everyone is entitled to there opinion. I just find his offensive. But that is America. I wished all could be as tolerant as others. Some of the tolerant crowd are very intolerant- generally speaking.
train front - Bought more from an estate from a member of the James River division member. Purchased a 2664,2-2882, two Js, two Ms,482, dynometer car and later this week will receive 15 broadway limited hoppers. Spent Way TO MUCH but this is a once in a lifetime oppurtunity and it is going to help pay for the NMRA members nursing fees which are 8k a month.
My daughter goes back in on the 24th for her MRI reads ( please pray for no major issues ) and tomorrow she gets fitted for her hearing aid. All else is good. We are hunting for a bigger house hopefully one with a BIG bsmnt for the future N&W extension and married life is good.
