High Voltage ??
Posted by Erie-diamond on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 12:57 PM

I have Peco turnouts and just purchase Peco switch machines. They say to use 16 volts to power them. I'm building a DDC layout and thought I would use the accessory side of DC power pack. My question is that the output of the power pack is 18 volts will this harm the 16 volt switch machines?

No problem. The voltage on those power packs is the unloaded voltage.

Slightly higher voltage will operate the coils faster. Never hold down the button if the turnout hangs up. Too easy to burn out the coil if the button is held down. Has happened to many over the years.

No a problem using the Snapper or any CDU though.

Get a Circuitron Snapper for positive operation.

If you ever fall over in public, pick yourself up and say “sorry it’s been a while since I inhabited a body.” And just walk away.

When I bought the switch machines I also bought the Peco capacitor discharge unit. Wasn't sure if it was safe to use with that 18 volt supply, but I understand it will. Thanks for your help, Ken
