A DT602 throttle will get you to the same type of throttle that is on the DCS52. While I also like WIFI throttles and yes they are cheaper than a DT602, they will not program and make changes to your command station. A full feature throttle will. Now those changes can also be accomplished with a computer connected via a PR4 or Locobuffer but that is not the same as a WIFI throttle.

I have a Zephyr, same age as yours. I bought the Wifi system to operate my logos from my cell. Works beautifully. No wires, MUs are a cinch. Way cheaper than a new throttle too.

I have found Digitrax method of mu'ing diesels isn't easy for me to remember after buying the Digitrax Chief years ago and adding a DT402D throttle about 6 years ago.
Since then Digitrax came out with the DT502 and now the 602 so I decided to get off the Digitrax throttle upgrade merry go round and get a TCS UWT100 wifi throttle and the Digitrax LWNI wifi adaptor. That way I can used the TCS throttle via wifi and not have to used the Digitrax throttles at all. The UTW100 is much more intuitive to use.

There is a video at the bottom of the page in the link where they describe it. TCS is also coming out with a smaller UTW50 throttle this fall/winter. I have ordered both, but am working getting track laid before I can play much with mine.

If you have a small layout, small enough you only need one plug in location, if the Zephyr is located near center, you could simply plug into the back of the Zephyr.
Otherwise, a utility panel will give a finished appearance to the facia.
If you have the crimpers, you can easily make your own LocoNet cables from RJ6 connectors and 6 wire telephone wire. (Do not try to use any straight from the package telephone cable - It is not properly crimped for LocoNet/Data purposes. It will give you some wacko performance issues.... If you recrimp it, it will work.)
But until I upgraded to a newer Digitrax system, I used the DT402, then the DT502, with my Zephyr. And plugged right into the back of the Zephyr, as my small layout had it located close enough to center that I could walk around without unplugging it.

Yes, it will work with the Zephyr. You'll need a ultility panel and some LocoNet cables to go with it. You could even get the radio equipped panel and throttle if you wished.
