Need Layout Help
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 3, 2004 6:14 AM
New to Model Railroading. Starting a 4 x 8 o27 for 7 year old grandson. What type of board, road bed (vinly, cork, other) should I use. Any help for a beginner would be appreciated.

Hi Jimmy,

In HO, I am going with the old standby - cork over 1/2 ply on a 1x4 frame with 16" centres. For O27, you may wi***o go with something more substantial. Whatever you do, try to engineer your solution, rather than overbuild it... especially if it is something you might like to move at some point!

well, for my N scale layout, I'm using 3" thick foam insulation on 1" plywood. But for O27 you might want to use just the plywood, about 2-3" thick.
The advantages of foam insulation, however, are that it's lightweight (and therefore easily movable) and easy to cut into. There's a good article about it in either the May or June 2004 Model Railroader.
If you do decide to use it, though, DON'T, I repeat DON'T use the white styrofoam that's sold for insulation in basement walls, refrigeraters, freezers & coolers. Just try using it once and you'll quickly find out why!!![:D][:D]
