very interesting, thanks !
A lot of raifans make my blood run cold.. They park their lawn chair or car way to close to the tracks or as in two cases, one set their tripod in the gauge of the second main to film 765 as she rolls by and the second did the same at Marion to film a passing Westbound CR train. This time a East bound CR train was blowing for the Rt.309 crossing just to the West of the Marion Station.Way to close for comfort especially since this "serious" railfan was filming complete trains.. We finally got his attention and pointed toward the West. I never seen anybody move as fast as he did when he saw the Eastbound's headlights just East of the Rt.309 crossing.

I have been trackside when a hi-rail truck (slowly) pulled welded rail past me. And yes there were some projectiles. I give trains a wide berth when I railfan, but I give MOW trains an even wider berth. Ballast cars with side unloading -- there is a good reason the track workers all wear steel toed shoes! And a rail grinder emits all manner of vile particles and smoke (and sparks).
A railroader once said to me (more or less in these words) "you know there are da** good reasons you never see railroaders stand as close to the tracks as you da** railfan fellows do. We've seen the loose steel strapping flying in the wind -- that would cut you in half at track speed. And even loose doors on the ends of trailers happen. Loads fly out of gondolas." He also mentioned that he hated to see dads put coins on the rails for the kids, because if the wheel hits that coin just right, it doesn't flatten - it shoots out like a bullet.

No worse than the CSX MOW worker standing there. To me, the CSX guy looked closer for most of the video than the person taking it.

Yeah, but he kind of has to be there.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.

I tried doing that once when picking up rail from an abandoned line. The chain that the M of W people had kept breaking. Maybe they didn't have all of the spikes or rail anchors out.
