EMD NW2
Posted by Mike Kieran on Monday, March 5, 2018 12:04 PM

I have a question about Phase 2 EMD NW2 switchers built in 1945.

Would 567A engines be in Phase 2 EMD NW2 switchers built in 1945? In later rebuilding upgrade programs, could they be upgraded to 567ACs and would they get an increase in horsepower?

According to Wiki, yes.  The 567 and the 567A.

I don't know about the AC part.

According to a Great Northern diagram book, their NW2's GN 145-150 had 567A's, and were built 8-9/1945.  I'll leave you to determine the phase.  And whether that info is useful.

This article lists 567 engine models

I plan on doing some detailing of Kato NW2s. My problem with Wikipedia is that the NW2s built for Great Northern showed Phase 3 louvres (no space for lettering). There is some kind of misinformation somewhere, I just don't know where. That's why I posted the question.

OK, since non of us new that from your original post, what about a roster of GN NW2's from rrpicturearchives.  Not sure if this will help you.

The 567AC was a very popular upgrade to the 567A power plant.  New top end to the power assemblies that reduced water coolant leakage.

What would the differences (external) be from a 567 to a 567A to a 567AC?

.

Thanks.

The only real difference seems to be the way the water pump feeds the block. Installed in a loco, you almost wouldn;t even see it. The rest of the changes are internal. It's this change which allows 645 power assemblies to be used in a 567 block, for a bump in horsepower. That too would be invisible from outside the engine block, you'd have to open it up and look at the power assembly to see it was a 645 and not a 567.

No horsepower increase for 645 swaps (block and crank would not like it); it's strictly to ease parts availability.  Yes, you have to do several other things to restore rotating balance, but those too are internal...

Thanks guys. The upgrade to a 567AC didn't mean horsepower increase. Thanks for your help.
