prodigy help needed
Posted by huseby on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 12:20 AM
I am new to dcc and am already having troubles. I am starting my layout with dcc. I have followed the wiring instructions in the manual and all I can do so far is program the locos and run them on the programming track. As soon as the engine wheels hit the insulated gaps it stops.

Looking at the manuals instructions it shows a toggle switch but of course in their worded instructions does not even mention the switch. Is that switch even necessary. I have already burnt out 2 resistors and am getting frustrated with the entire process. I feel that the mrc system is going to be simple to use once it is up and running. Prior to prodigy I purchased the atlas commander system and returned it (what a joke).

Would anybody be willing to look at a pdf file of my layout and offer some advice? I live about 100 miles from any hobby shops and fellow model rrdrs and don't know of anyone using dcc.

Any help is going to be appreciated.
Thanks for listening.

Hi Wayne,

the toggle switch should be a DPDT (preferably Center off). It is basically in there so that when you are through programming the engine, you can throw the switch in the opposite direction so that the power to the track is the same as the rest of the layout.
That being said, it is possible that you have the wires crossed so that it doesn't match the rest of the layout. Test it by physically moving the engine to the normal operating track and see it it runs. If it does, check your wiring to the toggle switch.

Wayne,

I go along with what Bob said. The DPDT toggle (center off is good) just lets you use your programming section for mainline running as well.

A loco stopping at the gap between the programming track and the main is normal. I've used the Atlas Commander for about 2 years and really like it, but the DPDT toggle is necessary for "dual" use of the programming section. The Atlas and most other systems have separate inputs for the programming track, but I'm not familiar with the Prodigy hookup.

All in all Bob's advice should help you find the problem.

Bob & Jim
Thanks for your thoughts. I also talked to tech support at MRC today and basically said the same thing. Also drop the resistor it is only needed for newly installed dc locos. Mine were already to go thanks to ebay.
Thanks again. I guess I need to take a few steps back, take a breath then go forward. I am anxious to get it running.
Thanks again. May talk again. Also I hate to spend my time in the basement these days the weather here in North Dakota is finally in the 70s instead of rain and in the 60s. Summer is here.
