how many functions does Soundtraxx need?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, May 8, 2004 1:27 PM
I am thinking about swapping to DCC so I can use sound decoders from sounndtraxx in my HO steam locos.

I will be using either Digitrax Super Empire Builder II (which supports functions 0-8) or Digitrax Super Chief II (which supports functions 0-12).

Given the 1/3 price difference are the extra 4 functions used and if so do they increase the usability of the sound systems?

Which system should I get?

to answer your question you may want to go to soundtraxx's web site
i have a empire builder and love my sysy and soundtraxx decoders
i havent missed any of the 9-12 functions that i am aware of
if the web site doesnt help try calling them and they can give spsific info

good luck

I downloaded the users manual for the current decoderd from the soundtraxx website. They appear to only require the first 9 functions however I may have heard rumblings about hte Tsunami being able to make use of them.

I could be talking rubbi***hough![:-^]

It is more dependent on the Digitrax throttle you use, rather than the system. The DT400 will access F0 thru F12.

FYI, The QSI system, as used by BLI, Lionel, P2K, Atlas, and ??? uses through F12.

Presently, I use a Digitrax , DT 400 and program the decoders using the throttle. However, next time I will purchase a NCE Power House Pro.

You should find that functions 0-8 meet your needs.

I have installed 8 soundtrack systems in my ALCO and EMD deisels and just finished installing my first steam installation in my Bowser decapod. After much agony, I decided on the DSD 100LC best features and price ($77.00) .

I installed the decoder and speaker on a styrene strip and taped them to the inside tender top. I wound up using two 2 plug micro switches (no back up lights). Backup lights will require a 3 prong plug.

I used a 1" speaker and would recommend using a Soundtrax 3/4" speaker in a Soundtrax 2 unit baffle. I found the 1" too loud.

I bought the system from John Eberle's Digistar (See Model Railroader display advertisement). Contact:

Plan your installation and take your time. For Installation help see Model Railroader > Modeling > Controls & Electrical >Wiring With DCC Plugs & Sockets, and IHC's 2-6-0 steam locomotive DCC installation. Both of these articles are invaluable.

The only soldering I did was to the Bowser motor. Otherwise stripped the wires. A hand held small wire stripper/cutter is a big help. I stripped the wires and twisted them together and used shrink tubing.

I did need help getting the complete proper steam sequence programmed. Even with out this extra effort the default sound is ok. Find a knowledgeablle steam person and use the Soundtrax manual for reference to accompli***his part.

I have used the DSD 100LC in both steam and diesel (EMD) and am very happy with this decoder. I will use it again for future steam locomotives.
