Can anyone tell me what Norfolk & Southern SD40-2's are used for? Do they ever go over the road or are they used mostly for local runs or yardwork. thanks

Since I moved to North Carolina, I've been rail fanning the NS "S" line from Salisbury to Asheville. I see a lot of NS SD40-2s in lashups on the manifest freights.
Off topic, but my farm is only a few miles from the Alexander County Railroad. It's a great modern short line. Lots of industrial switching mixed with pastoral rural running. All the power is first generation SW switchers With one painted in Southerns green and gold style.

I beleive that they are still used as helpers over the Horseshoe curve between Altoona and Galitzen, PA.

Replaced by SD40Es a few years ago.
Mostly find SD40-2s on locals and yard jobs. The yards lucky enough to get them try not to ever let them go.
