MTH HO DCS using the DCS Commander
Posted by john in georgetown on Friday, December 11, 2015 12:17 PM

Can anyone tell me If I need to order an AIU if I am planning on using switches.  I understand That I do not need to have a TIU when using the Commander with 100 Watt Power Brick.

Thanks ---John

If you want to use your throttle to control switches, yes you need an AIU.  I am not familiar with the DCS commander, so I dont know if it works with an AIU or if you need a TIU to connect to your AIU.  The old 150W controller was not compatible with the AIU, or it wasnt user friendly, so I bought a TIU.  If you want to use another means of controlling switches, no you dont need an AIU.

Alternatively:

For the less than the price of an AIU and TIU together you can get a DCC system.  Instead of investing in advanced DCS equipment (for which there is only one manufacturer, because it is a proprietary system), get a DCC system.  Newer MTH locomotives will run on DCC, and the best part is: many other companies make DCC equipment, so you have options.  Running the pass through DCC function is not adviseable (take a look at the DC+DCC+DCS thread).
