Further to my previous post.

The TCS A1 is a board type decoder. Simply remove the board from the Bachmann and replace it with the TCS A1. You will of course have to unsolder the board from the Bachmann, and resolder the wires to the TCS A1.

Bear in mind that the decoder fitted to the Bachmann engines such as the GP40 is the Lenz LE1000W, the cheapest unit that Lenz make. I have a Bachmann GP50 that came fitted with this decoder and I have to say that the noise level generated by this decoder is very bad. Take note, it is not a silent decoder.

I very quickly replaced it with a TCS A1 silent decoder, and the noise reduction is quite dramatic and most welcome.

Digitrax also has a decoder selection list on their site. http://www.digitrax.com/decsel.php is a direct link to that section.

Bachmann's own decoders might be your best approach for this - they're now offering the GP40 with a decoder factory-fitted, though you can buy the decoders seperately - they're made by Lenz for Bachmann. They come with instructions so installing one should be easy enough. Hope this is of help!

Is there a web site that gives information regarding the proper decoders to use with various locomotives? I seem to remember seeing one but can't recall where. I have a Bachmann EMD 40 which has a electrical board in it and I would like to convert it to DCC but I am an amatur (sp) so it has to be easy.
