I also have a Scenic Ridge layout that I started, 3 years ago! Although I finished it in a couple of weeks, I have still not put in my urban area which is the area immediately to the left of the incline before going into the first tunnel opening. (Assuming your trains run from left to right.)
I did extend the track just above the culvert to go to what started out as a place for a round house, but is ending up as a coal industry.
My reason for not being able to fini***he rest of the layout is that same as most: not enough time on my hands. Even though I own 250 freights/tanks/gons/etc and 15 engines.
I have pictures somewhere on my hard drive, if I find them I will send you a link

The first layout I ever built was the Woodland Scenics Grand Valley. After it was nearly complete, I decided
I wanted a bigger layout. So I replaced the bridge with a turnout and a culvert. This way the train could
"leave" the original layout. I added another two feet around the original 4 x 8. This in effect gave me a 8 x 12
area to work with. The problem with this is, and I learn this the hard way, I couldn't reach the center of the layout.
Look at this link. See pic "IM000311" to see the new turnout.

To answer your question, replace a 9" straight section of track with a # 4 turnout. then add to your layout from
that turnout. Plan ahead and you should be fine. Good luck. Dave

Has anyone designed a layout that extends the Scenic Ridge Atlas trackplan? I would like to add an industrial area (3x3 or so) to my layout. I am a beginner that did pretty good with the scenic ridge but have no track-planning skills. I tried RTS to no avail.
Thanks
