For headlights, you probably want 3mm "golden white" or "yellow white" LEDs.  I've got a number of these, and I really like them.  The color is very appealing for my transition-era engines.

I've used small flat-panel red LEDs for tail lights.  These are about 1mm across.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Are there LEDs that looks like incandescent light bulbs? What size LEDs do I need for general HO scale coachs for head and tail lights?
