New Layout
Posted by D&HFan on Thursday, June 3, 2004 8:06 AM
Hi Everyone,

I'm new here as far as posting goes and I have question; I am getting ready to build my first layout, I have read a lot of books and looked on the forms for advice. I am thinking of building The Chippewa Central. This is a design by Jim Hediger that appeared in 5 Compact Track Plans published by Model Railroader. Anyway, as for the question, has anyone here built that layout and if so do you have any suggestions or hints that would help with building this?

Thank You,

Bob

Most important thing to do - start. You are going to make mistakes. Nothing you will do is permanent and tearing out sections and scenery and track locations is an ongoing process ( for the rest of your life). Experinece is the best teacher in my opinion.

never built that layout, but my universal advice is TAKE YOUR TIME. You will end up spending less time in the long run because you wont have to replace so many things

I really studied that layout intensily and was going to build it, then I discovered a new way to use the area I had and went with something different. I think the CC is a great layout, especially if you compare it to the normal 4 by 8's out there (I realize the CC is not a 4 by 8). I'm going from memory but I think the only negative about it was that the back three tracks along the back horizontal were on a grade; not a big deal if you are using these tracks for "staging" but it is a big deal if you are planning on using it as a "yard " for some car storage only (they'll roll down hill).

My recommendation is go for it - no matter what layout you do it will have some kind of compromise in it. The Chippewa Central looks like it will be a fun layout to run.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for the feedback and words of encouragement. I hope to start my benchwork in the next few weeks. I will post some pics as I make some progress.
